So I bought this 1989 TBI 454 from a guy. I'm needing some help on where to go with it. I've never built an engine before, so I'm asking for lots of help. I tore it down, and zip-locked bagged everything. I took the block to the machine shop and had it super-cleaned( baked and shot peened), it looks like the day it was made. Machine shop said I would need to bore it .30 for a good rebuild. My intentions are to keep it as durable and reliable as possible, also I got emissions to deal with. Any suggestions would be appreciated, and where to get an engine rebuid kit.
This is when I got the engine.

And this is after the teardown and cleaning of the block.

Gotta love the look of a thoroughly cleaned block. I've bought a few engine rebuild kits from Summit Racing over the years. they've always done right by me. They also have specialists available when ordering to help with any selections you're unsure of. The shipping was ridiculously quick too.

I've been looking into some piston ring kits at Summit, the machine shop said they needed the pistons before boring the block. Just haven't decided which way to go, stock dish or flat top.
I'm also looking for a set of large oval port heads, I've been doing a lot of research on the peanut port heads I have, and they're not too desirable for hp.

There was a thread on here discussing the pros and cons of the different ports on those heads. If I remember correctly, the peanut ports were good for low end torque, and the larger ports were for horsepower? The people at Summit may be able to help in the piston selection, especially if you're concerned about keeping it within emissions spec.

I'd love to do something like this someday. And do a trans rebuild.
