383 Help?

Need some help from the engine gurus. I bought a 87 V1500. It has a 383 in it. The spec's I was given are as follows:
9:1 Compression
Summit Vortec Heads
Eddie RPM Air Gap Intake
Eagle Stroker Kit
Comp Hydraulic Flat tappet cam 218/226 @ .050"
Headman Long tube headers


It currently has an Eddie 1406 600 cfm carb. I am trying to figure out how to wake it up, and pull some more power out of it. I am looking at a Holly 750 w/vac secondaries. With the internals and intake, what kind of power can I expect out of it?

anyone else? He claimed 425hp/475tq .... but doesn't feel like 400hp

Those numbers seem a little high for a 9:1engine. What lift is the cam? Try setting the timing. Do you know what the rear gear ratio is?

Rear end is 3.73. No clue on lift on the cam.

Well for sure a 600cfm is not gonna do it any 750 should suffice. you could try a single plane manifold, although they are not designed for low end tourqe but rather WOT. I have seen some pretty potent 350s with single plane manifolds and large cams in my day. One particular all out 350 had a holley intake and 750 carb in a 77 Camaro and I almost left a stain in my pants. LOL

Most single planes dont kick in till around 3k....... And I would say 650cfm is plenty for street use. 750 if your racing.......

You could get the 750 if the price is right, and jet it down to a 650, that way if you go bigger you can always jet it back to a 750. But 750 is to much for a street use 383, And 9:1 isnt all that high for a performance engine, but is perfect for a street truck.

Go holley, and if you dont wanna mess with tuning, go Q-jet, Find a place that can set one up for you and just run it.....

Ya exactly WOT on the single planes.

Just get a good Quadrajet and it will automatically give what ever you need up to 750, plus there way better for off camber driving. Although I guess holley now has a off road/off camber carb too.

It really depends on how much attention was paid to the details to make that 9-1 engine run it's best, could be only 8.6-1 with no quench also. The 600 is a good mileage carb for a 383 IMHO, and you probably need a square bore carb for your manifold - so a good Q-jet is not an option.

Pull the heads and have them ported if you really want power, check the compression and quench distance while they're off. Also a higher stall torque converter will help alot if yours is stock.

The cam should be fine for exactly what you have.

Make sure it is tuned to its best, you need a quick advance in the distributor and if you're not sure then start there first !
