Welding Cast Iron Block... Is it just me? I reckon someone's prep'd this and tried to weld it previously - unsuccessfully, obviously....

Starter bolt mount - not straight and not staggered? Huh?!!

Another fix.... Another possibility may be fix a shorter 'stud' to the transmission-block attachment point and drill up vertically behind the stud for the starter motor? Wouldn't be more than 3-4 turns in though? I realy think I'm going to have to have a crack at Cast Iron welding to get this...

Starter bolt mount - not straight and not staggered? Huh?!!

Georgeb That might work, but might introduce more weak areas in the block for it to crack again, in a different place maybe?

Engine Stand Bolts Fair enough. If it breaks - I'm an idiot :handshake: Found a bigger problem though - plans to drill inboard of the old starter hole? THAT hole would come straight up and intersect the lowest right block-to-transmission thread - straight through the middle of it -...

Starter bolt mount - not straight and not staggered? Huh?!!

Engine Stand Bolts... OK, making some discoveries along the way and figure others may benefit. Have to put the block on the stand. Ordered some Grade 8, 3/8" - 16 x 2.5" long bolts to mount to the engine stand as recommended by the manufacturer of the stand (recommendation was for size - not...

Starter bolt mount - not straight and not staggered? Huh?!!

Sure... If it all turns into a stripped, threaded mess of molten steel, I will buy a new GM Crate engine from JEGS and ship it here. Build it into what I want, knowing the engine is new! DHL does LCL (Less than Container Load - just pay for the space on the container you use - figuring around...

Starter bolt mount - not straight and not staggered? Huh?!!

Welding a stud? Yeah that's a good point - on both counts. Maybe even, instead of a stud, a longer bolt - thinking it may be an option to grind a flat pad for the head of the bolt, then nest it into the thread that's left and weld it in place. That would give it support from the top that...

Damage to Bell Housing Not uncommon apparently? You can see that the dust makes life tricky. I will overhaul the TH350 and the NP203 whilst they're out - hopefully.... hmmm.... Youtube... and eBay....

Using the replacement Dual-Drilled Starter motor First Pic - Starter as it would bolt normally for a 168 tooth flexplate Second - ..... for a 153 tooth flexplate Third - shifting the outer bolt for a new drill and tap for a 153 tooth flexplate install. White box simulates the edge of the...

Starter bolt mount - not straight and not staggered? Huh?!!

Yep it's hot! yeah - hot here - and sandy - like fingerprinting dust! Literally, if you touch your car after you've washed it you come back and find your prints lit up by superfine sand! You could lift them easily :-) The bracket that uses the '55 starter? I've considered that, but still not...

Starter bolt mount - not straight and not staggered? Huh?!!

Options... Thanks Georgeb That would seem another option. I have a Henrob Torch (aka Dillon aka DHC 2000) Great torch. Can weld Cast Iron, so I could simply build the ear up and drill/tap that? I would be wary of trying to weld dissimilar metals in this case AND align the stud accurately...

Starter bolt mount - not straight and not staggered? Huh?!!

Cheers That makes sense. I will try a repair. First repair will be a drill and tap to fit a mini hi-torque. If that does not work I'll go for the starter tranny mount kit and grab a starter from somewhere for that. It's a shame that this is a known issue but there's no aftermarket workaround...

    1973-87 Hood

Hood (aka Bonnet :-) [You won't have to modify the hood, the cabs are the same shape. When you swap the '73-'80 front clip onto the truck with hinges and all, a '73-'80 hood will fit too. The wiper mounts will be too tall though, so those need changed to the '73-'80 style also] Ripper...

Starter bolt mount - not straight and not staggered? Huh?!!

Thanks... Thanks guys. Robert8096 - cheers for that. Makes sense from the pic. Bit of a bugger tho. Hard to find old blocks in the Middle East to replace it with. The suggestion from 77 K20 is appreciated too. I know you can get mini hi-torques for the '55s - maybe bolt one up to that...

    1973-87 Hood

Switching Hoods Hey, just stumbled into this because I have a '73 K10, but a very straight '82 body on it. I want to return the front end to a '73 clip. From what I have learnt, this transfer is not too hard. The '80 plus have a air intakes on the Cab and the hood is therefore shorter. The '73...

Starter bolt mount - not straight and not staggered? Huh?!!

Hi and thanks for reading... I have a 1973 K10 with a 350, TH350. She's a project - body off resto. I wanted to fire the engine just to make sure it DOES fire. Sorted some basic wiring. Solenoid noise only. Bit more investigation. Starter motor is 'Staggered' bolt pattern with a 14", 168...

FNG, Kiwi living in the Middle East...

Hi Guys New Zealander living in the UAE. Bought a 1973 K10 with an '82-ish body on her - rust free and very straight. Will change the front clip back to a '73. Runs a 350. Working on getting that started. Last turned over three years ago (apparently) with some go-juice down the carb only...
