    K20 Wheel/Tire Confirmation

@Shorty81, Thanks! I love the look too. I agree, looks as it should! @AuroraGirl, yes, the wheels are powder coated. They come only in black. I agree some OEM caps would look great. We are still sorting through my Dad's estate. I am hoping I stumble across the original caps when we sort through...

    New tires and painted rims!

Looks good Kalvin! My 73 K20 had the 16.5" wheels. My plan was do what you did until I realized how hard it is to find tires for that wheel size. I ended up getting some 16x8 Wheel Vintiques and powder coating them white. I love that old school look!

Light white smoke and backfire at high RPM or under load

Thanks Rick. At this point, I have the engine all buttoned back up and running. I had pulled the oil pan when I removed the timing chain cover. I did not remove any of the rod caps. Perhaps I should have. I guess that will have to wait until a future oil change. The oil pump I put in was a...

Light white smoke and backfire at high RPM or under load

Circling back to close the loop on this thread. Even though I haven't updated for over a month, I have been working on the engine. The heads had one intake and one exhaust valve that were leaking. The machine shop replaced all guides, 9 seats, and ground and seated all valves. I got the heads...

Light white smoke and backfire at high RPM or under load

@DoubleDingo, Yep, she's my truck! Warts and all! @RanchWelder, I'm not sure on a budget and simple are words my wife would agree with! And I haven't even started replacing or fixing rusted panels or worn interior! This restoration will go well beyond getting it running. But it isn't going to be...

Light white smoke and backfire at high RPM or under load

Gents, I appreciate the concern about my old 350 being behind from a technology perspective. But, I'll probably only put a couple thousand miles a year on it once I get it restored. Perhaps if it were going to be my daily driver and see a lot of miles, I'd go with the roller cams. Others have...

Well…that doesn’t help much at this point.

Light white smoke and backfire at high RPM or under load

Thanks for all the input gents. This thread is a good reference for me and likely others going through a similar project. Appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I talked to my machinist this morning and he recommended a cam. This afternoon, I ordered the cam and lifters (COMP cam kit), timing...

Light white smoke and backfire at high RPM or under load

OMG @Welder, you just opened up the firehose! Thanks for taking all the time to jot this down and share the video links. I was 'hoping' not to crack open the bottom end other than to loosen the oil pan so I could take off the timing chain cover. I need to read through this a few times to...

Light white smoke and backfire at high RPM or under load

@Welder, you were up late or very early :). Not necessarily trying to get the ol truck running on the cheap. This is simply my first rodeo. I've done a fair amount of wrenching on motorcyles, but never the big boys. I figured this non-emission and non-computer controlled truck had the perfect...

May call the machinist next week. He is an engine builder and can likely give me a recommendation.

Light white smoke and backfire at high RPM or under load

@squaredeal91, I never replaced a cam, but based on a bit of research, it doesn't look too bad, and looks like I can do it with the rest of the block still in the truck. I can also take care of the timing chain then. I jumped onto Summit Racing to look for camshafts and over 600 results popped...

Light white smoke and backfire at high RPM or under load

Well...I feel a bit like I'm playing Whack-a-Mole. I pulled the lifters individually to inspect them. All looked good with the exception of the No 3 exhaust. Looks like this lifter has not been rotating for some time. Arghh! I'm guessing this means a new cam. I can't seem to get ahead in this...

Light white smoke and backfire at high RPM or under load

@RanchWelder, thanks for the tips. I'll take in the manifolds when I pick up the heads and have the machinist check them for flatness. The engine hasn't overheated since I got the truck a couple of months ago, but I don't know prior to that. My Dad generally kept the truck well maintained and...

Light white smoke and backfire at high RPM or under load

Thanks @Snoots and @PrairieDrifter. Set of new bolts for the heads is $28 and on sale at 20% off, so may just replace those given the nominal cost. I felt lucky to remove the exhaust manifold bolts without snapping one. I definitely want to replace those, but I can't find any online at Napa. Are...

Light white smoke and backfire at high RPM or under load

Providing an update as a couple of weeks have passed since my last post. I put some oil in the cylinders to check whether the leak was rings or valves. The compression numbers did not change. I ran a can of CRC valve cleaner through the intake. No change. I pulled the valve covers and removed...

Light white smoke and backfire at high RPM or under load

Thanks @WFO, I’ll do that. I had just assumed as the other cylinders were good, it was valves. Another reminder of how little I know. Your comment does have me wondering though if the compression loss is due to rings, could the rings in those two cylinders be stuck? I would have thought that...

Light white smoke and backfire at high RPM or under load

I am losing my head(s)!! I finally got to checking the compression this morning. I took the truck out for a short run to warm it up then pulled the plugs. This is the first time I had pulled the plugs since putting a bit of time on the engine. I pulled 1, 3, and 5 and each of the plugs had a...
