    L31 (Vortec 5700) swap

I tied in, IIRC, at the distributor, alternator, and then at the big bulkhead connector for +12, +12sw, gauges, etc. I'll see if I can dig up the cutover diagrams I did for the project - truck has since been stolen. :(

How did this thread get resurrected? I went ahead with the Vortec 5700 swap. Read all about it at: http://www.gmsquarebody.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5795

you beat me to it, Kleedus.

    L31 (Vortec 5700) swap

Scotty, you're close but it's more like drinking your own urine (which, BTW, although gross, is sterile and won't do any harm - some folks do it while training for a fight and if stranded at sea it's much much better than attempting to drink seawater). If the engine is running properly, the...

    L31 (Vortec 5700) swap

Mileage might not be as bad as you think if you keep EGR and run in 2wd for the most part. For the most part I like it in the truck. I truly love that it cranks right up in freezing weather and after letting the trans build a little pressure and heat you're off to the races. I wish it...

    L31 (Vortec 5700) swap

Well, my mileage wasn't as bad as i thought. I have no speedo/odo right now so i filled up and then tracked my trips with google maps, filled up again (at ~1/3 tank) and did the math. Looks like 11.3mpg mixed city/highway. Not so bad for an NP203 running fulltime and a THM350, on 32" A/Ts...

    L31 (Vortec 5700) swap

Ok, with the help of all y'all i got her on the road and today solved my giant transmission leak (kick down cable was completely out of transmission). I still have a funny drivability problem - when i mat the gas and really load it up it tachs up and pulls but then shuts off at some point (no...

    L31 (Vortec 5700) swap

Well, had a great weekend working on the truck and then...driving it. I got the pushrod drilled out to install on the brake pedal and got that buttoned up. Then got the driver's side exhaust completely hung. I'm loving my $240 Jegs pipe and muffler kit - especially after Midas tried to rape...

    L31 (Vortec 5700) swap

IT DRIVETH! But, it shouldn't have. Searching for the giant vacuum leaks I capped off the two evap lines and still had a giant wooshing sound. Kept looking and finally found that the brake booster was leaking like a sieve. Not sure if it was a failed diaphragm or just a rust hole in the...

    L31 (Vortec 5700) swap

I wish you success in your transplant. If i can offer only ONE piece of advice at this point it would be - label label label and document document document. Take way more pictures from way more angles than you ever think will be necessary and add labels to every wire you cut (both ends) or...

    L31 (Vortec 5700) swap

Figured out the 2,000 rpm idle - wasn't the vacuum leaks (which are still a-plenty). I had hooked up the cruise box and it had enough cable tension to crack open the throttle. I pulled it's cable and now have a very pleasant idle. The Dynomax mufflers may actually be enough now that i've...

    L31 (Vortec 5700) swap

I found the temp line and think I've found the oil pressure line. I don't have the sensor plugged in right now (but never lose fuel pressure) because it restricted access to that giant bundle i needed to do some splicing in. Figured out the sender unit - it must have hung on something...

    L31 (Vortec 5700) swap

I'll check the ground, but it shares a ground with the fuel pump, and that's working. There's at least one splice in the signal wire - i'll check that too. Any idea which wire in the Vortec harness gives me block temp and oil pressure for the dash? A whole plug tower off - THAT's impressively...

    L31 (Vortec 5700) swap

Fuel - check Oil - check Water - check Crankety crankety VROOOOOM! Making an awful squeal so it only got to run for 30 seconds or so (it was 12:30AM). Now to get all the intake stuff on (MAF, IAT, etc) and make sure the oil pressure sender is plugged in (how long should i be able to run on...

    L31 (Vortec 5700) swap

Gas tank is now plumbed in and wired but not lifted (just in case something's screwy). Tried to use steel line but couldnt get it to bed (yes, using a bender) without folding so i broke down and spent the money on good soft line. So far the fuel system is the most expensive thing besides the...

    L31 (Vortec 5700) swap

Thanks Kledus, I have an old-style oil filter adapter coming tomorrow from Jegs. $27 shipped - didn't seem too bad when it would cost $10-$15 at pull-a-part and i'd get greasy. Main things I'm missing in the wiring are: what to splice into my '79 harness for oil pressure gauge and temp gauge...

    L31 (Vortec 5700) swap

I have the complete L31 harness so I'm just tying in where i need to to the '79 harness and jumping out things that aren't present on the '79 like park safety switch, etc. I got a universal VSS unit from Dakota and everything else is factory sensors. I'm keeping it OBD2 for diagnostics so as...

    L31 (Vortec 5700) swap

Turned over for the first time tonight. Found purples in the transmission harness (cut) that went to and from the safety switch and jumped them together. Used the old coil wire to the main C100 pink (may need to tie in the other C100 pinks to this) for keyed 12V and ran a dedicated new constant...

    Hood Still Won't Close

I'm guessing no one makes an elegant hinge replacement with gas shocks? I'll try the uber-lube (i did all the rotating parts, honestly didn't think to lube the springs themselves) and bracket loosening. I knew it was a band-aid fix and when/if I get a new hood I'll cut the straps on a water...

    Hood Still Won't Close

Hood sticks up in the back In a likely futile attempt to resurrect this thread I'll post a technical question since it seems all my best contributors are already in here and might have subscribed. My '79 has the more rare "hood won't close" but not in a lame "I left a toolbox on the radiator...

    L31 (Vortec 5700) swap

Thank You Foamy! My pump had the pressure? sending unit on it also, so i just took the whole accessory bracket out of the truck and did the swap on a bench. In case anyone has found this thread looking for similar help the pressure unit has a pair of circlips holding the plastic stuff together...

87 R10 Cuts off at stop lights

You might also try pulling the plug from the O2 sensor(s) and forcing open loop to isolate any potential feedback loop. That is, after you've checked the MAP sensor and fuel pressures (don't recall if you already did the fuel pressure bit)

Happy to do so, but I need a hose that goes from what to what? Admittedly, I'm not someone who can look at hydraulic fittings and call out the size and thread pitch.

I might have found the unobtainable steering line: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_7-16-male-inverted-flare-x-16mm-male-o-ring-powercraft_18070589-p?searchTerm=inverted+flare+o-ring Anybody know if this is what would connect the pressure fitting of the...

    L31 (Vortec 5700) swap

Loosened the trans mounts and hooked the engine to the hoist again. Was able to pull enough to get one bolt in the drivers side and all three in the passenger's. That will do for now until i get the rest of it buttoned up to at least me mobile under it's own power. I'm losing grace with my...
