    Clicking coming from engine bay

it is definitely engine related. I've been looking around some say it's the fuel pump others say sticky rockers. this motor needs a rebuild anyway so im probably just going to do both. at first i heard it and thoght it was a valve hitting the piston

    Clicking coming from engine bay

When i occasionally take this up to highway speed when i would slow down i could hear a clicking coming from the engine bay. recently it has been happening once its warm. i checked all fluids, everything seems fine. its not to nasty of a click so i don't think its rod knock but i know i should...

Starter with a mind of its own

@illmanners this helps a lot I think the first couple starters were just chewed up due to improper mounting but the last has just been poor quality parts from AutoZone.

Starter with a mind of its own

@trukman1 every time I have the starter off I have been taking that torque converter cover off and checking it and its definitely warn but in a useable enough condition.

Starter with a mind of its own

@hoagster the Bendix is definitely what's broken on this starter but it hasn't been the same problem every time so I think its crap parts.

    Anyone prefer the mini starters?

@Camar068 that was the one I got. I started this thread because in the last 3 months I have replaced almost 4 starters for different reasons, mainly faulty components so I'm just hoping this newer starter doesn't have any of those problems.

Starter with a mind of its own

@WFO I bought this starter new from Autozone like a month ago so the quality control on these must be horrible. I'm going to get another one from Autozone but install one of those mini starters instead.

Starter with a mind of its own

ok i took that lower plate off and found that mouting the starter is not the problem. it appears to line up perfectly but the spur gear isnt turning. watch this video i took and let me know what you think.

    Anyone prefer the mini starters?

I'm mainly envious of the mounting plate this one has. everyone else I've been talking to is aware of my starter alignment issues.

    Anyone prefer the mini starters?

i see these all over the place and might have to put a new starter in soonish. what is different about these other than the fact they don't weigh 200 pounds.

Starter with a mind of its own

your probably right @ali_c20, I'm going to get some ordered. my only concern is that the one closest to the block still won't tighten up because of how gummed up the threads are but that's something I should probably try to fix anyways.

Starter with a mind of its own

I don't about you, but I don't particularly care for being under a vehicle when someone else sitting in the driver's seat. that's not a bad idea and I will certainly try that, however, every once in a while I get under it and tug on the starter to see if it moves in any direction and normally...

Starter with a mind of its own

one bolt looks original and the other doesn't thread in all the way due to building up of crap from there only being one bolt but I have washers on there to make up for that gap an actually put some clamping pressure on the starter
  18. TONKA

Starter with a mind of its own

both the bolts are in and tight. funny thing is it was fine until just a couple weeks ago so I'm not sure if it just twists that hard or what but i bought a brace for it so ill get back when that's installed. really appreciate your input.

Starter with a mind of its own

So for a while, I had issues with my starter not being lined up, mainly because I was trying everything but shims. but now that it is shimmed on a cold start the motor will wind up then abruptly stop. second try it grinds a little. third, it cranks like new. the only thing I don't have done...

    Possessed electrics

i put two shims on the outer bolt and when my shift is over I will see if I have anymore grinding. as far as the bolt problem I think I will just rely on the washers for now. its my only vehicle at the moment so i can't really afford to take the motor out but if i have a chance maybe ill try to0...

Also just realized my truck doesn't have a nose brace so glad @Snoots pointed that out.

    Possessed electrics

The one thing i havnt done yet is shims so im going to try that today (30 thou on the outer bolt) looks like its just to tight. and don't tell my dad but ive got like 4 washers closing the gap between the heat of the bolt and the starter.

    Possessed electrics

I've got the same grinding problem but it only happens when the engine is warm. seems like it isn't getting pushed out far enough or the starts torque is pulling it out of alignment. i have a bit of a weird set up because of one bolt won't thread in all the way. so that might be the root of my...
