Probably already know it’s bad, but how bad?

Mine has patina on the top and hood too, but it's just sun baked paint.

Probably already know it’s bad, but how bad?

I reinstalled the old oil pressure sender and fired it up tonight. The oil pressure gauge stayed pegged beyond 60 psi and never moved. No oil smoke on startup but if I rev it hard, I'll get a bit of a cloud. I decided to let it idle till the thermostat opened and see what happened. the...

Probably already know it’s bad, but how bad?

Okay, today I fired it up and there was no visible smoke on startup (in the barn so I would have seen it) and little to none when revving it (outside the barn, so less easy to see but always seen in the past). I still have a bit of a misfire but I still have 4 plugs gapped correctly and 4 010"...

Little help needed with positioning OEM roof rack etc on my 88 Suburban

I have the tailgate too. Thanks for the info. Do you have threaded inserts in the roof or did the screws go right into the sheet metal?

Little help needed with positioning OEM roof rack etc on my 88 Suburban

Good to know, thanks. The one I removed just had sheet metal screws right into the roof skin. No nutserts/keenserts installed, I would have remembered that.

Little help needed with positioning OEM roof rack etc on my 88 Suburban

That's what it's looking like. There are some profiles on the feet that should match something on the roof so I'll go by that and what everyone has posted. I got all the gaskets and screws so I should be good to go. Thanks for all of the input. Next project is the rear bumper. Between...

Little help needed with positioning OEM roof rack etc on my 88 Suburban

Alrighty, it appears my rack once assembled is 77" long. I have an adjustable air deflector. I took all of this stuff off of the other Suburban myself, it was an 86 as I recall. There no way the center support on the deflector will touch my roof without adjustment down, haha. Also appears...

Probably already know it’s bad, but how bad?

ok, thanks. Just trying to sort out the issues with gauge reaction to the two senders I've installed. Since the signal bypasses the ECM, it's not at fault, which is a good thing. They probably aren't easy to find.

Probably already know it’s bad, but how bad?

Thanks for the schematic. I know I had a Chiltons manual for this era truck but I can't find it post move. Along with assembling the roof rack and seeing if the oil pressure gauge returns to zero with the new sender before pegging when started, I may swap the old oil pressure sender in and see...

Little help needed with positioning OEM roof rack etc on my 88 Suburban

Thanks for the info. I dug mine out yesterday and I'll need to put it back together and measure overall length. I disassembled it completely so it would fit in my car for the 2 hour drive home. I don't have the strips that attach to the top, just the rack and air deflector.

    Nothing about that sounds good.

Probably already know it’s bad, but how bad?

Thanks for the photos. I have a photo of the original sender on mine down by the oil filter and it's included. The replacement sender I got today was exactly the same as the original and I installed it a little while ago. The oil pressure is now pegged on the gauge down past the 60 psi...

Little help needed with positioning OEM roof rack etc on my 88 Suburban

Thanks guys. Been working on the oil pressure switch question in my other thread and haven't gotten to this just yet. Looks like I need to get the rack etc out of the back and see what I've got. I packed all the extra parts in there 6 months ago for the move and haven't looked at them since...

Thanks for the replies, glad some folks are following along. Yes, the sending unit looks like yours, DirtyDYT, but it's in a different position, above/behind the oil filter. I initially bought one with 1/8" thread and after I managed to get the original off, I discovered it was a 1/4" thread...

Little help needed with positioning OEM roof rack etc on my 88 Suburban

Among the stuff I got from a guy who was parting out a Suburban was what I assume was the factory roof rack and rear "spoiler" looking unit. It took me a while to find a good photo, this looks like what I have: http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_images/1/2008/4141/5019570099_large.jpg I...

Probably already know it’s bad, but how bad?

Update: Truck continues to have a very light haze of oil smoke at start but is getting better every time I start it. I imagine there is quite a bit of oil inside the exhaust manifold and downpipe that needs to burn off. I pulled the plug where the oil return was blocked and it was oil fouled...

On the plus side, the engine bay cleaned up nicely so if it doesn't run better, it will look dang fine running like it does.

Probably already know it’s bad, but how bad?

Update time - used a few rolls of paper towels/shop towels/panel trim tools and a disposable drain snake attachment to clean the sludge out of the heads and the oil return holes on both sides. Used a turkey baster to squirt 4 or 5 loads of oil down that rear return hole by the brake booster...

Probably already know it’s bad, but how bad?

Okay, got the valve cover off after removing the AC compressor and pivoting the AC bracket out of the way. Lots of oil pooled in the back of the head, started sopping that up. Still not sure how and why the valve cover came off which should be interesting getting it back on but cleaning will...

Understandable, oil dripping from that area isn't something normal, haha.

Between the exhaust manifold and the downpipe.

Probably already know it’s bad, but how bad?

Thanks for the info. It came out a little bit ago with some really hard twisting and pulling. Soaking overnight must have helped, or I just gave up caring if it broke or not. I then took the valve cover loose from the head and a decent amount of oil came out the bottom side of the head...

Probably already know it’s bad, but how bad?

I found the PCV on the passenger side, and that came right out, since I had already replaced that and the short plastic pipe to the throttle body base. This seems to be just a molded black plastic pipe stuck in a grommet on the drivers side. It goes to a metal pipe connected to the throttle...

Probably already know it’s bad, but how bad?

Thanks. I was 99% sure that was the case but it's to the point of breaking and not coming out so I thought I'd ask to make it 100% sure. I assume the grommets in the valve cover were soft at one point in time but they are so hard now they seem to be part of the covers. That's probably a large...
