    1985 K5 keeps breaking starters, help!

    I have one 350 that takes a washer, between the starter and the block, on the outside bolt and nothing on the inside bolt. No combo of shims would work right. I had to take it on and off many times to figure it out. It works great now. Don't give up, try different stuff.

    I had this happen one time with one of those "fail safe" thermostats in my Jeep, on a deer hunting trip. The thermostat got locked in the open position, and it never got hot enough to heat the heater core up. No more of those "fail safe" in any of my vehicles.

    I can't answer that for sure. I think it is probably just that they are worn out. Buy the ones that fit your truck and try them out. There is always surprises when you are doing a conversion.

    Just buy the small block 350 mounts. They are the same other than the bolt pattern on the frame. I have been through all of this before. The factory big block trucks had the larger bolt pattern. The part that the motor mount bolts onto is the same on both.

    New fan shroud, brackets... other than that, its a big jump in CID, so all the stuff that GM did differently (radiator, exhaust, carb, transmission, suspension, etc..) on a 454 to make them perform better. The small block stuff will work, but big block stuff is bigger for a reason. Go for it...

    Sell the 440 and put a chevy motor in that chevy. It will be "cheaper". As Backyard said, it is all of the other stuff that will not work out, even if you get it bolted in there some how. Bad idea.

    There is no reason that I know of not to run it. I prefer to run 20w50 in my old engines. What is your concern about running 10w40?

    Run it year round. I am not sure that will help with your blue smoke problem though. That would probably be oil getting past the seals on the valve guides. How many miles on the engine?

    It looks like it would be quite a handful getting all of that stuff down the road, especially in the mountains. Your insurance company might be able to tell you how much they will cover, as far as weight. That is what is important. State laws are going to vary.

    Ricko nailed it. Its like a 383 or 400 SBC with all the better features. Bigger valves, rods, etc... heavy duty and still stock dependable. Sure it is a little bit heavier, but these trucks are already heavy.
