SOLVED! 1987 350 TBI Timing advance issues

I think your ESC is working correctly based on your description of testing the knock sensor. I'd sort out the code 42 and see if that goes away..

SOLVED! 1987 350 TBI Timing advance issues

on the ICM harness - black and red wire should ground through the ECM all the time. verify it is grounded good ground. black and tan should have 5v when RPM>400. under 400RPM, or with the wire disconnected by brake booster, the timing is running only on the ICM timing. this will cause poor...

SOLVED! 1987 350 TBI Timing advance issues

if you disconnect the tan/black EST wire and nothing noticeable changes with the engine running, then that is an issue. does the check engine light work? do you have a code 42 stored? I'd start reading up Section 6 of the drivability and emissions manual that covers the EST system.

Finally have this girl home, now what?

bad hwy manners can result from larger tires without adjusting the DRAC settings. is the speedo off? start with the basics - check timing, vacuum (with a gauge) and fuel pressure. check condition of vacuum lines to TBI and routing to make sure they are correct. check plugs, wires, cap, and...

SOLVED! 1987 350 TBI Timing advance issues

all good advice right there. you may also plug the vacuum lines for the EGR and see if that makes a difference. sometimes the wrong type of EGR gets installed mistakenly. also check the fuel pressure.

I'd highly suspect the ignition control module under the distributor cap. and replace it with an AC Delco for the greatest chance at success with the new part.

that's it. you can get it out if you remove the horizontal duct pretty easily. if you know where it is you can leave the duct in place and use a little persuasion to slide it between the bottom of the dash and the duct.

    The old 700R4 questions!

for stock motor and tire size, I'd agree that OD is fine all the time except towing. let the transmission do its thing as designed. if you're running an increased tire size without regearing to a ratio that would restore the original gearing to tire size ratios, then running in D around town...

What have you done to your square lately??

looks great! make sure to adjust the DRAC to correct your speedo. the computer uses that speed info for tcc lock and maybe some other stuff. it will make a difference in how it runs down the highway for sure...

    More horsepower

I haven't messed with the TBI spacers yet. TBI isn't built for huge power. a mild cam, a little Tuning (or bump your timing a little), free flowing exhaust, a little fuel pressure bump, etc is about all you can do without swapping heads. turning your 210hp into 235-250hp may not be a big lift if...

What's the good AC compressor these days?

ac work isn't as complicated as you'd think. you can borrow flush kits, manifold gauges, and vaccuum pumps from the auto parts store. watch some YouTube videos and jump in.

AC Compressor Change - Accumulator/Orifice Tube Criticality

If the compressor hadn't fried yet, and was just leaking, it may be fine. Does the line get frozen where the orifice tube is? That would indicate a clog if so.

Automatic transmission newbie asking basic questions

depends on your tire size and gearing, how bad it will hunt. I will say that I keep mine in D unless I am consistently at 60mph or above to limit hunting and torque converter locking and unlocking issues. Mine is a 1990 v1500 burb with 700r4 and 3.73 rolling on BFG 33in (really ~32in). but I...

    Sniper Coolant Temperature Probe Location?

the dash gauge reads temp in-between cylinders 1 and 3 on that single wire sensor in pic 3. not sure what you disconnected up by the thermostat housing....maybe somebody had a second. aftermarket gauge for some reason?

also flush the lines and replace the orifice tube if the compressor died.

    Blows Hot Air When Off?

on just the vent setting, the air comes in hotter than ambient on my 1990 suburban, even on the highway cruising. usually it is about 8-10 degrees warmer. I attribute it to old tech inefficiencies and old door seals on the climate control system. but I don't have a lot if air flow coming in if...

    Windshield wiper and washer problem

I'd find the wiring diagram and see where there is common power or potential for a component to fail that would power them both at the same time. maybe it goes through a control module that is bad, or maybe it is all on the wiper motor for those years and the motor is bad? I'm only familiar with...

    350 TBI high idle

yes, it will eventually learn the iac position. the quick way to do it is to force it closed by jumping A and B on the ALDL with key on. then it knows what fully closed is and where 0 is. if you messed with the idle stop screw, just make sure your IAC counts are in the 5-30ish range warm and at...

    350 TBI high idle

idle will always jump when you return to park bc the load comes off the engine. it could jump to maybe as high as 950-1000rpm. but should settle down fairly quickly and likely be in the 750rpm range fully warmed on a stock computer chip. in gear idle will be in the 525rpm range, also stock chip...

    350 TBI high idle

so much hate, Jack34, so much hate. I realize you had a bad experience with TBI that you couldn't get resolved and sold it. Like mom always said, if you aren't helping things you are hurting things. just let it go, stop trolling the TBI posts, and go enjoy your carb

    350 TBI high idle

check to make sure the vac lines are on the throttle body correct per the sticker on the core support. the charcoal cannister should not have vac at idle, only off idle. the egr solenoid and MAP have vac always. looking at your coolant temp and open loop status, it isn't warmed up. does it idle...

    88 Suburban - R12 to R134 questions

4.36 is the "chart" converted r134a great for a rear ac burb. I just did mine a couple weeks ago and it is cooling great. previously sanden converted. agreed that the back lines can leak. the rear expansion valve can be tricky. i had to lose the brass spacer and use 2 orings to get my new one...

    350 TBI high idle

might try resetting the IAC by forcing it closed. if the idle is high and iac is opening to make it high, something may still be off in the wiring. is all the other sensor data tracking normal?
