    New build wont stay running

A common error is to stab the distributor 180* out. Did you check to see which TDC you had when you put it in?

    Good ignition system?

    Edelbrock 1406 failed emissions

You can probably run the lockup off the ported vacuum. You might give that a try.

    Edelbrock 1406 failed emissions

Hanging the vacuum can off the same line puts a capacitance on that line and smooths the transitions. Which apparently is affecting the lockup. You need a higher capacity port for the lockup, or a different port for the vac advance. What other vacuum connections do you have? For example on...

    Newbie needs your help

Yeah, so with 4.11 and 34/35" tires, he's right at the yellow-green boundary, which is good. I think the speedo is way off. Or the tach. Or both.

    Newbie needs your help

4.10 gears in final drive with 35" tires should only be 2360 rpm at 60. Something's goofy. 4.10 gears with 35" tires is same as 3.4 gears with 29" tires, so that's not out of line. Either the speedo is off, the tach is off, the tire size is off (except you can just read that off the tire), or...

    Affordable engine replacement?

Nope. Seam Murphy at Sean Murphy Induction (SMI) turned me on to that cam. He had it written down as the cam to go to in that engine for a truck. And he would know. He said it's the closest you can get to a ZZ4 without doing a ZZ4.

    Edelbrock 1406 failed emissions

Yes, you can tee the lines. Read this post on another forum: http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=32085.0 Read this post, too, but especially note the highlighted areas in the diagram: http://chevellestuff.net/tech/articles/vacuum/port_or_manifold.htm Ported...

Outstanding! Now, move your vacuum advance line over to the other side of the carb where it belongs.

Edelbrock 750 miss of the line....

!?!?!?!?!? Well, if you haven't done the very basics -- like set the timing -- you don't know that you have anything wrong at all. It may be running exactly as you have it set to run. Even a decent simple timing light is only 30 bucks...

Edelbrock 750 miss of the line....

Two things right off for off-idle problems: Have you adjusted your accelerator pump shot? Do you have the vacuum advance plugged into manifold vacuum?

    Edelbrock 1406 failed emissions

Excellent. So leaning it out just a bit (98 to 95 primaries; 95 to 92 secondaries), cleaning it out, and a new accelerator pump and floats did the trick. Oh, and toss in the phenolic spacer to keep the carb from overheating and simplify starting when hot. You might get even better mileage...

    Affordable engine replacement?

I'd go with the 3.42 ratio. The 3.78, even with my 31" tires, is pretty high in revs at 80. With 29" tires, a 3.42 would work great. G80 posi in the rear while you're at it. The stock 350 is a good engine, and there are advantages to starting with everything all new. Put a cam in when the...

    Edelbrock 1406 failed emissions

Yeah, and with 092 jets, those will be too lean in cruise and too rich in power.

    Edelbrock 1406 failed emissions

Wait a minute. That's backwards. At higher altitude, you have fewer air molecules per volume, so you need LESS gas, not more. Yeah, start with the 092 jets and 65/57 rods. We might be able to go a touch bigger on the rods to lean it out, like the 70/57. If you have to lean it out more...

    Edelbrock 1406 failed emissions

Yeah, use the .092s. You might want to start with the 62/52 rods, though.

    Edelbrock 1406 failed emissions

Let me know how it works out. There are some options I'm aware of (like I switch to 062/052 rods in the winter for a richer mixture -- probably not an issue in Tucson), and I'll try to help if that doesn't get you where you need to be. If you quote one of my answers above in your update, I'll...

    Edelbrock 1406 failed emissions

One additional note. The Carter carb (the Edelbrock's origins) was a production carb. The auto manufacturers did not test and tune each engine. They came up with a set of settings that worked for a prototype, and then tuned all of those cars the same on the production line. Same rods, same...

    Edelbrock 1406 failed emissions

They want the mixture rich across the board for people who don't tune the carb, so they don't burn up their valves and blame the carb. Also, our truck engines have very high vacuum compared to high-compression/high-overlap engines. So they are going to run richer on the same settings. There...

    Edelbrock 1406 failed emissions

Those are the standard jets and rods, so they are probably the stock 5" springs. The issue with the springs is that these engines pull so much vacuum, you are always in power mode with 5" springs. I stretched the 8" springs by 1/4" to get them to more like 9" springs. The springs should be...

    Edelbrock 1406 failed emissions

I tuned mine with an AFR meter. Here's the setup I have. It's probably close for you. secondary metering jets: Edelbrock 1426, 0.095" (stock jet) primary metering jets: Edelbrock 1425, 0.092" metering rods: Edelbrock 1461, 0.065" cruise, 0.057" power step-up springs: 8#

    Affordable engine replacement?

He can also run the stock Chevrolet Performance 10067353 with a dual plane manifold and headers, and not replace the cam, for $1500. That nets 250 hp and 350 lbft. Not quite as beefy a torque curve -- not as high, nor at as low an rpm -- as the 12-235-2 cam, but then he wouldn't void the...

    Affordable engine replacement?

You'll be happy with it. Lots of torque, pretty nice high end, pretty cheap. Not a ton of lift, so it won't be a short-lifetime deal tearing up the valve train. Your performance will be very dependent on how well tuned you get the carb. I strongly recommend dropping $300 on a good, wideband...

    Affordable engine replacement?

That's from the Camquest simulator. Yeah, yeah, I know, simulators. But it compares well to the stock setup, which the simulator predicts well. Holley has dual-plane manifolds as well, or you can ask Summit what will work.
