    84 c10 not running right

Or a rebuild kit, plus plugging the well holes. They start to leak, then it idles badly rich. Glad the timing check helped.

    Need better mileage

One additional note. Vacuum advance canisters are stamped with their part numbers. This stamping is on the "tang" of the canister that goes into the distributor, and can usually be seen by looking straight down between the can itself and the distributor cap. What is the stamp on your vac...

    Need better mileage

The 1405 is "calibrated for performance", which means it is even richer than most Edelbrocks. So your carb tune is all wrong for that engine. And it's showing. I get 10 mpg in town with a K10 with a TH350 and 31" tires on 3.73:1 axles. Edelbrock 1405 is .100 primary, .095 secondary, 70/47...

    Super hard starting motor

Gen 1 SBCs always leak. I found the combination of these three things very helpful. http://www.jegs.com/i/Proform/778/66292CC/10002/-1?CAWELAID=1710583770&CAGPSPN=pla&catargetid=230006180003463662&cadevice=c&gclid=CKDu3rHZ7ckCFYQ6aQodyvcHYw...

    Super hard starting motor

Edelbrock with electric choke? Adjust the choke per the instructions. Super easy. Look at the arm on the top of the accelerator pump. Driver's side front of the carb. There is a lever coming off the carb with three holes on it. In one of those holes is a rod to the throttle mechanism...

    Super hard starting motor

Hard starting cold sounds like choke or ignition timing. Do you get smoke when it starts? If so, what color is the smoke? Falling on its face when giving it the gas sounds like the accelerator pump is shot or incorrectly adjusted.

    84 c10 not running right

Yep, it's a tan wire with black stripe. There is a connector that pops out of the loom. It should either be behind the distributor or over by the brake booster. Disconnect that wire, set timing to 0* BTDC, then reconnect the wire. Oh, and disconnect the battery (-) terminal and reconnect it...

    84 c10 not running right

Check your base timing. When it gets cold out, the clamp can loosen enough for the distributor to rotate, and given the direction of rotation, the body of the distributor will always rotate retarded. This can result in what you are seeing.

    need some help 350 build

That's a lot of cam for a truck. You are probably better off with the 12-256-4 with 300/411 hp/tq rather than the 12-268-4 with 308/390. If you go with the 12-268-4, put a 2000-2200 rpm torque converter on it so you don't have to push it started. A 2800 rpm torque converter is probably too...

    262 to 350 crate: help

Changing the cam out on a brand-new 350/260 out of the truck is pretty easy and cheap. You can use the same lifters and springs. Changing it out once it is in the truck is a major PITA. Plus you need to change the lifters if the engine has been run AT ALL.

New to TBI, HELP! High idle problem has me pulling my hair out

You still have a vacuum leak, such as from a bad vac can or brake booster. So, lots of air getting in and the TBI is adding fuel to make the mixture come out right. Remove all the vacuum lines and cap off the ports and see what you have. If that solves it, add them back one at a time, and fix...

    Initial ignition timing

BTW, your optimum base timing is probably around 14* BTDC. With 22* of mechanical advance, that gives you 36* of total timing at rpm, which is the sweet spot for all GM V8s.

    Initial ignition timing

By "got it installed" I take it you mean the AR23 can. "So drove it around for about 40 minutes tonight. No knocking- which was good. And one added benefit was before anytime I would coast down a hill the exhaust would pop and backfire all the way down. Now it doesn't do that anymore." Yep...

For people with headers exhaust q's

For a 350, 2.25" duals is plenty. The H-pipe, which I strongly recommend, only needs to be 2". An X-pipe works, too, but is hard to do on a K truck. For a C truck, it's easy.

    Initial ignition timing

Your vacuum can is wrong. With that much engine vacuum, 20* at 7.5" means you will never get out of vacuum advance, and it's pulling in way too hard at 20*. That's why you're knocking. You want more like 15* (crankshaft, which is 7.5* camshaft) at something like 12". Switch to an AR23/VC1853...

I had a local shop bend them up for me. Duals all the way out the back, H-pipe, Flowmaster 40s.

    Need help I'm lost!

If it runs fine cold with the choke open the idle mixture is too rich, a common PO thing to do when he choke is broken rather than fix it. Warm the engine up, then lean out the idle mixture to highest rpm. Then try the cold start with the choke again. The idle mixture could be way rich...

Ignition Timing for First-Generation GM V-8 Engines

I pulled all my ignition timing rants from multiple forums together into one post for another forum, so I thought I would post it here as well. Ignition timing, including base timing, total timing, mechanical advance, and vacuum advance, which can be either ported vacuum or manifold vacuum...

    Electric vs Manual Choke

I currently have the Edelbrock 1406 with the electric choke. I adjusted it last five years ago. Temperature range since then has been -10 to +100 F. We can get bitterly cold and unseasonably warm days seemingly at random all winter. No problems, ever. The electric choke automatically...
