    My first square body

Don't forget, it's a simulator. It's best for comparing one Comp Cam product to another, but the absolute numbers bear a marginal relationship to a real-life build. It also assumes a very good state of tune of ignition system and carb. Given that, though, that cam would be a good choice...

    My first square body

Camquest simulator likes the 12-230-2 (XE250H) cam in there. Don't forget to change lifters and springs at the same time. Dual-plane manifold like Edelbrock 2101. Keep the Qjet, but rebuild it. Seal the well plugs. Make sure the throttle plate pivots are tight or install bushings. Looking...

    Intake and carb questions?

That's what I figured. High-temp epoxy can be used to repair it until you can get new headers, and at least fix that issue for the time being. One issue is to keep the epoxy from just dripping down into the hole and not patching it. The fix is to soak a small wad of steel wool in the...

    Intake and carb questions?

Is the exhaust leak a rust-through somewhere? Or is it a bad clamp/gasket?

    Intake and carb questions?

You should fix the problems you know about before you go off fixing problems that may or may not exist. Get the exhaust leak fixed. Change the vac advance can. Change the pop-up springs.

    Quadrajet for Holley swap

The maximum cfm a 383 can pump at 5000 rpm is about 550 cfm, so you're fine. The Qjet properly set up will be better than the Holley unless you are in a racing application. The Qjet may be off a 350 truck, in which case it is setup internally correctly. It may be leaking fuel at the well...

    Intake and carb questions?

Make sure you check the base timing with the vacuum advance disconnected. People will tell you that you should block the port, but you don't have to just to set the base timing. But you do have to disconnect the vacuum advance!

    Intake and carb questions?

OK, so the problem is that you have a mix of stuff on the engine that is pre-emissions and emissions-era. The vacuum canister is a '691 20 (you didn't give me the second number, but that is what should be on a '691), which is an emissions-era can that will give you too much vacuum advance...

    Intake and carb questions?

What is your base timing set at? What vacuum advance can is on it? (You should be able to see the stamping numbers on the arm of the vacuum advance unit if you look straight down between the vac advance can and the distributor cap.) Where is your vacuum advance connected, to the passenger...

    400 sbc build

For the OP: To summarize the discussion, such as it was, with 85C10owner. The 12-212-2 is a performance cam that has nice performance characteristics. I never disagreed. If you want a "torque monster", the 12-235-2 cam has more torque than the 12-212-2, according to the manufacturer. If you...

    400 sbc build

I still don't see how you compare two cams by riding behind only one of them, even if you have been building engines since you were 10 years old.

    400 sbc build

The torquiest engine GM ever put a TH350 on was 410 lbft. So you need to seriously build that trans or go to a TH400 to keep from littering the pavement with lots of little parts.

    400 sbc build

OK, so all I said was that, according to Comp Cams own information on their products, he was leaving a lot of torque on the table with the 12-212-2 grind, compared to, say, the 12-235-2 grind. And this was wrong how? You've argued that the 12-212-2 would generate plenty of torque. You've...

You've got actual builder's dyno sheets on both the 12-212-2 and 12-235-2 cams? Wow.

    400 sbc build

Of course. But he said he wanted a "torque monster", and with that cam he's 50, 60 ftlbs below where he could be. That's all I said. As far as hooking up a lot of torque, the 1970 Buick GSX Stage 1 455 had 510 ftlbs of torque, and was a lot lighter than our trucks. It only had 370 hp, but...

    400 sbc build

I use the Comp Cams Camquest software to compare the Comp Cams products. I don't usually offer much of an opinion of other company's cams. I figure the Comp software ought to do pretty well for their products, at least in comparing one cam to another. The software requires the entry of LOTS...

I have the Hooker headers, and they've lasted and lasted. Hooker 2453 for a K truck, Hooker 2452 for a C truck.

    350 long block from Summit

Yeah, that's the delivered price for the Gen 1 350 crate engine. You can juice it up with a new cam and such if you want (voiding the warranty), or just do some bolt-on goodies to get up to 250, 260 hp. But it's a good torquey engine that works well in these trucks. The going price through...

engine is popping through the exhaust.

Per these instructions, what did you set the vacuum advance limit at? http://www.msdignition.com/instructions/Products/84281.pdf?terms=84281

engine is popping through the exhaust.

Not what I asked. What is stamped on the vac advance can?
  24. rich weyand

engine is popping through the exhaust.

Which vacuum advance canister is on it? You should be able to see the stamping on the tang of the advance mech between the canister and the distributor cap if you look straight down into that gap.

    400 sbc build

Comp Cams says 2000-6000 rpm for that cam. That's not a torque monster. The 12-235-2 cam would give you an rpm range from 1000-5200, with 490 ftlb @2500 rpm in a 400 sbc with 9.5:1 compression. THAT is a torque monster. Cams are cheap. Don't spend a lot of money and time building around the...
