    Affordable engine replacement?

Buy the Chevrolet Performance 10067353 engine at JEGS for $1500 delivered. Put the Comp Cams 12-235-2 cam in it before you even run it. Use the springs and lifters that are already in it. Put a dual plane manifold like Edelbrock 2101 or 2701 on it. 290 hp @4000, 415 lbft @2500.

    rv cam questions

The Summit SUM-1100 is torquier than the SUM-1101. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-1100 Both of those Summit cams have very slow ramps. The difference between full duration and .050 duration is 76 degrees. What you get with the Comp 12-300-4 is faster ramps, of 48 degrees. Faster...

    rv cam questions

Ouch. That's a lot of tire diameter for 3.08s. (29/33) * 3.08 = 2.70 effective gear ration. That is, it would be like factory 2.7 gears on factory 29s.

    rv cam questions

BTW, if you get that cam, and you have 3.73:1 gears, you will need at least a 31x10.5 tire in the back to hook up. With 29" diameter tires, you are going to need something like a 275 or 285 tire, like a 285/60R15, unless you like lighting them up on dry pavement.

    rv cam questions

RV cam, sometimes called a marine cam. Lots of torque in the bottom of the range, may not wind as tight as a normal cam. Install the Comp Cams 12-300-4. Put in new springs; the stock springs will work if they are new. Put in new lifters; you MUST put new lifters in with a new cam. They bed...

    Square on the Interstate

Yup. It was supposed to be safer not to let people know how fast they were going. Prior to that, most auto speedometers went to 120, with 60 straight up in the middle. A glance could tell you whether you were going 60, or a bit above, or a bit below.

    Square on the Interstate

I've done 175 mile shots from Bloomington, IN to Champaign, IL at 75 all the way on the interstate multiple times. Ran 320 miles each way from here to my bro's in IL at 75 all the way on the interstate. Mine's a '78 carbed 350 with TH350 and 3.73 gears. As for mpg, I get 10 in town, 12 at 65...

engine runs like crap when cold

Let me guess. Someone took the thermac off and it's running an open-element air cleaner.

    350 Engine Build

Couple things: The 12-231-2 cam with a dual-plane intake manifold and headers will give you 418 lbft @2500 and 285 hp @4000 with everything else stock, including the 882 heads. The Holley is a great racing carb. Street, not so much. Stick with the Qjet and put a rebuild kit in it.

    factory-style tachometer

The GMSports tach is also spot on accurate. I put it in *and* a fuel gauge on the left, so I could have dual gauges for dual tanks. Note that the GMSports gauge is available in both typefaces, old and new, which I did not know when I got it, so I have the new typeface in my 78, but I like it...

    Adding relays to headlights.

Except it actually does make the headlights brighter, by getting rid of the voltage losses incurred from running headlight current through all that wiring and connectors. So it does describe the end effect.

    cam

    For a fun street cam for a low-compression 350, look at 12-235-2 or 12-231-2.

    cam

Download the Camquest software from the Comp Cams site and enter the parameters for the Chevy small block. That's a street/strip cam. 314 hp @ 5000, 375 ft lb @2500. Says cam RPM range is 2400 to 6500 -- from that you would expect to need a 2500 rpm torque converter, but the torque curve...

    cam

I assume Comp Cams number 12-552-4. Yeah, it'll do OK. 288 hp @ 4000, 407 ftlb @2500. Pretty nice numbers, and the torque comes in low enough to make it a fun driver. Stock torque converter will work fine. Make sure you replace lifters and valve springs with the recommended parts, and...

Oops. Yes, indeed. They fit all SBCs, which I assumed from the 5.3, but if it's an LS, then nope.

    Tuning issues

Too much base timing, too little vacuum advance, too little mechanical advance, and the mechanical comes in too early. Your timing curve is basically all screwed up. The timing curve should be determined by charge density and rpm. Everybody thinks they can come up with something better for...

I need a good engine recipe

Use an HEI distributor. Use an AR23 or VC1853 or equivalent vacuum advance can for the proper curve. I see these listed as equivalent: AIRTEX 4V1054 CARQUEST 57-7563 WELLS DV1853 GM 19138053 GM 1973482 ACDelco D1321A

    1975 K10 Engine Replacement ??????

Pretty easy to get 300hp and 400ftlbs out of a stock Goodwrench 350/260 with a cam change to a Comp Cams 12-235-2 or 12-231-2 cam. And that will be compatible (just) with your current drivetrain. You go 350-400 hp through the stock drivetrain and suspension and you will tear it apart. And you...

350 rebuild with a little more power

That's a lot of horses from a stock 350. Not "a little more power". More like double. You can get 400+ foot pounds of torque and 300-ish horsepower out of a cam change to the Comp Cams 12-231-2 or 12-235-2. To get up to where you are talking, go to something like a Comp Cams 12-238-2 and a...
