    Which dually - 8.1 vs pre-DEF 6.6?

I don't know how to spot them in the pickup trucks, without looking under the hood. They are easy to spot in the 2500 Suburbans though. The 6.0 burbs got the semi floating 14 bolt. But the 8.1 Burbs got the full floating 14 bolt and that can be spotted when following behind one. If I had to...

    6.2 alternator conversion

That one in your link doesn't use a sense wire? I thought the two that HAD to be used were sense and excite? You may have to explain this to me like I'm stupid, because alternators are kinda magic voodoo to me still.

Will this lift fit my k5/jimmy?

Since the kit looks to include rear blocks in the 2.5"-3" range, those could be ommited and a 2.5" shackle flip used instead. That would allow for use of the 56" springs. @82jimmy you would then only need different u-bolts for your 10-bolt. Places like ORD sell the shackle flip kits and u-bolts too.

Best way to transport 19 55 gallon barrels?

I believe it was probably both of us that would have mentioned treating the wood with diesel. For your trailer connector, you can get a direct replacement for your bumper that also has a 4-pin on it. I put one on a company truck back in November I think. I can look through my expenses and find...

Ok, I'm really curious as to HOW you did that? Personally, I'd run it. I'd say there's a 99.9999% chance that it would never cause an issue.

    Which dually - 8.1 vs pre-DEF 6.6?

I don't know about getting "walked on". Power is power, a lot of people have it in their mind that if something does a job at 2500 rpm, compared to 5000 rpm, that automatically means that it does it better. Just because an 8.1 or other gasser is winding out in rpm, doesn't mean it has a hard...

That would be fine with a quality rebuild, done by someone that actually knows what they are doing. Otherwise, the reliability would be a shot in the dark.

Accel HEI Super Coil (140003) Magic or Trash

It's been a long time since I timed one. I would be incredibly shocked if you couldn't tune one with standard HEI springs and vac advance. They have worked good enough for me that I haven't really messed with them. I have got snappy performance out of all of them. There is nothing really fancy...

    Which dually - 8.1 vs pre-DEF 6.6?

Iirc, the rear ends in all the 4500 and 5500 rigs is a Dana 110 or a Dana 135. We have a mixed bag at work. I've got a locker for the smaller axle, but unfortunately my U-Haul truck has the bigger 135 axle. *I could be off on those model numbers, but it's something along those lines.*

    Eaton MLocker

The MLocker, G80, Gov-Loc, Gov-Bomb... whatever you want to call it, gets a deserved bad rap. So many of them fail in spectacular fashion under normal circumstances. Now with that said, the larger units do seem to be more reliable, especially the 14ff version. The 14sf version is questionable...

    Tire/wheel recommendations

Ford used those metric "TRX" wheels in the 80's. They flopped. It's funny how the metric system is so easy, but it seems like an insurmountable task to get everyone to use it.

I guess I should also say, they "look" identical to the GM parts. I've bought many, but haven't needed to swap anything out on any of them. They seem to be very reliable. My newest one is probably 6 years old now.

It's not that they are harder to shift, it's just that they cannot be shifted as fast. That's a lot of mass to get shuffled around in there. There ain't no bangin gears and chirping rubber.

Those trucks are everywhere. They can be found cheaper from people that bought them and then realized they didn't need such a large truck. ^^^ Also an ex-U-haul. They made a bunch.

Scores from DIY Parts Yards, Pull A Part, U Pull It etc

Not from the junkyard, but close enough. Today I picked up these old lightweight plastic race seats that were put out for free at the end of someone's driveway. Once cleaned up, they'll be in pretty good shape. The padded covers are decent too. What the hell will I do with them? Haven't a...

I didn't realize that 2nd gear was that steep. However, that is a large rpm drop between gears, compared to a traditional 4 speed. A traditional car type 4 speed can also be shifted in a much more spirited manor.

For a fun driver, I personally would much rather have a trans with a 1st gear that is ideal at all times, as opposed to one gear that is too steep most of the time and another gear that is too tall most of the time. I'm under the impression that this is in no way shape or form, a work truck...

Yes, you are 100% correct. I only made that statement in case OP would be fine with a period correct, hot rod head. Because you know, popping the hood and showing off those double humps used to be a proud moment for many.

I don't understand this logic? They were used in cars like Impalas with highway gears that were probably heavier than short, 2wd C10's. How would it be any different than taking off in 1st with the stock 3 speed, or 2nd (1st after granny gear) in the 420?
