    4L80E Clearance Issues?

Both should fit without physical mods if a 700R4 or TH400 is now installed; I'd do a 4L80E as you end up ahead in terms of durability and strength. Especially if you want to upgrade the engine in the future, the 4L80E will be able to handle anything up to 600 hp as-is while the 65E will need...

    TH 400 needed

Give me a breakdown of the parts and their respective prices that add up to roughly $1,000 and I'll let you know if it's in the ball park or if you're missing or under-pricing anything. Keep in mind the unit would be going behind a 383, not a stock 350 from the 80s...

700R4 started shifting really high RPM

Yep, some of those 6.2Ds had the 700R4s...The governors came with slightly heavier weights and springs to promote earlier shift points but I don't think anything else about the diesel units are different than the V8 gas versions. TC may stall a little lower as well but that's it AFAIK.

TH400 Slipping When Warm - Chunks in Oil Pan

You're welcome. Looks like a combination of bronze thrust washer which sits on the front side of the rear planet and front/rear planetary teeth but hard to tell from the pictures...Let us know what happened when you open it up...Also, gear train failure (if that is what it turns out to be) in an...

TH400 Slipping When Warm - Chunks in Oil Pan

Yank it out and overhaul it! Debris like that in the pan = rebuild 100% of the time. check out my TH400 Information Thread for video tutorials, parts lists, tips/pointers and additional resources to help you with the overhaul.

    TH 400 needed

$2600 seems in the right neighborhood for a 700R4 behind a 383, and I've hand customers spend a lot more than that to get them to the point they're survivable at 383/Big Block power and torque levels...Whether you thought it was a stupid idea to dump $2600 into a 700R4 is another matter but the...

    700r4 pump noise

Amazon - search 'Transmission Pressure Gauge' ... Gearwrench and Matco have nice ones that are available on there. Test with the TV Cable connected and adjusted. You may or may not have to further adjust after the initial pressure test. Read through these instructions to familiarize yourself...

    700r4 pump noise

Noise from the pump usually indicates problems. Debris on the dipstick is most definitely NOT normal. The gray paste is actually a bi-product of distillation of the transmission fluid itself. Perform a line pressure test once you get it filled back up - you need to do this anyway if you...

    700r4 question

How old is your TV cable? Has it ever been replaced as long as you have owned the vehicle?

    700r4 question

Taking off from a stop in 2nd would be problematic but if you're not coming to a complete stop, still rolling then you may or may not downshift back to first. You can check the governor as well as do a line pressure test to see if anything odd shows up (governor valve should move freely when you...

Hoping to switch from 700R4, to a newer 4L60E

You can definitely go with a 4L60E, the main difference in terms of cost is the funds you'll need for the stand-alone controller to operate the 4L60E...There's several different options out there, including TCI, US Shift, MSD and more...Some of my customers running 4L60Es and 4L80Es use the TCI...

700R4 started shifting really high RPM

Probably the TV valve but it's good to check both...I'd do the line pressure test before you take anything off/out. Let me know if you need instructions for conducting the test.

700R4 started shifting really high RPM

Building transmissions, lol...Coincidently, I have two 700R4s going back together as we speak. I also suspect TV valve sticking, another mentioned Transgo's TV boost valve which is the way to go - I install them (and that shift kit) in all my 700R4s. The governor valve can also stick...

Hoping to switch from 700R4, to a newer 4L60E

Agree with bucket, if the only concern is building the 700R4 to handle your ZZ4's output and usage pattern for the vehicle. Let me know if rebuilding and upgrading the 700R4 is something you'd consider... If you'd rather just have full electronic control (ie plug and play, no TV cable to set...

    TH400 Rebuild or replace?

Sounds like it needs an overhaul or possible replacement if you completely grenaded the gear train. Check out my TH400 Information Thread if you're considering rebuilding it yourself...Tons of resources, guidance, parts lists, mods and more... If you don't plan on taking on the rebuild...

    PerformaBuilt 4L60E !!!

If it has a full manual valve body, the early shifting would be a driver issue but, assuming a forward auto pattern shift strategy, I'm thinking it's stack-shifting due to either leaks in the apply circuit for 2nd or a valve body problem, unless the vehicle's PCM/controller was specifically...

Is the 1-2 upshift the only gear change that is early? How early is it relative to what your friend expects the shift to occur at? Is it happening at part throttle or WOT (or both)? What is his final drive ratio and converter stall?

Help with a possible transmission issue

Grab a 1997-2000 4L60E core...If buying a two-piece case, ensure it has the 298mm input shaft as that (and the drum it's pressed into) will work in your 1988 700R4 and feature the updated return spring for which you can use the 4L60E 97+ bonded steel/rubber pistons....If you find two such cores...

Help with a possible transmission issue

Sounds like low roller one-way clutch failure which is somewhat common on those units...I see it from time to time and retro a 4L60E center support w/the wider one-way clutch assembly to prevent further failures. I have an entire playlist on Youtube for that transmission, including detailed tear...

Help with a possible transmission issue

Sound like forward clutch has burnt (or possible low roller one-way assembly failure), assuming you have the correct amount of fluid in the system. This is true regardless of what transmission is installed as they're all designed (and function) more or less the same way when it comes to the...

Unless the check ball seating locations are heavily worn and/or plate warped, damaged it should be reusable. I wouldn't buy any parts before you get it apart and on the bench...This way you can inventory everything you need and buy only those parts, unless this is your only vehicle...If that's...

    TH400 Information Thread

Hey bucket - converter stall RPM is actually the single most important factor to consider when mechanically calibrating a transmission's shift firmness (others are vehicle weight, application, gear ratio in the differential(s) & driver preferences). My guess is the feed orifices have not been...
