    Rochester Quadrajet Woes

True, unfortunately today’s gas is much different than what came out of the pumps when these cars were new. Meaning some calibration changes are needed to compensate.

    Rochester Quadrajet Woes

Yep, other than idle speed and mixture, that’s as far as most people will go with tuning. Most people don’t have any jets, no float bowl gaskets, squirters, or pump cams. Most of the same people who think their Holley carb is tuned have no clue what I just said means.

    700r4 tv cable adjustment

I stand corrected, it’s called the TransGo system correction kit. It’s pretty involved, but they do work. I had to use one when I put the 700 in my truck, the cop car transmission core I used didn’t work very well when I first installed it. https://res.cloudinary.com/transgo/wbiss/sk/SK700.pdf

    700r4 tv cable adjustment

As long as it goes into each gear with a solid thud (no slipping/sliding greasy, slide into gear) shifting too early won’t really hurt anything. There are probably hundreds of different spring/valves/govenor combinations HydraMatic used to get the shift points right for each application...

First real drive! Not tragic but not good. I think I need carb advice.

Rochester continually improved the Q-Jet design right up until it was discontinued. The “best” cores are from the mid to late 70s. Better quality casting, externally APT, better chokes, and some of the big block cores were rated at 800cfm. The reason the later cores get a bad reputation is...

I would really like a turbo 400 in my truck

I have a gear vender in my Olds, if I was looking for overdrive today I’d go 4L80 without hesitation. I bought the gear vender used about 15 years ago. At that time, the 4L80 stuff was much more expensive. Compare prices, you could do a 4L80 conversion much cheaper and have thr added bonus...

    Rochester Quadrajet Woes

Bingo!! Exactly my point, the people who say Q-Jets are junk are either too lazy to study them, too stubborn to learn, or too stupid to understand them. GM sold millions of vehicles with Q-Jets, every one of them was expected to start and run with drama or fuss, regardless of the environment...

    Th350 not shifting

Who did the rebuild? Before tearing into it, I’d get with the builder if possible. If that’s not an option, make sure the vacuum supply to the modulator is good. No vacuum= very late shifts. If the vacuum to the modulator is good, make sure the kickdown cable is free to move. You should be...

    Rochester Quadrajet Woes

No doubt the previous owner was a member of the “Q-Jets are junk” group. He clearly had no idea how a Q-Jet works, especially on the secondary side. Cliffs Q-Jet can help you with the parts you need.

    350 tbi running too cold

I put a piece of cardboard between the radiator and condenser on my Ram. The diesel engines hold almost 7 gallons of coolant if I remember correctly, it takes a LONG time to heat up, and when it’s really cold the temp cycles as you describe. Block off about half of the radiator, see what...

    Cleaning Fuel Injectors

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I don’t have much confidence in the injector cleaner in a can. Anyone who has tried to remove carbon deposits from valves with a wire wheel knows how difficult that can be. If a wire wheel on a grinder takes a while to remove carbon, what good will cleaner in a...

    700r4 Manual Valve Body

I didn’t know anyone offered manual valve body for a 700. I knew TransGo offered a kit to convert a stock valve body. A manual valve body without engine braking has to be driven the right way. I’m not sure if a 700 is like a 400/350 trans, but if you like your feet attached to your legs, DO...

First real drive! Not tragic but not good. I think I need carb advice.

Before messing with the carb, make sure the dwell, ignition timing, and the rest of the ignition is in good working order. You will never get the carb right if the ignition is less than perfect. If the carb does need work, be smart and keep the Q-Jet. Get with Cliff Ruggles at Cliffs Q-Jets...

    Tool for adjusting idle

Or remove the file screws and cut a slot in them. I used a dremel tool with the thick cut off wheel, it made a slot just big enough for a pocket screwdriver.

    Rebuild th400 or 4l80e?

You can swap in a 4l80 far cheaper than that, and gain the lockup converter.

Oil Pressure Drops After High RPM

Cut the oil filter open. If it’s clean of metallic debris, put a mechanical gauge on it to verify the oil pressure. If it’s still low, use 10W30 or 10W40. Shell Rotella 15w40 will definitely raise the idle pressure. Having said that, thicker oil is a band aid. Something is worn to cause the...

    A/C Question

If the truck is still driveable, take somewhere to have the system evacuated. That will answer 2 big questions: does the system still have refrigerate (meaning no big leaks) and if in fact it still still charged that means your issue is electrical. You’re probably going to find the system low...

Engine Block Heater for SBC 350

Before fooling around with block heaters, you need to get the choke sorted out. Zero degrees is not that cold. As mentioned, make sure the battery and cables are in good condition. If the engine cranks slow, it’s not going to want to start.

    Remote Start

I have used Viper and code alarm. I can’t remember what brand my son bought for his Yukon. It wasn’t a remote start or security, but did have keyless entry. Whatever brand it was seemed to work very well. He bought it thru Summit. You might check out Crutchfield. Their technical help might...

    transmission/oil cooler lines

I’m not sure what a fair price is, never had a pair to sell. Since im an Olds guy occasionally people ask if I know or have frame mounts for sale. The only pair I have are on my truck. I can’t think of any reason to keep the existing cooler. Either use a radiator or a stand alone cooler. Least...

    transmission/oil cooler lines

What year is your truck? I don’t recall any heat exchanger on my 81 GMC, but it’s been 30 years since I swapped in the 455. I have slept a lot since then. I’d suggest using a radiator with a trans cooler built into it, or using a stand alone cooler. Either way, don’t scrap the factory olds...

New build 454 and the wife hates the exhaust smell

Find someone who can tune the system for you. The self tuning will get it close, having it custom tuned will make a world of difference. Having said that, I’d consider using the matching distributor and using the sniper for timing control also. Hope you don’t have any issues with your...

Drop In Voltage from Windows and AC on

First things first. Remove and clean the battery terminals. Check the grounds at the engine, body, and firewall. Make sure the alternator belt is tight. Find someone with a charging system tester, make sure the alternator is actually capable of supplying the required current. Most vehicles with...

    Electric Choke Issues

With the engine completely cold (sitting overnight would be ideal) floor the throttle once. The choke plate should snap shut and the throttle go up on the fast idle cam. Loosen the screws for the choke heater, slowly rotate it until the choke plate closes, then go just a tiny bit further...
