    Temp gauge problem

Find the green wire that goes to the sending unit in the head or intake. Disconnect it, see what the gauge does. If it reads cold replace the sender. If it still reads hot follow the wire towards the firewall. Make sure the wire isn’t pinched under a valve cover or grounded somewhere.

Is it even possible to have a completely leakless 350?

If it ain’t leaking oil, you better add some! It’s pretty rare to find any old engine designs that don’t leak a little oil. They may not leave puddles, but the dust and dirt collects where the oil ever so slightly oozes out.

What size press (12 or 20 ton) for automotive

I have a cheap 12 ton harbor freight press I bought probably 20 years ago. I don’t think I have ever needed more than the ram can provide. What I have needed is the additional “room” in the press. For example, several years ago I needed to press the C-clip eliminators off my axles. The axles...

    Qjet fuel drainback information

So was I. I’m thankful to learn from others and at the same time a bit concerned about the future. Let’s use a carb as an example. It’s not too difficult to rebuild a Q-Jet or any other style carb for that matter. The difficulty comes from tuning or modifying one to do what you want it to do...

    Qjet fuel drainback information

There is always someone who knows something you don’t, learn from them. Cliff also had a Q-Jet forum, lots of very knowledgeable people there as well.

    Qjet fuel drainback information

You don’t buy a copy, and save the books for the less knowledgeable people. I have been building them long before the book was printed, and still learned a great deal.

    700r4 year interchangeably question

Look on the psssenger side of the case. If it has the St Louis arch casting line above the servo, and has a TV cable, it’s a good core to build.

    Qjet fuel drainback information

Good point, I forgot about the windowed seats. If anyone is serious about building a Q-Jet the right way, Cliff Ruggles book should be considered required reading.

    Qjet fuel drainback information

The fuel draining myth is just that, a myth. Think about it, for fuel to drain, fuel will have to go uphill, past the needle, out the filter housing, and then drain. What’s happening is a result of todays fuels. Gas made 30 years ago had additives for carbureted vehicles to prevent fuel...

    Steering column/ headlight wiring

As common as these trucks are, find a factory column that fits the truck. The dimmer switch pinout is the same for column of floor mounted dimmer switches. You will need to lengthen the wires to reach the floor. The wipers will be a little more difficult, it depends on what switch your new...

    New wiring harness difficulty

can you hear or feel the relay click when pushing the horn button? Find the heavy dark green wire coming out of the firewall connector. Check for power on it when pushing the horn button. If you have power, go to your nearest salvage yard and get a couple horns off a late model Cadillac or...

    WTB: 76 77 Jimmy radio

I just saw a Delco AM/FM cassette deck at an antique/flea market store in Coldwater Michigan yesterday. It was about a mile east of I 69. There was no price, no tag.

    New wiring harness difficulty

Make sure the brake lights and interior lights work. The horn is on one of those circuits. Make sure you don’t have a blown fuse. First, test the horns under the hood behind the grill. The horns ground thru the mounting brackets. Apply power to the terminal on the horn, it should sound...

    CB Radio

Here is a picture of me infuriating my wife. The truck was only a few months old when I did this. I cut the dash in my truck to fit a radio. As big as modern trucks are, there is little room for aftermarket radios. I did think this thru before I did it. I cut nothing structural, and had...

Stock 350 getting hot, but only on the highway with AC on

Unless it gets hotter, 210 is no big deal. Make sure all the shrouds and baffles are in place. Make sure the shroud fits snug to the radiator. Make sure any air that enters the grill has to pass thru the radiator on the way out. Make sure there is nothing trapped between the condenser and the...

Automatic transmission newbie asking basic questions

This is the correct way to set a TV cable. You will need a helper. Remove the air cleaner. Have a helper floor the gas pedal while you look down the throttle body. Make the the throttle opens completely. Sometimes the floor mat holds the throttle from opening, linkage flex, whatever. Bend the...

New to me truck/ what should i go through and look at

Look the truck over throughly, especially the suspension, brakes and electrical components. Check the belts and hoses. Keep an eye on the fluids for the first few weeks. Let the inspection and driving tell you what to fix first. Replace anything that is worn or damaged. Personally, I wouldn’t...

How to increase your odds for success at automotive wiring, electrical installation and trouble shooting.

The best advice I can offer is to buy a FACTORY service manual for any GM car from about model year 85 to the early 90s. Things like charging systems, power windows, door locks change very little from the early 70s to the mid 90s. The nice thing with GM is they tend to keep the same wire...

    Towing with a 305 V8?

Inattentive drivers, and the weezing underpowered engines of the day is the reason why they say not to tow in overdrive. As long as nothing slips in the trans, probably 80% of the heat created in the transmission comes from the torque converter. The transmission really doesnt care what gear it’s...

    Towing with a 305 V8?

Where is the choke pull off? Just my opinion, keep the Q- Jet. You will never equal the fuel economy or drivability of a well tuned Q-Jet with a Holley or edelbrock. Get the factory carb right, even if that means sending it to a specialist. If you’re serious about towing with that truck, put...

TH350 dipstick tube and dipstick for a TH400???

I’m pretty sure the tube won’t interchange, otherwise why would they have different part numbers? The dipstick might work if it’s the correct length. The full mark on the dipstick should be at the parting line between the case and oil pan.
