    Carb question

Of course it started, it’s a Q-Jet. Nothing unusual about it running well. The most common carb ever built, used on who knows how many millions of GM cars and every 4bbl squarebody.

Key wiring diagram for 78 chevy 1 ton van

I’m at work, it’s entirely too loud to hear your video. I assume you’re trying to figure out the crank circuit? The crank trigger comes out of the ignition switch as either a purple wire with yellow tracer, or a solid yellow wire. It then goes to the nuetral safety/clutch safety switch, and...

    Wire Connector Help

That’s either a 480 or 630 series terminal. If you need one in a hurry any GM dealer will more than likely have one.

    87 brake lights

Before doing anything, push/pull the hazard light button a few times, see if that get all the lights working. Find the brake light switch at the brake pedal. Use a 12 volt test light, make sure you have power on the orange wire. If not, double check the stop lamp fuse. If you have power...

    4.1 mpg?

How are you calculating distance driven? Fill up the gas tank, drive a known distance. Use the mile markers on the highway if needed. Stop and refill. Divide the miles driven by the number of gallons needed to refill the tank. Unless it’s way out of tune, or leaking fuel somewhere, I find...

TH400 (2WD): New tail shaft bushings are too tight. Why??

Assuming you can get the yoke to go is, smack the yoke with a rubber mallet. Hit it from the 12:00, 3,6, and the 9 o’clock position. Might have to do it a few times. If that doesn’t work, you might have to hone the bushing to get a good fit. A wheel cylinder hone is ideal for this job. Go...

Fuse box from 80ish up square?

Anyone in readerland with a seriously hacked up wiring harness? I’m looking to install a ATO style fuse box in my sons 71 El Camino. This will be a Frankenstein project, but nothing we didn’t anticipate. I built my own dash harness years ago for my 69 Olds. I used a fuse box and bulkhead...

    Torque Converter Recommendation

The 3-4 clutch has been a problem since day one with the 700. The 1st family of 700 used only 5 clutches, combined with the really sloppy clutch clearance GM recommended and the puny orifice in the spacer plate just makes it worse. HydraMatic made some improvements with the later 700 with...

    Fuel System Advice

I’d be more concerned about the flow rate of the switching valve. I don’t see this going well. Are you putting a pump on each tanks? Most electric pumps don’t like to pull fuel, add the restrictions of the switch valve I bet it’s worse. I’d be really surprised if a 3/8 line will be enough for...

    No spark need help

Read this: https://www.gmcmi.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/HEI-Testing.pdf Make SURE you have full battery power on whatever wire you have plugged into the BATT wire in n the distributor cap. If so, move on to the next step. If not, find out why. If you have power to the BATT wire, plug it...

    How do YOU set timing?

You don’t HAVE to own the fancy timing light. If you know the balancer diameter and some simple math you can easily calculate where to put the new mark

    Torque Converter Recommendation

Order a replacement remanufactured converter for the Suburban or similar heavy vehicle. Assuming the engine is stock other than headers a stock converter should work well.

    Right blinker acting weird

When I doubt, check the grounds. Check the bulb, make sure it’s the correct bulb. Make sure the socket is clean, add a little bulb grease to keep corrosion away.

    Reverse lights don't turn on.

More than likely the neutral safety switch needs a little adjustment. Before adjusting it, make sure all the plastic and rubber insulators and bushings are in place and good condition.

Trying to determine what converter I’ll need

Call your converter company of choice. Have as much info on the vehicle and engine as possible, the more info you have, the better job they can do selecting the right pump/stator/turbine combination to match. Don’t panic if they tell you a much higher stall speed than you think you need...

Side markers turn on when pressing brakes

Push and pull the hazard switch knob several times, see if that does anything for your market light issue. Sometimes that “fixes” quirky tail/brake/ marker light operation. If you are positive all the bulbs are correct, the sockets are clean and making good contact, and all the grounds are...
