'Puff' on start up! valve seals need replacing....

Seals are probably bad due to age. Valve guides will be easy to tell because valve stem will be loose with side to side motion. For rings and valve seat check would do a leak down test. Puff of smoke on start up is usually oil running down the valve stem either due to seals or guides/seals. If...

I use rope method, but air does make it a bit easier and if piston at tdc valve not going far

'Puff' on start up! valve seals need replacing....

Piston at tdc and nylon rope works. But compressed air is a better option. A good spring compressor tool makes the job a lot easier. Everything stock should be no need to replace the springs etc... Also be prepared to make a decision on what to do if you find wore out valve guides.

    gm vs aftermarket forged crank

I have a stock 2016 8.0l engine with factory forged 4.250 crank. Changing to forged rods and pistons. Likely going with brodix race-rite oval ports. And then choke it with a stock 7.4 vortec intake. For a moment was debating on 4.5 stroke eagle forged crank, but pretty much convinced my self...

    gm vs aftermarket forged crank

Had thoughts of going with 4.500 stroke, but it is getting very expensive as is already.

    4L80e Swap Build Thread

Most of the tools can be either recreated or gone around a different way of installing. But decent assortment of tools is needed. With absolutely no experience, i would likely recommend someone else do the refresh. I am slowly getting ready to tear in to the 4l80e. Been through 700r4, 4l60e and...

    4L80e Swap Build Thread

From what I was researching a complete upgraded 4l80e is almost $2k in parts(including torque converter, billet parts etc...). For stock 4l80e should be much cheaper. Jake's been referenced a lot for 4l80e builds with some bad reviews sprinkled around. But their build is also around $3k. From...

    gm vs aftermarket forged crank

Been thinking if there are any specific major differences when GM specifies their motor to have a forged steel crank vs various aftermarket options. Specifically P/N 19300876 , that is labeled as forged steel. 4.250 stroke bbc crank.

    454 Oil Pan

I had done c1500 oil pan by moving motor mount stands while holding the engine up with blocks of wood. Was not fun. But better than on el camino, had to tilt everything with trans unbolted to get clearance

    Seat Belts

All new seatbelts come with a single retractor on the bottom. Places like seat belt planet include the plastic sleeve and can have a gm logo. I had them make belts with specific length to ensure correct fit for the middle seat in a suburban

    89 Trans Am

Brought the camaro back in for some follow up work. Headers killing spark plug wires, some exhaust leaks, shifter linkage and trans pan gasket, and rear end cover leaking. Worst header design for spark plug clearance. I did heads/cam/intake/ac change up on it couple of years back

    89 Trans Am

Lower door seam was rotten, had to weld in a strip of metal and stitch weld back together. Bought a front bumper without license plate holes and needed one of the front bumper extensions. And slowly moving closer to completion.

Went to change an oil pan gasket and ended up doing all the bearings, oil pump, front and rear seals, timing cover seal, intake and valve seals. Then back to running moving things

Putting on fuel injection! And a bunch of other upgrades

Treating trans and control as a system.. Was meaning earlier controlled 4l80e. Not sure if on later year 4l80e gm removed the 3rd gear lockup option or not in the ecu. Lock up in 3rd only would apply if shifter is actually in 3rd.

Putting on fuel injection! And a bunch of other upgrades

Have not confirmed on the later 4l80e, but on earlier units ecu would actually engage lockup when selected in 3rd as well.

Another cam thread... But maybe not the usual.

305 heads worked fine for me on a 350 with the basic sum-1103 cam. Never went above 5k rpm, and never needed too. Had good off the line response. Was not in a budget for new heads for that motor. But was still around 12mpg range highway with th350 80mph. Changed to 700r4 as 3k+rpm was really...

leaks less oil than half of the gm things i own. Red one is a base stripped down model. It even worked out as a tow truck for a bit moving parts car around

There was 91 twin turbo awd version I put together while using red one as a daily. One of those buy the cheapest thing in the country and have it shipped sight unseen things. Turbo and awd make for a nice ride. But sold it rather quickly.
