WTF two new seperate thermostats not working+ more input needed

Air pockets under the thermostat and in the intake will cause significant delays in thermostat operation. It will usually eventually open but nothing like when it's touching water. I always break new engines in with no thermostat, add it when I dump the break-in oil.

What should I include in my emergency tool set?

Booster cables, crescent wrench, vise grips, Gorilla duct tape, WD-40, gloves, BFH. If that doesn't work, I have a work truck hooked to a car trailer with a winch. Ain't nobody towing my shit to any shop, I'll handle it myself.

    Resurfacing rotors, drums (esp OE)

When asked about turning the rotors, my Dad told the guy this story: A couple had 10 children in their old farm house. Time came for the 11th and they opted for a local hospital. After the delivery, the doctor asked if they wanted the little guy circumcised. Neither was familiar with the...

    Resurfacing rotors, drums (esp OE)

Use OEM rotors and drums until they are unserviceable. Unless, of course, you prefer having cheap Chinese rotors turned every year as they wear uneven.

    Questionable Engineering

The bastard I want to meet in a dark alley is the one that decided in the next generation (GMT400) that every bolt holding the trans to the engine HAD to be a double threaded stud with clinch nuts on the outer threads that have to be turned every single turn with a wrench until the very last...

    Square body on new chassis?

That's a lot of frame and junk visible under the body...front is only about a foot too tall. If all you need is a good frame, head south and southwest, plenty of 'em here!

AC Delco Ceramics. It's all I have bought since the first set I tried. Last long time, zero dust, stops great.

    '76 K10 400 Small Block Fan Shroud

^ nailed it. The 400 got a bad reputation because idiots were using radiators made for 350's and expecting the exact same result. I've never had one run hot, I always use a big block radiator and a shroud.

    '76 K10 400 Small Block Fan Shroud

Have you tried putting a big-ass box fan in front of it to help with airflow? We always have 'em handy, use 'em most times when we fire one up for the first time

    '76 K10 400 Small Block Fan Shroud

^ 509 is PROBABLY 2-bolt mains. The -511 is the early one that was only available with 4-bolt mains. I have a couple of '509's in my shop, both '75. Word is they got lighter in '76 or '77 with material removed from the mains. OP: You may or may not have any air going through your radiator...

400 SBC heads weird casting number

Bring a 305 around and I'll show you what I'm talkin' about! Matter of fact, I'll show you a very streetable 406 that'll handle anything most big blocks can throw at it. I ain't saying they don't run, but you were outrunning P.O.S. cars and trucks. A 305 doesn't set the bar very high.

    Let's entertain something for a moment...big block in a c10 + lifted/lowered hate lol

^ just missed a '57 close to me, rust-free body, no engine or trans for $3500. I have a '55 that a fabrication buddy is grafting a '59 Impala dash in for me. It's getting a pump gas 565 with tunnel ram and a pair of Holleys and sits on a '63 GMC chassis.

    Let's entertain something for a moment...big block in a c10 + lifted/lowered hate lol

^ good for you, I'm envious of folks with cool tools and the skills to use them. Resplining this one may be a bit much, Moser is supposedly the only one in the country set up for this particular spline The narrowest semifloater is in the 454SS, all others are a bit wider. Yukon used to have...

    Let's entertain something for a moment...big block in a c10 + lifted/lowered hate lol

First, shipping weights and actual weights are totally different things. I was just pointing out the differences. Having 700hp in a truck for burnouts is one thing, building it to go fast in a straight line is a whole different ball of wax. Getting it to launch and get that power to the...

    Let's entertain something for a moment...big block in a c10 + lifted/lowered hate lol

Up to 598 cubic inches can be built using a passenger height deck aftermarket block. This is EXACTLY the same size as any 454. Easy to get 750hp+ on pump gas...try that with a 454! Do some more research instead of believing shipping numbers. Tell us more about this blue-sky pipe dream truck...

    Let's entertain something for a moment...big block in a c10 + lifted/lowered hate lol

A big block with aluminum heads and intake doesn't weigh much more than an all iron smallblock. And a 572 weighs just about the same as a 454 (aftermarket block is heavier).

400 SBC heads weird casting number

I've seen a handful of 400's hand some big blocks and even LS engines their butts. Don't listen to all the B.S. hype about overheating and whatnot. Plenty of folks have had great success with SBC400's. Matter of fact, a 400 would be one reason NOT to LS swap something... As for the 305...

1986 C10- Is it reliable enough for a daily driver?

$14K should net you a nice truck and a week in a nice room in Vegas. We have a few like that local, but they have new crate engines, new paint and new interior but still aren't $14K.

    Mismatched heads?

We have local roundy rounders that have a class for only 305's. Works for me, I sold 3 for the same price as I was getting for good 350's.

    Mismatched heads?

As long as the chambers are similar size as are the runners, you'll be just fine. I betcha if you had run it before you knew about the different castings, you would have never known that they were different.

    Mismatched heads?

As long as the chambers and runners are close to the same size, you'll be fine. Every single person I know that built up a 305 regretted it. For the cost of a block, you can upgrade to a 350 block and even stroke it if you like. It's not just the cubic inches that's a problem, it's the small...

Just a little tip for you

Wrap a rubber band around a loose wobble socket or adapter. Lay a small piece of paper across a socket and jam it in with the bolt. It'll tighten it up enough for it to stay put while you thread it but will fall off when you're finished. For door hinge bushings - use a 1/4" bolt with a washer...
