Debris in motor- fell into Distributor hole

Thanks. I cleaned the seating surface and flushed out the distributor hole with a couple quarts of clean oil. I didn't get a chance to put everything back together yet, but it looks good. Didn't spot the gasket chunk coming out, but it sure doesn't look to be on the oil pump shaft or the...

Debris in motor- fell into Distributor hole

Thanks. Mainly I was worried it might be where it could block an oil passage or somehow jack up the oil pump when I put the distributor back in. I'll get everything set back in and then change the oil- I was planning on that anyway. Hopefully I'll have this thing buttoned up by this afternoon...

Debris in motor- fell into Distributor hole

Bad news- when I took the distributor out, a 1/2" long section of fossilized gasket teetered precariously and then dropped right down into the engine, no doubt chuckling evilly to itself the entire time. How bad a situation am I in? I can't see the gasket piece with a flashlight and mirror...

Ignition problem- New parts, no spark- 454 HEI

OK, been busy but I finally got around to working on the 'Burb. Good news and bad news- Good news- definitely seems to diagnose back to a bad pick-up coil. I have the new GM parts and the distributor is ready to stab back in. Bad news- when I took the distributor out, a 1/2" long section of...

Ignition problem- New parts, no spark- 454 HEI

OK, now we're getting somewhere. I retested with the meter between the red "batt" terminal at the distributor and a body ground and got 11.9v with the key at "run". Switched from body ground to negative battery terminal, same results- also 11.9v. So... Is 11.9v enough to run the coil? Thanks...

Ignition problem- New parts, no spark- 454 HEI

Yes! Thank you, that's what I was (unclearly) trying to ask. I need to re-measure, since I checked across the 2 terminals, and not red wire to ground. It sounds like my testing yesterday was not conclusive. Thanks.

I'll definitely give it a look, then.

Ignition problem- New parts, no spark- 454 HEI

OK. Worth checking in any case. It's cranking over just fine on the starter, though. Problem is it has no spark and won't fire off.

Ignition problem- New parts, no spark- 454 HEI

Thanks, this is very helpful. So, check me on this logic: -Neutral safety switch is not the problem per functional testing; the starter turns the motor over just fine in P or N, but not in gear. -Fusible link between starter and battery is not the problem per above So... If I'm...

Ignition problem- New parts, no spark- 454 HEI

Wish I'd grabbed some pics of the harness connectors while I was under the hood earlier, but here goes: There are 2 connectors that plug into the distributor cap. The one closest to the distributor body comes up from the "Radio Frequency Interference Condenser" inside the distributor, which is...

Ignition problem- New parts, no spark- 454 HEI

Shouldn't the ESC dizzy have a plug-in instead of a vac advance? Mine definitely has vac advance. What would indicate if it should have originally had the ESC type?

Ignition problem- New parts, no spark- 454 HEI

Hey, all. Finished replacing a bunch of tune-up parts on my '86 C20 Suburban but I'm still having problems. It's a 454 with HEI. Here's the history: It starting acting like it was missing a cylinder last Friday. When I tried to start it last Saturday it fired over and idled for a few seconds...

Gasket for EFE "butterfly" valve in exhaust?

I don't think so, I'm almost sure they are cast iron log type, and the AIR tubes are a lot smaller. Don't want to say for certain until I can get another look at it. I'll be able to get out there and grab some pics in the morning. The EFE is for sure mounted to the collector end of the manifold...

Gasket for EFE "butterfly" valve in exhaust?

Thanks, but I'm looking for the one between the butterfly valve and the manifold. This one looks like the collector gasket, which is on the other side of the butterfly valve. I'll probably end up using some hi-temp copper RTV. Thanks, -Josh

What have you done to your square lately??

Had a bad miss last time I drove it on Friday. Went to start it on Saturday and it started, stalled out, and then nothing. When I went to pull a plug boot to check for spark it crumbled apart in my hand. Until that happened I thought it was the carb acting up again. I had it on the list to...

Gasket for EFE "butterfly" valve in exhaust?

Thanks. I was afraid of that. Guess I'll see if the existing valve is good. So anybody have a gasket P/N? Thanks, -Josh

Gasket for EFE "butterfly" valve in exhaust?

Anybody have a link or P/N for the gasket that goes between the exhaust manifold and the EFE butterfly valve on an '86 C20 'Burb with 454? I've got a wicked exhaust leak, and it's coming from either that joint or the back of the manifold to block gasket. I haven't been able to pin down a...

Post your toys, square or not

Got a newer toy also- I swapped my '57 Dodge flatbed and one of my Taurus SHOs for this '72 Buick Centurion convertible in a 2-for-1 trade a few weeks ago. I'm trying to thin the herd to make room for the other cars when I get them out here from Florida. Ugly, but solid. Needs a top (clearly)...

Post your toys, square or not

Finally got my pics from my other computer. Here are my toys I have in storage out in Florida. 1940 Pontiac Torpedo Eight Sport Coupe and 1955 Chevy 3100 Series 2 big window long bed. This is the reason I bought the 'Burb and got into squarebody territory- I needed something to haul these out...

Tow Trucks, Wreckers and Car Hauler Discussion

And here's the project. 1957 Dodge flatbed, being prepped to go to a new home. I'm trading a guy 2-for-1 for this plus one of my Taurus SHOs (Taurii?) to get a 1972 Buick Centurion convertible. I'll post some pics in "Other Vehicles" when I pick that one up. -Josh
