I can't disagree with any of that.

    Edelbrock 1406 failed emissions

De nada. Thanks for letting me know. Curious also about what your gas mileage does.

    Carburetors

The throttle plate on the secondaries of the 1406 is mechanical, but there is a vacuum-operated air door above it, so the effect is the same. The best carb to run on the street is a Qjet, assuming you have one set up for the application. Don't just get one off the shelf that isn't...

500cfm edelbrock or 600 cfm holley??

Yeah. Everybody always wants to over-carb, and they get worse performance and worse mileage from the more expensive carb. And then the next step is not to tune it properly with an A/FR meter, because it's too expensive, then bitch about how the new carb performs. A 305 at 5000 rpm will pump...

500cfm edelbrock or 600 cfm holley??

A normally aspirated 305 can't pump more than 450 cfm at 5000 rpm, so either will do fine for volume. Some people say the Edelbrock is better for street use, the Holley for track use. Most carbs are more efficient running at a higher percentage of their rated cfm, because the stack velocity is...

    Electric fan Conversion

Nope. The stock heads on the 350/260 crate engine, which I think are 882s. For lots of torque in the bottom, heads aren't really an issue. The flow rate is not high enough at those rpms.

I wouldn't put Ford parts on a Chevy, but maybe that's just me.

    Cold Starting Issue

Push it once and hold it for a couple seconds, then release the gas and hit the key. When my choke pivots get dirty, the plate doesn't slam shut, it eases shut. You may not be giving it enough time. Spraying the choke plate pivots and the choke rod pivots with a little penetrating oil (like...

    Electric fan Conversion

Yes, but minor. Maybe 1/2 mpg. I got my K10 up to a solid 10 mpg on very short trips (~5 miles each way) of city driving, the first 2 miles of which are usually with the NP203 in LOC to keep the rear main output shaft bearing reservoir filled. This drive also includes the 60' high, 13* hill...

    Electric fan Conversion

I wrote mine up on another forum. Not much to it for an sbc, which usually run pretty cold. I don't tow or plow, so I didn't go with ducted. So here's a simple setup. http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=27899.0

    cam break in oil/adative

After the first 3000 miles you can go to full-synth. I run Mobil1 10W30 with half a bottle of ZDDPPlus every oil change. For break-in I would go with non-synth 10W30 with Comp Cams break-in additive, and use the assembly lube when putting it together.

    Affordable engine replacement?

First, it needs to say "wideband". The last one above doesn't in the title, but it does in the description. Second, you don't need a gauge. You are going to set it up once and forget it. That said, the gauge units appear less expensive than the box-type units. Third, you don't need...

    305 camshaft selection

From the thread I linked above: "A "lope" means the engine is uncomfortable running at idle. So how much torque are you going to have at 1000-3000 rpm? A lope in a V-8 is the natural result of being cammed for horsepower at 5000 rpm and above. How often do you drive at 5000 rpm? If you're a...

    305 camshaft selection

Well, I don't know anything about rollers. Flat-tappet stuff, sure. Read this thread for starters, beginning with this post: http://www.gmsquarebody.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16990&page=3

    quick easy-ish 350 upgrades

This is what a 350 cammed for the street sounds like. 300+ ftlbs of torque at 1000 rpm, 420+ ftlbs at 2500 rpm. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8w-DPV5_Xw

    quick easy-ish 350 upgrades

Well, there's several levels of utility there: You M-U-S-T replace the lifters when replacing the cam. You should replace the springs when putting in a 12-235-2. It's probably best to put new oil seals in it while you have it apart. It's a good idea to replace the timing set while you have it...

    Backfire on one side

I talked to my bro, who has far more knowledge than I w.r.t. engines. He says you likely have an air leak into the exhaust system, probably where the header connects to the exhaust pipe. The exhaust gases at idle, flowing past the leak, suck air into the exhaust pipe, and create a combustible...

    Backfire on one side

Sounds like a small air leak to me. When the throttle is open at all, you are running a lot of air, and the leak doesn't affect anything. When the throttle is closed, vacuum is high and air flow is down, and the air leak can cause a an intermittent lean miss followed by a backfire in the...

    Cam recomendations

That's what I figured you meant. The L-46 and L-82 ran the same cam, but the L-46 was pre-emissions and the L-82 was the smogger engine. Which would be great if the OP wanted to run 11:1 compression and burn $5/gallon avgas illegally on the street to get 350 hp and 380 ftlb with a 50-year-old...
