    Crate engine swap advise please?

OK, so I re-read this and maybe you are reading the difference. I don't know what light you are using. If you are reading the difference, that is too much VA.

    Crate engine swap advise please?

OK, so that is not 20 degrees of vacuum advance. That is 8 degrees of vacuum advance, which is probably too little. The following are "terms of art", and what we assume you mean when you use them. "Base timing" is what you read at idle when the VA is unplugged. "Vacuum advance" is what...

    Crate engine swap advise please?

Yes, that's right. Another issue is that the vacuum advance may come in too soon, keeping you advanced after it should have dropped out. Stock is something like the AR23: "5-7 7.5 @ 11-12.5", which is: Advance starts coming in at 5-7" Hg, and maxes out at 7.5* (camshaft degrees -- 15...

    Crate engine swap advise please?

^^^ This. I don't like that your tab and the delay timing light disagree. There's something goofy in all this. Here's my recommendation, reviewing all of the above: 1) Find TDC and get an accurate set of marks on the timing wheel and polish up the tab so you can see WTF your timing...

    Crate engine swap advise please?

At the crank: 16 base plus 15 VA plus 20 mechanical. On acceleration at rpm, that is 36 (base+mech). That's what MO is talking about. At idle is 31 (base plus VA). At cruise is 51 (base+mech+VA).

    Crate engine swap advise please?

MO, without a meter reading from him you don't know that. You can't just read their stupid chart, which makes no allowance for displacement or vacuum or anything really except "how far off Edelbrock stock am I?" I'm running 62/52 on a 95 jet, which is same as 67/57 on a 98 jet, and I am dead...

Not necessarily the same cam, but he's pulling 19" of vacuum, like me, and that tells a lot about his cam. That's also was the carb is seeing: same displacement, same vacuum, same carb response. That's why I suggested he try my mixture settings. My recommendation remains to buy the meter...

    Crate engine swap advise please?

He's not lean, MO. I am at 600 feet above sea level, and I set my mixture to the numbers with an A/FR meter. 12.5 on secondaries, 13.5 in power and 14.25 in cruise is not lean, no matter what the Edelbrock charts say. The issue is that the 1406 mixture charts may be fine for hot rods or...

Whoa. Stop. Make sure your timing marks are accurate and you are timing it correctly before you go changing everything in sight or you will end up chasing your tail. This -- "It's hard for me to read the deg. Because I have not figured out how to mark my balancer such that a mark is ever on...

A note on carburetor flow capacities

The topic comes up often: how big a carb should I put on my XXX engine. Bigger cfm numbers -- higher flow capacity -- is always better, right? No. Carburetors approximate the correct mixture for the engine. Exactly correct mixture can only be achieved in a closed-loop system, like...

    Issues

The Eddy 1406 does not have an internal fuel filter. So you should be able to see a fuel filter in the line from the fuel pump to the carb, usually at the carb end. Do not use a glass filter. I use a metal filter on mine, which you can see in this photo just behind the heater hoses.

    Rattling is driving me insane

I had a rattle in the transfer case shifter. Turns out the the handle that sticks into the cab is not the actuator in the shifter mech, one is bolted to the other, and one of the bolts had come loose.

Remember that crankshaft degrees is double camshaft degrees. That's only about 5 camshaft degrees of VA. I would probably go 7.5 (15 on the crank). If you are getting any knocking, back off two degrees and try again. I don't know what you mean by "bottom end knocking" though. Red line...

    Issues

Couple questions: Did you change anything else that may be a cause? Have you ever cleaned the step-up pistons and cylinders? They get dirty, and then stick, and then give a hesitation on acceleration. You loosen the two screws on the top of the carb under the air cleaner, swing the little...

You'll be fine with the G80. I haven't had any problems. I also don't try to drift the truck, or spin the wheels just for show.

You now have 36* BTDC with your foot in it once the rpms come up, which is perfect. You also have 56* BTDC at cruise when both the mechanical and vacuum advances are in. Above 52* BTDC at cruise, you may get some surging. Watch for that. I would still back off the vacuum advance 4 crankshaft...

The Eaton Gov-Lock RPO code G80 is also known in some circles as the Eaton Gov-Bomb. If you spin both rears while making a tight right turn, like pulling out of a parking lot or side street into traffic, you can dynamite the posi inside the diff, which shoots shrapnel all over, including in the...

Let me tell you a little story. Back in, oh, 1966 or so, my cousin had a 55 Chevy. Bondoed up, grey primer, stripped the (heavy) bumpers off, the whole nine yards. He put a 435 horse 427 in it, Didn't change anything else, just the engine. He could spin the tires all day long. So he put...

Give it the other four degrees of base timing, and back off the VA to 16 crankshaft degrees. It makes a big difference. Buy the AF/R meter and get some numbers. A 12-230-2 cam -- no other changes -- will give you 290 HP @ 4000 and 420 ftlbs @ 2500. With 3.73:1 and 28" tires you won't be...

Sure, why not. The bungs are cheap. They go on the exhaust pipe, right after (about 6" is good) the header flange.

    Crate engine swap advise please?

Thanks, but there's also a lot of stuff I'm dumb as a post on. Haven't ever done it, or it's been a long time, whatever. I just read what other people say and try to learn, from MO and others. Whenever I do something on the truck, I research it pretty heavily before I do anything, and...

    Crate engine swap advise please?

Yeah, I am way off the chart on mine as well, but the AFR meter says I am spot on. I would never have gotten there using the chart without the meter. 65/57 should be real close. Maybe a little rich in cruise, but not bad. I'd leave it for now unless you are going to buy a meter. You need to...

    Crate engine swap advise please?

OK, couple things. 18" of vacuum means you should be running the 8" step-up springs in the Edelbrock. I stretched mine so they rested at 1/4" longer than they came at, to get closer to 9". The rule of thumb is the springs should be 1/2 of your idle vacuum, so that's why I say switch to the...

I would just stay away from the whiz-bang stuff. The problem with a fully adjustable gizmo is you have to fully adjust it. ;)
