Best stock head and Aftermarket cam combo

If it's been recently rebuilt, and the Vortec heads start adding up to more than you want to do for a hold-me-over-I'm-gonna-build-a-new-engine-up-later-anyway, you might just replace the cam. 12-300-4 is what I have, with same as you on everything else (carb, pipes, etc.). 275 hp, 422 lbft...

    Vacuum line from air cleaner

I disagree that it is not important. See this post in another forum. http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forum/general-discussion/c10-forum/498719-induction-system-350cid-headers.html

    Crate engine swap advise please?

Yeah, 13 at idle is good. The reason to run the idle that rich is that the mixture at such slow stack velocities doesn't get a lot of turbulence, so it can be uneven. If you try to set the idle mix at 14.7:1, some cylinders will occasionally see a mixture above 17:1, and you will have an...

I just check mine with the engine off. Yeah, somehow you are getting extra gas in there on power. What does your idle mixture read at?

You still running the stretched 8# springs? Do your step-up pistons move freely?

    No filter, making a setup

Don't put a filter on the suction side of the pump. Just put a metal can in-line fuel filter in the supply to the carb. That's all you need.

Those are the numbers with 68/57 rods in .098 jets? Wow. That's really rich. I assume the 9" springs, right? You can tune idle, cruise circuit, power circuit, and secondaries (WOT). Not sure why you think you can only use AFR meter to tune cruise and WOT. Cruise at 10, should be 14.5...

    Crate engine swap advise please?

OK, so you're rich as hell in most modes, which is what I figured. Cruise circuit looks lean. The bog is in transition. Which rods are in it now? You want to get to 13 idle, 14.5 cruise, 13.5 power, and 12.5 secondaries. Idle is idle. Cruise is driving along at 30-40 mph without...

Good! So now we're down to getting the mixture dialed. Your timing numbers are real good for now. Once the meter is in and you get the mixture dialed in, you can probably go another 4* on base timing, which will increase power across the band.

Is that with the 8" springs?

    Crate engine swap advise please?

Make sure the old one works, then put it in there. You can always replace it later once things are running right if you want to. I find a lot of the whiz-bang gizmotron aftermarket parts to be more of a PITA than a benefit.

    Crate engine swap advise please?

Yup. The aftermarket HEI distributors have adjustable vac advance cans so you can set it to be what you want, since there were so many variations in stock cans and they don't want to have to stock 97 different products. The problem with anything adjustable is that it must be adjusted. I would...

    Crate engine swap advise please?

This is very important to get correct. Play with it with your vacuum pump and gauge until you get it correct. If you are holding VA in all the time, you will never be able to tune the engine properly. Remember the spec for the stock AR23 can: 5-7 7.5 @ 11-12.5 - starts pulling in between 5"...

    Crate engine swap advise please?

Exactly. And that's exactly where I was before I got the meter, and getting 6mpg on top of it. Oh, I wasn't lean! After I got the mixture sorted, I was surprised at how much timing it would take. And timing is like a horsepower adjustment right up to the knock limit. More is gooder...

    Crate engine swap advise please?

Wait for the meter! You can also bog too rich. Get the numbers first. It'll also bog if his step-up springs are too light or the pistons are stuck.

    Crate engine swap advise please?

Beats hell out of me. Funny what you learn when you actually get the AFR numbers though. I would never in a million years have thought these needles would be right either, but that gives me the correct AFR across the range. I got the AFR meter after stumbling around with the chart and never...

    Crate engine swap advise please?

Timing went up and down as they tried to meet pollution standards in different ways. Best performance and best mileage are when timing is as advanced as possible without detonation. Suggestion is to keep the timing lower than optimum until you get the mixture straightened out and nail down the...

    Crate engine swap advise please?

Yup, now you got it. Exactly correct, except I would say the sweet spot is 36* for a Chevy V8, which is why I like 16+20 (or with 21 mechanical, 15+21) to get 36. Limit the VA to somewhere in the 12-15 range. Stock is, I think, 15. The bog now is in your mixture, I think. Get that meter...

    Crate engine swap advise please?

You can see the centrifugal advance kick in on the timing light if you have someone slowly rev the engine higher just sitting there in Park. It should be all in before 3000. I wouldn't mess with the mechanical. Part of the problem is you have too many available adjustments as it is. I have...

    Crate engine swap advise please?

OK, but it's gonna run lean unless you have your foot into it enough for those springs to win against the vacuum and pop up. Running lean is not good. Especially when you are already trying to figure out a knocking problem.

    Crate engine swap advise please?

And with 19" of vacuum, you want the 8" springs.

    Crate engine swap advise please?

Understood. What I don't understand is whether the light is showing you difference (VA only) or total (VA + base) the way you are using it. 15* on the crank is what you want.
