    Alt. signal wire

I just went on line to look up what a new stator would cost. Fairly cheap. But what I discovered was that's that's what makes the difference between my 63 amp and a 140 amp alternator is the stator. Hey, what do I know. Well, seeing that, and if that's what controls the amperage, that may be...

    Alt. signal wire

@SirRobyn0, Thanks for suggesting to replace that alternator. That's what it was. I don't know all the trouble shooting and have no idea what it would have been except that the stator windings were over fifty years old. I don't remember ever changing the stator out. I replaced everything...

    Alt. signal wire

The truck is running!!!!! I finally got it going tonight. I tried earlier today and got nothing. I had taken the ignition switch out thinking it may have been it and put in a spare. It was junk so I took that first one (new) and took it apart. It was perfect inside. Put it back together...

    Alternator not charging at idle

@iamtherealJayy, show us a pic of your battery posts. I can't tell what you've got other than it's a side post. Also, take that neg. ground off your alternator support bracket and with something abrasive clean that spot free of any paint, rust, dirt where the end of your battery cable touches...

    10SI Alternator rebuild

@Juggernaut, Thanks loads, Juggernaut! Yes sir, you sure don't want to get the windings wet. Not just a little wet like you ran through a puddle on the street, but the kind of forging you guys do! Holy smoke! Now we get a lot of rain down here in Louisiana especially here in the last few...

    Alt. signal wire

Then I soldered the other end if the new signal wire onto what was left of the old signal wire at the ignition switch plug (black), and shrink wrapped it Below pic, I slid the fiberglass sleeve down on the new signal wire. It's a little short but I figure if it ever gets burned again, god...

    Alt. signal wire

I determined where to cut the alt. wire coming through the firewall so I could pull the instrument panel out later and not pull on the alt. signal wires, spiced the alt. wire, signal wire, and alt. light wire together with a ring terminal. I crimped it on both sides then soldered it at the ring...

    Alt. signal wire

Okay, I just got my new fiberglass sleeve in the mail. Now this is more like it! A little blurred, but you can see, it's 1/8" diam. Most of these kinds of product places carry only 1/4" as the smallest size. But 1/8" is easy to find. And this stuff is cheeeeeap.

    Alt. signal wire

@SirRobyn0 Ha, ha, ha, ha,! That's funny! What's funnier is I know what that gasket is! It also looks to me like rear main seal packing as well. That's what I first thought of when I saw it. Well, on further review of the schematic, ignition switch drawings, and fuse panel drawings, I think...

    Alt. signal wire

@SirRobyn0 , No I don't have one of those. Well, my fiberglass sleeve came in like they said it would. Fast, huh? But the weave wasn't what the photo looked like. I thought it was going to be a lot tighter. So I emailed McMaster-Carr tonight and asked them if they had any with a tighter...

    10SI Alternator rebuild

@Big Ray Usually it's a voltage regulator that goes out sometimes in mine. But after I think, three times I'll take a look at the bearings and then I'll do that to. But I bought a hand press, the kind that has a square part that the handle gearing lowers down on a part? I used to have to take...

    Alt. signal wire

Okay, I'm at the point where I'm about to hook up the alt. signal wire back into the (black plug) ignition switch wire, #12 orange. I've looked for the old alt. light wire and I can't find it anywhere. It's supposed to come out of the interior firewall wire block but it's not to be found. I...

    Alt. signal wire

Below is the signal wires new hole. I'm not going to put the alt. signal wire in the wire bundle on the inside anymore. I'm running it by itself, just in case. It took me several days to repair all the wires that got burned when the signal wire went up in flames. I had to cut all the damaged...

    Alt. signal wire

Today i re-routed the alt. signal wire. Here is where it comes into the cab from the other side. I double tested it for continuity to make certain it was the correct wire. Here's the engine side. I had cut it loose already. I will solder a new wire the same color to this wire, hanging...

    10SI Alternator rebuild

I wanted to add a couple of little minor details about these screws. This is the capacitor screw, 1/4" socket but it's the shortest one in the inside. This is the screw for the rectifier that is the same as the one's that hold the brush block. So if you have a little pile of screws just...

    10SI Alternator rebuild

Here is where that pin, wire will stick through the back of the case when you assemble the voltage regulator, and brush block, Diode Trio going back together. I thought I would include this for GP (general purpose), if you find that you need to correct an under charge condition and the...

    10SI Alternator rebuild

To put the brushes back in the brush block push the end with the braided wire on it first, back into the block. Now, be aware, if you don't get the brush in the hole right off it can slip off the spring, after all the brush is graphite and is slippery, and if it does slip off the spring it can...

    10SI Alternator rebuild

This is the voltage regulator. It is probably the one part that is the cause of most of the problems with this type alternator, although the other parts do have problems to just not as often as the voltage regulator. Although the Delcotron 10SI is probably one of the most reliable alternators...

    10SI Alternator rebuild

Next, remove the nuts holding the stator, three, using a 11/32" socket. There might be three little lock washers under the nuts, remove them before lifting the stator out or the washers may pop off the screws and you may loose them on the floor. Lift the stator out and set it aside. You'll be...

    10SI Alternator rebuild

Pull the halves apart. Separate the halves and set the front half aside. the only test for it is testing the slip rings the center of the rotor with the shinny rings on the shaft where the brushes run. we'll cover it later. Here's what made that clicking sound as you pulled the two halves...

    10SI Alternator rebuild

@SirRobyn0, and anyone else interested. Remove neg. battery cable from battery. Remove alternator from vehicle. The first step is to mark the three sections so that you can keep the "clock", which is the way your alternator is turned on your engine, i.e. how your alt. wires come up. is the...

    Alt. signal wire

@SirRobyn0, You said you don't build your own alternator? I do. So what I've done is to take a pictorial review for you and anyone else who is afraid to tackel that job. It's real simple. Now I don't explain principal but I show you how to take it apart and put in the voltage regulator and...

    Alt. signal wire

@SirRobyn0,Here is the final wiring. I stated yesterday I had to redo where the new amp gauge wire was located because I added the #16 fusible link wire to the alt. wire so I had to redo the new amp. gauge wire. That's okay. Below is the splice that Autometer said to do with the alt. wiring. I...

    Alt. signal wire

If you go back to some of my previous posts on the wiring I've done you can see how it was wired before this time. I had a #12 wire going over to the junction block from the alternator. But since this time with the fire and all I had to get the schematic out and make some corrections. As long...
