    Keyed the same ignition switches

Most older GM cars have this key coding. The square ignition key usually has one type of code and the round door key will have another. The codes changed every year. See the link for the breakdown. Back in the day we had 1989 Caprice patrol cars. The ignition and doors were keyed using a...

Nope, found those on the internet. Blue is my favorite color. This is my current square.

Gear ratio advice 14 bolt BBC

My current K30 has 3.73s. My last truck had 4.10s. Both had 32.8" tall 33's and automatics. The 3.73 is running around 2500 RPM at 65 MPH and the 4.10 was closer to 3000 RPM. It depends on your use. If you are running a stock size tires 30-31 inches with the manual you may be okay with a...

    Brake Issues - RPO codes

This came up a while back on a different thread, but up until about a year or two ago I didn't realize GM made a light duty 3/4 ton in a Square body. I was aware of them in the early GMT-400s. This picture is from my 1985 sales brochure. The first K20 listing has a lower GVW and probably the...

16 mile (Sixteen mile) Time Capsule

I don't know if there is a way, but if the admin could attach all those photos somewhere here it would be a great reference.

    Correct bumper for '78

I hadn't even thought about the 67-72 fleetside. I had Square on my mind. You can see here the step side has the same profile, but the ends are curved. The 67-72 is flat on the ends.

    Door Panels

I put 81-87 door panels on my '79. You will have to change the door handles and arm rests. The door sweep might be different, too.

California Square Body fans - Proposal to extend smog exemption model years

Another problem we run into here is even if you have a Federal emissions vehicle, you have to prove it. If you don't have the original emissions tag or proof it originated as a Fed vehicle, you have to meet the California requirements for emissions equipment. The other thing our "great" state...

    Preformed hoses

I had an issue with my '85 K30. I couldn't find a replacement. As you can see from the pictures there are multiple bends. I ended up using a part from Eckler's Corvette GM 3994298; Eckler’s 6271610 - 1970-81 Corvette Formed “S” Hose (Frame Fuel Line to Fuel Pump) Photo #2. To get the...

    Stock rim width

To be honest I don't know. On the Land Cruiser pictures I found with these wheels they look hub centric. I don't know the hub size though. For what its worth, I've owned 8 Square body trucks and at least a half dozen or more other GM trucks (3/4 and 1 ton) all with aftermarket aluminum...

Use "Choke" light as MIL/CEL in LS swap?

I had an '87 C30 years ago and recall it having a Service Engine Soon filter in the gauge cluster. You could maybe replace the Choke filter with the one shown below. The other thing you could do is find a pigtail like in photo #2 to illuminate the light. It is used to illuminate 4WD. That...

    R20 Stock Ride Height?

One issue I had with my '88 C20 Suburban (454) was the R/R spring had sagged causing it to crab walk. I know the PO had used it to tow his race boat before I got it. My spring on the right was 1/2" longer than the left.

    Stock rim width

Summit Racing has a at least a half dozen wheels. I don't know the hub diameter you need but it will narrow it down. Wheel Vintiques has a steel smoothie wheel in a 6 on 5.5", 16x8, 4" BS, 4.25" bore. Their page shows $115 a wheel. The second picture is a 16x8 with a 285/75R16...

School me on accessory fuse boxes

I found this 4 circuit marine distribution box on Amazon (left side of first picture). When I got my truck only one of the two batteries were installed. I have my bed lights, aux back up lights and stereo going through the second battery.

    Axle Identification

Interesting. My '88 C20 Suburban had a 454 with 4.10's and it ran like a scalded ape! I've had 4 other Suburbans with 454's or an 8.1L with 4.10's and they really tow better than my current '01 Suburban 2500 8.1L with 3.73's. Mileage sucks, but they are more responsive than the 3.73's. I...

    New "Old" Daily - 8.1L

Busy week doing repairs. I knew the R/F hub bearing was on it's way out. I was getting that lovely clicking noise on turns. Funny thing is I helped my buddy change that same one out about 6-7 years ago when he had the truck. I wish I knew what brand he used because it only lasted 40k miles...

    Axle Identification

    I've never seen a 3.21 gear in a 3/4 ton Suburban, especially with a 454. I thought the highest gear (not numerically) was a 3.73? Look for GT4 = 3.73 or GT5 = 4.10 on the RPO codes. G80 is a Limited slip.

    Vintage Air: Weekend Install?

What A/C Compressor are you using?

The local shop, a Vintage Air dealer, ordered them for me and gave me his discount. They were the same price on line. The shop is a one man show and he's close to 70 years old. To expediate the install and save some labor, I installed the compressor and bracket myself. I had to paint the...

    Headliner install in no-factory-headliner cab?

I installed one in my last truck, '79 K15. Look at LMC the have a pretty good diagram. Install the rear cab corners first, second the front A pillars, then the 4 metal trim pieces. Once you're happy with the fit, go remove everything so you can install the headliner.

What A/C Compressor are you using?

My system is stock except for the Sanden SD5S14 compressor and bracket. The rest of the system is totally new and works great. Had a local A/C shop make up some hoses and charge it.
