What have you done to your square lately??

Got busy and stripped down the parts truck this weekend. Cab is ready to be prepped, need to cut and transfer removable hump in trans tunnel and one dent repair area. Got a good set of rear springs withe extra overload, awesome running 454 that after brief rookie has been out before, makes me...

What new tools have you got lately?

Nice! I got a battery B&D, only good for little jobs though. Got tired of 2 stroke so switched to a ryobi 4 stroke last year, has the detachable tools so makes swapping from string to brush blade easy, still has the primer bulb on it though. One trick I figured out was DO NOT use gas with...

What have you done to your square lately??

May have found me another parts truck, an '89 C30 flatbed, 454, 4 speed dualie, going after it tomorrow and if motor sounds good it's going on the trailer.

    ignition timing crazy

Trick I've used in the past for stubborn crank bolts is disconnect ignition power to distributor, long breaker bar with 6 point socket on the bolt and bar wedged against bottom of frame (for SBC since it's clockwise rotation, that would be passenger side) and bump the starter. I always make sure...

    ignition timing crazy

So, starting from the beginning...this was an okay running truck and you decided to do some tune-up items or a not running for crap that you were trying to make run good? Bottom line, what was condition before it was touched and how many miles are on the engine (assumed miles). On a well used...

What new tools have you got lately?

Not new, but new to me... a PENTAX ETH-20F Digital Theodolite. Needed to do some surveying, shooting property lines on a decent slope, so with 30x mag seemed to be the cat's meow. Always wanted one, just new is waaayyy out of my price range.

What have you done to your square lately??

Cut the weeds around my lonely plow truck project...and picked up a free 350 4 bolt with bad rod bearing from a 78 K20.

    C30 vs K30 cab difference

Cab is 150 miles away...whole truck actually, that's why trying to figure out before I go the distance with a car trailer. It is a 1980 C30 dually, was 454, 4 speed. Mine is 1980 K30 350, automatic. Both are A/C cabs. This is the C30.

    C30 vs K30 cab difference

Anyone know if I can take an '80 C30 4 speed cab and swap it to an '80 K30? I have a column for auto, just not sure how much difference in the trans tunnel. Looking at pictures, the C30 does have the removable tunnel like a K30. Found a rust free cab (:jawdrop:), trying to figure out if I can...

Anyone find value in putting quick connects for hydraulics for plow lines

Not even sure how much of a difference it is, but I'm guessing that the assisted brake pump has a higher capacity than a standard pump. I just use a standard pump on my old high boy since it has manual steering box anyways. A power steering pump is just a hydraulic pump anyways, a lot cheaper...

Anyone find value in putting quick connects for hydraulics for plow lines

On my old High Boy plow truck, I just use a power steering pump, an old two coil 12vdc hydraulic valve I got from ebay and an old sawmill hydraulic cylinder for the lift. One thing you have to do is install a minimum recirc around the valve or you end up burping the pump out the cap. If you get...

What new tools have you got lately?

Broke my last one, had to buy a new kit. I use them for electrical panel building at work, but they work great for automotive too. Saves time since it's just one shot through to drill, tap and debur, just make sure you use a good tap gel or they don't last very long. Made by Greenlee.

Talk me out of cutting my dash

I had thought about doing one of those in the past, was worried it might sag in the middle. Does it have any type of support in the middle or is it just fastened around the edges?

Another option I've wanted to try is an overhead console. Here is one for a golf cart https://www.amazon.com/Madjax-Universal-Overhead-Stereo-Console/dp/B00O6AWXUU and one for a UTV https://www.amazon.com/ThunderBuckets-UNIVERSAL-OVERHEAD-CONSOLE-SPEAKERS/dp/B07B62Z48F .

Talk me out of cutting my dash

Only problem is that most of the dashes I've seen cut out were terribly butchered beyond actual din size so looked like shit afterwards. The key is to make it look like it was done by the factory. Very few people seem to take pride in any type of craftsmanship these days.

Put in one of the classic digital ones that mount in the same hole. They have aux jacks so you can hook up a disk changer behind the seat and not have to chop the dash.

    Tach conversion kits

Was just looking through the new LMC catalog and found they now offer a tach conversion kit...about damn time someone did this. Going to order one for my plow truck and see how it goes. https://www.lmctruck.com/1973-87-chevy-gmc/gauges/cc-1973-87-tachometer-conversion-kits

    Anyone prefer the mini starters?

I like them for more crank power on higher compression engines and solenoid isn't as close to headers. Also, since they are smaller, is easier to drop with headers in place and easier to install one handed while contorted on your back trying to get a bolt threaded, lol.
