    6.2 vacuum pod removal?

Okay to spin it. Yes, the pod can be removed separately. It's no big deal to pull the whole thing. There's no timing involved or anything like that.

Just an FYI, those are not the same as the factory step bumper.

    The last pre-emmisions diesel

What sound is that? Bucket of bolts down the intake or bearings falling out? It's definitely a legendary engine, and it's just my personal preference, but IMHO the automotive B-Series is about the worst sounding diesel on the planet.

305 SBC vs 6.2 Detroit: Which would you rather?

No, it's because the rider doesn't want to listen to them. They just want everybody else to listen to them.

    Broken main bolt

Usually that was for piston sizes. The factory had pistons sized in smaller increments than are used in rebuilding. Probably to make it easier to machine the blocks with more relaxed tolerances and make up the fit with the pistons.

305 SBC vs 6.2 Detroit: Which would you rather?

I wasn't critiquing your experience with bio. I have plenty of it myself, and while I'm an advocate of it, I recognize it's limitations. During the price spike back in ought-eight we had a lot of customers fiddling with it. One of the most prolific was a fish market that was getting used fryer...

Are these dual shocks factory. Pic inside. 1987 K10 long bed truck

Right. The factory quads used completely different shocks than the duals. Most aftermarket ones use the same shock as the singles and just add another one.

Are these dual shocks factory. Pic inside. 1987 K10 long bed truck

What's to understand? It was more common back then, but quad shocks were popular among the off-road crowd for more control. You don't have to keep it that way. You can revert to singles if the quads are too cool or too much damping for your purposes.

305 SBC vs 6.2 Detroit: Which would you rather?

I think the perspective on alternative fuels should also take disaster scenarios into account. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy we were without electric for a week and gas was hard to come by for longer than that. After the gasoline supply crashed Diesel was still relatively easy to find...

86 6.2 diesel crank no start

Ditto on Do NOT use starting fluid. Do you get smoke from the exhaust while cranking? Test the glowplugs with a test light. Pull the connector off and attach test light to battery positive. If it lights the plug is good. Test all of them. The glowplug light on the dash is powered by the glowplug...

    starter rebuilding - advice needed

Do you have access to a lathe? The most likely issue with slow cranking is bad commutator and/or brushes. I'd definitely want to turn the commutator for the new brushes. Otherwise I think you're on the right track. New solenoid and contact plate, bendix etc. Follow the manual and you should do okay.

    TH400 speedo driven gear issues

Changing the tooth count is going to change the ratio. Not the calibration. If you have the wrong gear your speed will be off by a percentage of MPH. Being 5 MPH off all the time means the speedometer head needs to be recalibrated. Usually they're correct if the needle is pointed at the little...

    Auxiliary trans oil cooler

It's not going to not work. It just won't be very effective. It's better than nothing, but if you're going to go to all the trouble why not put in a proper cooler and get all the benefits. I know. This one was free.

    Venture a guess…

I was kicking around the idea of getting that convoluted plastic wire loom and painting yellow stripes on it. Then forming it into a pair of loops to attach to the headrests of the car. However, headrests are too low and you'd just end up with them on the back of your head.

Trailer Hitch - Factory Step Bumper

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that if you stay below the ratings on the step bumper and use that bolt-on with a receiver hitch that raises the hitch ball to the same height that it would be on the step bumper you won't have issues with the bumper rolling. The step was designed...

    Dash Differences?

Diesels had a two-light insert between the speedo and the fuel gauge. AFAIK they all had an amber "Wait" or "Glow Plugs" light on one side (depending on vintage) and a red "Water In Fuel" light on the other, which in trucks up to about 1986 would also be illuminated by excessive vacuum on the...

14 bolt FF hub seal orientation

The lip with the garter spring should face towards the oil in the hub. That's the one that does the oil containment. The other, unsprung lip is to prevent contaminants from getting into the seal itself. Looking at your picture I believe that side faces into the hub, away from the differential.
