    Center/carrier bearing orientation - 76 C20 suburban

The way I remember the carrier bearing being on the '84 and the '90 Burbs, the dust cover was a metal part that threads onto the external threads on the driveshaft. The zerk/grease fitting is on that shaft, and that was something I hit every grease job.

    1977 C20 Heavy duty with 11.15 drums?

That drum does seem a bit small....my one ton has that rear axle but hydro boost instead of vacuum booster, and mine definitely has the 13" drums. Got a full floater out of a one ton square body in the shop, and I'm 99% sure it has the 13" too.

    New to the page

Yup my Dad woulda loved your two tone brown and cream 3+3, he always wanted one and that's the color combo our 77 and 79 Burbs were. He's probably looking down at me and shaking his head, seeing me and Mom with the OBS CCLB (I would have liked to have a square one but they're too expensive for...

Searching for My Dad's 1979 Chevy Suburban

The calipers on our R2500 (2wd) square body Burb had the 3/8" hex/Allen head bolts holding them on, just like the half ton Burbs. My one ton OBS Crew Cab has those bolts (same head anyway, bolt shaft is different). I haven't seen any GM truck calipers with Torx head bolts other than the NBS/GMT...

    Modified engine crewcab gas mileage?

3.73/4.10 rear end gearing, what makes that livable and driveable is the modern overdrive automatic. My OBS Burb gets off the line great with 3.42 and the first gear of the 4L60E. Big truck has a 4L80E and 4.10s, it's pretty snappy once the grunt gets to the rear wheels, back in the previous...

    Owners manuals for sale

Update: both 1977 owners manuals, the '77 Chevy truck accessories brochure, and the 1978 owners manual have been sold! I still have the '73 and '75 pickup owners manuals, plus several Chevy car ones from the '70s.

    Owners manuals for sale

I found some pictures from when I first found it.... My Dad's 75 Sierra Classic had those rails on it; he painted the recessed part, that's normally black, Willoway Green like the truck was(with white top and side coves). Our '81 Sierra shop truck had the GMC version of those wheelcovers...

    Vintage mag question

I personally wouldn't use it except for the spare... I'd be looking for another wheel like the other three. I know finding vintage aluminum mag wheels is not the easiest thing anymore....

    Owners manuals for sale

I finally got out to the shop building and I do still have both of the '77 owners manuals and the truck accessories brochure for that year. I could do a package deal on all three if you're interested....

    Modified engine crewcab gas mileage?

The skinny 16", load range E. 235/75-16? I called em pizza cutters. Once Dad and I got the front end fixed(new tie rods and sleeves, new lower ball joints, new pitman and idler arms) it drove a lot better.

    Chrome bumpers comparison ?

The other difficulty may be finding a good chrome plating shop? I have heard that many are being forced out of business because of the very toxic chemicals involved in the metal plating process.

    Chrome bumpers comparison ?

I have two later style square Burb rear bumpers, one with brackets too. Chrome is decent but they are OEM bumpers. The problem for us though, is shipping them from Houston, Texas to Connecticut....be more than they're worth.

    Bent fuel pump rod

Fuel pump on a square body era small block should be AC #40987 for two line(inlet and outlet) and #41216 for the 3 line(with vapor return line). Yes I sold a LOT of these, back in the day, to still remember the part numbers this many years later. Installed a few too, with 7 squares in the family...

    Modified engine crewcab gas mileage?

That was the one thing I didn't like about driving the '90 Burb on the road. No overdrive, just a turbo 400 behind a TBI 350, and 4.10 rear end. Originally ordered to haul a boat, and probably not real far.... It would max out at around 65 on the highway and it was screaming then. This was an...

    Loose timing chain replacement

This is tangentially related.... friend at work has a 2012 F150 with Ecoboost V6 twin turbo. His truck is throwing codes related to " camshafts out of sync" and other timing issues. Phord uses multiple long chains on these engines, with cam phasers and PLASTIC chain guides and keepers. I tease...

    Hydroboost - Hard Pedal

Interesting to know GM actually had a tech bulletin about this! My '97 C3500 had this happen after I had the hydro boost unit replaced. The replacement unit went bad and the installer didn't do the job correctly either...so this happened. Another shop got it fixed but it was a very interesting...

    80 sq body

Nice truck, love the vintage bullet hole wheels. If it's a 3/4 ton, how come the fender badge has a 10(1/2 ton) on it?

What have you done to your square lately??

Or leaking rear wheel cylinder/cylinders. Had that happen to my truck. If you leave it unfixed long enough the shoes will get contaminated linings and the brakes will grab. If the backing plate shows signs of dampness this is likely the issue.

    First major project vehicle!

Yup and the OBS Crew Cab has a 4" longer wheelbase than the square body one. My truck is 21'+++....made for the wide open spaces, not city driving! But it has AC and we live in Houston, Texas AKA swampland...so we use what is comfortable in the summer!

    13” drum brake parts

Have you tried Rock Auto? Or your local parts store? If you have someone at the parts store that is willing to do some searching through the catalogs, there may be parts for the later model one ton truck that will match or can be used. The GM full floating axle used 13" drum brakes for several...

    First major project vehicle!

Yup. Lack of parts interchangeability leads to parts price increase and eventually scarcity.
