    Gas smell

I had a similar problem, and they gas mostly went onto the exhaust manifold and burned off. Gas smell, but no visible gas residue. Just replace the pump and be done with it. They aren’t expensive, and not that hard to replace. The only challenge is to get the pump lever up under the rod...

    Heater Core question

There is one bolt that is very hard to reach because it’s down behind the edge of the inner fender. You can unbolt the inner fender to get space for a regular wrench, or some folks have used various universal joints to get in there. You will need an assistant when you bolt the housing back in...

Vacuum hose routing for brake booster

With a Quadrajet or Edelbrock 4 barrel there is a threaded port on the back of the carburetor base. From the factory there is a metal line (6” long?) threaded into that port and it runs back and over to near the brake booster. From there you have a short rubber line connected to the brake...

Vacuum lines where do they go

The identifying number will be something 17080213 for a newer Quadrajet carburetor, or 7045583 for an older Quadrajet (this is rhe number from my original 1975 carb). Your carburetor has been worked over by a brainless mechanic at some time. It’s missing pieces from the old hot air choke...

    Electrical Issues 1973 c10

Check the fusible link where the wire from the alternator connects to the power junction that is next to the brake booster. If you squeeze the wire you may find it is burned inside (it will easily compress), but you can’t really see the burned area on the outside.

    Black Fuse-like Electrical Connector?

It’s one of two fuses for the ammeter. The 2nd one is over on the other side of the engine compartment.

    shift indicator

It’s also common that the little plastic piece the wire slides on may have broken. It’s molded as part of the plastic cluster housing, so you have to replace the housing to fix it properly. Not real expensive from LMC, but it requires quite a bit of time to pull the cluster and swap everything...

Charcoal / vapor / evap canister, how it should be set up and other information

I have another question. When you look at the squarebody GM emissions stickers they all (I think) have a large two letter code at the top, like AM, XC, etc. I assume this code can be matched to a year, engine and vehicle combination, but I’ve never seen a table that listed the codes. Is...

Charcoal / vapor / evap canister, how it should be set up and other information

It collects vapor from the gas tanks and periodically vents it into the carburetor. In general, the venting is usually controlled by engine vacuum, but the exact setup ( canister with built in purge valve, separate purge valve, etc.) varies by year.

    350 water pump studs

I’m confused. What options don’t you have? Dorman or Help! branded parts are sold at almost all parts stores. If they don’t have them on hand, you can usually order them for free store delivery. The link I posted was for Amazon, and I don’t know anywhere in the US that they don’t deliver...

1976 C20 Burb: 3/4 ton fuel system and EVAP

I have the GM repair manuals for my truck, but they are not very specific about emissions equipment and what was included with each powertrain combination. I got my truck in about 2002 and it looked like the 350 engine was relatively unmolested; however, it had been in my wife’s family for...

    Smog thoughts

By ‘86 there were quite a few emissions controls, including the possibility of electric controls on the Quadrajet and maybe ESc spark control. It will not be simple.

1976 C20 Burb: 3/4 ton fuel system and EVAP

My truck has 8400 lb GVW, and therefore for 1975 it did not have catalytic converters. I am not sure what other controls were standard, but it’s a lot simpler than the lower GVW trucks. When I run the numbers on my original Quadrajet the book shows it as a California version. I don’t think...

1976 C20 Burb: 3/4 ton fuel system and EVAP

My ‘75 3/4 ton has HD emissions, and it includes a charcoal canister. The telltale sign is that there are three metal lines running from the gas tank switching valve up to the engine compartment. Two lines end on the frame rail right next to the fuel pump (supply and return), and the third...

Loud Knock After Replacing Intake Manifold

Use a mechanics stethoscope or a piece of tubing and listen at the valve cover over each cylinder. I used that method to find out an adjuster had loosened on one cylinder and I was hearing the pushrod clattering.

    350 water pump studs

IIRC, the original studs are fine thread on one end and coarse thread on the other end, and a short unthreaded section in the middle. Similar to these. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000CO779G/

Hyd roller with stock timing cover

I used a retrofit roller in my SBC, but also added a Cloyes two piece timing cover with an adjustable button. Stock steel timing covers apparently are not stiff enough to keep the cam button from moving out and allowing play. Stock one piece timing cover is also a PIA to get off on an SBC...

    factory temp gauge wire color

I have the factory gauge, but a ‘75 OEM gauge has no degree markings, just lines, and the original GM ‘75 sending units are no longer stocked. My current sending unit is the closest match I could get to the original. I added a mechanical gauge so I could cross-check and get the actual...

This makes 0 sense to me! Heater hose route

That setup in the last picture is how my ‘75 350 with TH350 is plumbed. Mine also has HD cooling (standard when you order A/C), so it uses a longer PS belt that goes around the both the crankshaft and water pump (dual groove pulley on water pump). If the alternator belt breaks, the PS belt...

What motor is best for a swap on a K25

Your first step is to determine a rough idea of your budget and time schedule, and then review your mechanical skills and tools. 2nd step is to describe how you plan to use the truck (daily drive, load hauler, off-road fun, etc.). Then post the answers here and you will get better input.

    Transfer case

From what I recall the CUCV’s came in different GVW/load ratings, so they may have used different transfer cases for the HD trucks. The M1008 (Blazer) definitely had higher gears and you could really tell the difference on the highway. Most of the pickups we used had 4:56 gears because they...

    2003 Acura MDX

Buying an older used vehicle at a good price is often based on the last repair estimate the owner got. They bring the car into a dealer or big repair shop and are told it will cost $4000 to fix it properly, and the car is worth about $3-4 tops. When you look at the repair estimate it is for...

    steering box bolts

Doesn’t the back side of the box have a small indent where the bolt goes through, and the spacer fills the indent and gives you a smooth, level surface to bolt onto the frame?

What is my new squarebody??? Need help!

When GM had the contract for CUCV tactile vehicles it was also comon to see GM trucks used for non-tactical work on posts and bases. Basically vehicles for local support activities. However, I always assumed they were standard GM vehicles that were purchased at a discount because of the big...
