Depends on what you are going to use it for and what kind of power you want. I first would think about the differential gearing. Your truck is not light, so I would stay away from super-tall gearing. It may increase mileage out on the open road, but it hurts acceleration. If you have a...
I once drove a 70 or so Nova with a 307, and that car FLEW, even with PG, much faster than a 73 or later 350, as tuned for best performance, not emissions, but you are right, they were not really cammed for high performance.
As her truck is 2WD, the front springs should be pretty soft for a truck. The rear springs, if you want a smooth ride, should be 4-leaf packs. If it has 7 leafs each, you need to swap them out for the 4 leaf packs. Also, use factory-spec tires, as they are fairly low pressure tires. That is...
Sounds like either bad rings or bad valve guides with missing seals. Maybe both. You can try one heat range hotter, that might do the trick until you rebuild the engine.

When you say "Sounds like a diesel", do you mean that it sounds like excessive clearance in the connecting rods? Loose piston pins? If the noise is right near the oil filter, I would check my connecting rods, starting with the rear-most rod. You could have one that overly large inserts for a...
Sounds like the trans is slipping. Does the vehicle speed increase with rising RPM with a feeling of no guts? If so, it might be running too lean. If the vehicle does NOT speed up with increasing RPM, its the trans.

It is the EPA doing that. They don't want people to keep vehicles that they feel are emitting more poisonous emissions, and scolding people hasn't worked the way they hoped it would, so they give tax credits to auto makers who make their vehicles impossible to fix. That way they will be junked...
I say if you have to have an LS, put a carb or carbs on it and a distributor on it. Electronics quickly become obsolete, then they soon quit making replacements. Carbs and distributors are easily rebuildable.

Today's world is so fed up. More and more, I am starting to look forward to the end of the world. I used to fear it. Maybe I am just getting too old!

Stuff from foreign countries is often off due to the fact that they measure in metrics, so they have to convert, which leaves room for errors. If you can find American or Canadian made, buy that instead, and screw the higher price.

That's just about the only way. You shouldn't leave them in, as they act sort of like a beaver dam and cause a big lump of scale to form around them, which causes a hot spot.

That is a crack. A score would be straight. You can have it sleeved, but first mike the other cylinders. If they are already at maximum oversize, you will have to decide if you want to sleeve all the cylinders. Not cheap, but 350s are becoming less than common, so think about it.
