1983 454 vs 5.3 LS for towing
Has anything been done to the 454 as far as upgrades? Mine has all the basic hot rod bolt-on's like carb, intake, headers and a small RV cam. There is far more power on tap and it never misses a beat. We don't rely on it as a primary but even in the heat it hasn't had any issues with getting...- Catbox

You could also pull the mirrors into the door for less drag. I would add a light weight set of wheels for drag night and leave the steelies for the street. Good looking truck.- Catbox

They used to say that 100 pounds equals a tenth. How much does the truck weigh? What can you pull off it when going to the strip? Spare tire? Tools? Hood? Bumpers? Tailgate? Change bench seat to lighter poly seats. These are all cheaper than a gear change. I bet that would get you closer to...- Catbox

350 motor no power
Have you checked / reset timing? Found all the vacuum leaks? Changed the main fuel filter and cleaned the little bronze ones at the carb if it has them?- Catbox

Yes. The TBI heads are all done at 4,000 rpm. There is no more to flow. So if you really want to get into it, swap the heads.- Catbox

Tbi crank no start
You need a new ignition module. I went though this with mine not that long ago. It would run off bottle feeding it. But no injector spray. New module and it fired right up. Now I also have a spare in the thing for just such occasions.- Catbox

Found some other random small tools at the Restore too. 8 inch clamp for clamping stuff... Yet another Milwaukee bag for Max. He now has several of them that he can leave in the most used walkways of the house.... He found me another flashlight and then dented it by being a hamfist... Old... -

I found this old timey gem at the Restore Donation center the other day. It was even on sale which made it even easier to purchase to put up on a shelf to never be used again. -

Are you going to use the sad sad TBI swirl port heads on the the 383? Upon looking at the end casting of the engine photo you have above, you are running a set of Vortec heads. Nice.- Catbox

Parts suppliers, apples to apples
It is sad for the local parts stores for sure. My then 18 year old son was working at our last true hold out speed parts store. He was the one that the other counter people would refer customers to when the vehicle was "old"... One customer asked for points and the other nerds just kinda had...- Catbox

Or stick with traditional small block and swap a L-31 Vortec engine into it with the carb. Just needs an electric fuel pump set up on it.- Catbox
