Old,doesn't mean bad New,doesn't mean works correctly.

The shop I referred to went bankrupt, basically because of poor management. Saw it coming and moved after 8 years to another shop. The other diagnostic tech did as well. After that they had parts 2 changers. At the time it was the largest shop by size in the area. About 20 stalls 2 parts...

Old,doesn't mean bad New,doesn't mean works correctly.

This problem isn't just owners tossing parts. A couple "techs" I worked with at another shop would go to pattern failures on Mitchell for whatever problem/code they were chasing. They would replace the part related to the most common failure. When that didn't work [many times it didn't] they...

    Head gasket Job

Yes, do need to verify where it is leaking first. Intake is more likely. However, do disagree on replacing the head gasket because your partially into it. I am from the school if it aint broke don't fix it. Overnight is fine on the silicone. That's all we do in a shop setting [if that], never...

    Vacume lines

Could be a lot of things, from coolant sensor to base plate gasket, fuel supply on and on. There are inexpensive adapters that will allow access to diagnostic information. TBI systems are fairly simple, but basic information is needed to pin down a proper repair. I am totally against removing...

    Need Help with Rear Brakes.

Go back to post 4. If fluid can't be pushed to the rear there is a restriction. Proceed from the front to the back breaking lines loose to find where fluid ends. Suggest doing it this way because occasionally gravity bleeding will not work.

    High temps

Really, factory gauges are indicators. Unless brakes are dragging causing the motor to work harder can't see a connection. If you want to know the actual temperature need to install a mechanical gauge. Also depends on where the sender is installed. If near the stat will be about 15-20 degrees...

    Need Help with Rear Brakes.

If the lines are clear verified with air from the master to rear cylinder bleeders either the master is bad or improper bleed procedure. Could try using a NEW pump oil can filled with brake fluid with a piece of hose attached to a line at master. See if any fluid can be pumped back there.

Running Hot at Highway Speeds with A/C On

Yes, bad radiator is a possibility. I suggested checking fan clutch first because it is very easy to do. I speak from personal experience on this one. 74 Elcamino bad fan clutch caused it to o-heat. New clutch, o-heating was no more. All I am saying is check it.

Running Hot at Highway Speeds with A/C On

Fan clutch and or radiator. Assume shroud is intact, fan blades are partially protruding from the rear. Could also add a fan with more blades or HD fan clutch. First item to check is fan clutch, that's easy.

Idle Mixture Screws Do Not Adjust Anything on 1974 454.

Unfortunately, you're probably right. Business costs to cover defective part warranties has to be huge. Some brands are so bad even if it is the only one available, we won't install it.

    Fluid Changes

Yes, check oil condition in the axles and change if needed. If it's been a while or you don't know the history a good idea to look inside for metal pieces. I have caught many diffs [that weren't noisy] before complete failure by pulling covers.

    Blinkers are acting up

alternate? one side goes out and the other side lights? Sounds like a ground issue. Another problem that will absolutely drive a person nuts is a broken filament inside a bulb that drops down on the other filament.

    Newbie needing help

Does sound like a choke issue. When completely cold does the choke plate close? That is the butterfly on front venturi. Butterfly should be just closed when cold and open slightly after starting.

    A/C but no heat

are heater hoses hot, temperature difference between the 2? Temp split around 20-25 degrees indicates a plugged core, no or low flow. Check after warm and heater has been operating. When coolant was added did you bleed air out?

    roof rust "paint?"

Thought about Por 15 as well but I think removing it later on for finishing might be a problem. That stuff is like iron when dry. How much of the vehicle is rusty? It might save you a lot of time to prepare it properly now rather than undoing a seal coat. Does anyone in your area do slurry...

    Fuel pump pressure problem?

Pump has a vent hole in top housing. Fuel there indicates an internal diaphragm failure. Many new defective pumps. ONLY buy Delphi, GM or Delco. Any other brand is hit and miss. Also, good idea to run only ethanol free fuel. Multiple reasons for doing so.

    Idle Emissions Help

When performing diagnostics the air pump hoses should be clamped off. If those readings are with a functioning AP system, engine is much richer than I first thought. When you say as lean as possible how is it being adjusted? Emissions are usually lowest when mixture screws are a 1/4 turn in...

    Idle Emissions Help

Rule of thumb, high CO is rich. high HC is anything other than fuel from engine condition to a misfire. Usually, HC will be low with high CO but not always. I know this sounds clear as mud. If this vehicle was in my shop and a quick adjustment would try to lean out the idle screws and watch the...
