    Torque Converter Recommendation

Order a replacement remanufactured converter for the Suburban or similar heavy vehicle. Assuming the engine is stock other than headers a stock converter should work well.

    Rpo codes

There are a bunch of RPO codes. I found this recently while searching my $100 beater 97 Lesabre. https://rparts-sites.s3.amazonaws.com/dec399b0838336997484042ed2af1004/design/rpoCodes.pdf

    Right blinker acting weird

When I doubt, check the grounds. Check the bulb, make sure it’s the correct bulb. Make sure the socket is clean, add a little bulb grease to keep corrosion away.

    Reverse lights don't turn on.

More than likely the neutral safety switch needs a little adjustment. Before adjusting it, make sure all the plastic and rubber insulators and bushings are in place and good condition.

That’s how you fix the lousy valve shrouding from the small bore. You carry your own atmosphere!!

Trying to determine what converter I’ll need

Call your converter company of choice. Have as much info on the vehicle and engine as possible, the more info you have, the better job they can do selecting the right pump/stator/turbine combination to match. Don’t panic if they tell you a much higher stall speed than you think you need...

Side markers turn on when pressing brakes

Push and pull the hazard switch knob several times, see if that does anything for your market light issue. Sometimes that “fixes” quirky tail/brake/ marker light operation. If you are positive all the bulbs are correct, the sockets are clean and making good contact, and all the grounds are...

91 Suburban Rear Speaker - Which Ohm?

We replaced all the factory speakers in my sons 91 Yukon with aftermarket speakers. We also sent the factory radio off for repair (3 times!) each time it came back with a different issue. Don’t use M&R electronics in Michigan for your delco radio repair!! The radio itself seems ok, they just...

    truck runs hot

Make sure all the rubber fillers and plastic shrouding is in place around the radiator. Any air that enters the grill needs to exit thru the radiator. Air will take the path of least resistance, if it’s easier to go around the radiator than thru it that’s exactly what it will do. Fill any...

    1983 454 vs 5.3 LS for towing

If you are towing, go big block all the way. The lamest 454 will have more off idle torque than any stock 5.3 LS. As for the 700, run it until it gives you trouble. Hopefully the shop that did the build included some durability upgrades. Specifically, an upgraded 3-4 clutch pack, and some...

    1977 C10 Silverado 350/T350 - reverse issue

Pour an extra quart of fluid in. If that solves the issue, drop the pan and verify the full mark is even with the pan rail.

TH350 5 neutrals (delayed shifting/won't go into gear)

Gear command is TransGo speak for manual/auto valve body. Put the shifter in drive, it will shift normally. Put the shifter in 1st, is going into first regardless of vehicle speed. Start out in first, thr trans will stay on first until you move the shifter, or you drive over the crankshaft...

TH350 5 neutrals (delayed shifting/won't go into gear)

Be conservative on the hole size. It’s easy to make it bigger. Can’t make the hole smaller. And if the accumulator piston in the valve body is plastic, replace it with an old school aluminum piston. If it hasn’t broken yet, it will when you compress it to remove the e clip. The fact that you...

TH350 5 neutrals (delayed shifting/won't go into gear)

Piece of copper tubing in place of the spring is what I use. Pull the valve, remove the spring, put a piece of tubing in place, reinstall the valve and you’re done. If the roll pin won’t fit, take a punch and LIGHTLY tap the valve to compress the copper tubing until the roll pin just fits...

TH350 5 neutrals (delayed shifting/won't go into gear)

That transmission has had some water in it at one time. That’s what valve body gaskets look like after soaking in a ATF/water bath for a while. The B&M kit severely restricts accumulator function, and is a little more aggressive with spacer plate drill sizes. I actually prefer the B&M kit IF...

TH350 5 neutrals (delayed shifting/won't go into gear)

Before putting the pan on, verify the dipstick is correct. The full mark should be even with the pail rail.

Either crank the engine long enough to fill the carb, or put a little fuel down the carb vent to fill the bowl.

    The old 700R4 questions!

Finally, someone with a clue. The 700 trans came out in 1982. You have to understand the way GM was run in those days. All the real car guys had either left or were on their way out, and were replaced by bean counters. Unfortunately, GM engineers were more concerned with meeting emissions and...

    The old 700R4 questions!

You have 4th gear without the wiring. What you don’t have is a locking torque converter. Use a continuity tester to determine if the pressure switch is normally open or closed. TCI, Painless wiring, all make lockup kits of if you don’t want to make your own. bow tie overdrive makes a really...

    4L60 limitations

Just to clarify: a 4L65E has 6 clutches in the 3-4 clutch pack. The 4L70e has 7 clutches, planetary gears with 5 pinions instead of the usable 4, and the updated dual cage input sprag. If you install the 5 pinion planetary gears, make sure you are buying GM stuff or qualify parts. I did a...

    Overdrive not working

That’s about all the movement you will see. If you still have the old solenoid, drive a bb or something similar in the end of the solenoid. Reinstall the solenoid, filter, pan, fluid, etc. With the solenoid blocked with a bb the converter should be locked, as soon as it shifts to second gear.

    Overdrive not working

The TCC valve is directly above the solenoid. Have you air tested the solenoid? If you apply air to the end of the solenoid, air should vent. Apply power the the solenoid, the vent should close.

It’s been years since I bought a Airtex pump. It would not surprise me to learn they are outsourced and junk today.

    Fuel Pump?

The problem with an American made A/C Delco pump is it will have been made long before the rubber parts were made with ethanol compatible components. Not to mention A/C Delco today is a not the same as A/C Delco of 30 years ago. I’m a believer in keeping your “GM vehicle all GM” but it’s not...
