Speedometer cable service - how to

I have in my tool box a speedo cable lube tool. Hooks to a drill and you spin it at the transmission end. It lubricates the cable and works pretty good. Back in the day this was something you did regularly so this tool paid for itself. Charge an hour to lube it and do it in a few minutes...

    Compressor not turning on.

@Grit dog Thankfully I do not live in either of those states. I assume you can buy R134a but you need a license to do so. Is this the case? Just get your EPA 609 certification. Not hard to pass the open book test. Pay the fee and you should be good to go. From what I read when Googling, you can...

    Bad alternator bearings

You can take the alternator to one of the big box parts stores. They have testers that spin the alternator and check for output. In your case have them spin it. If it squeals you know you found the culprit, if it doesn't move onto something else. My money is on something else. Bearings usually...

    Bad alternator bearings

That doesn't sound like a bearing noise. I have seen the ring spin on harmonic balancer causing a belt squeal noise. Original alternator and replacement make the exact same noise......chances are extremely small but not zero. I would look for another cause.

    Compressor not turning on.

Before you go crazy guessing and replacing parts you need to know if your system has enough pressure to turn on the compressor. On the accumulator is the pressure switch. It opens at low pressure. Unplug the switch, it has a light green and dark green wires. Take your ohmmeter and see if there...

    Reproduction Turn Signal Lever?

Like I said, LMC is hit or miss. I wish they had a review for each part so you can read the comments. I bought some repro handles off Amazon. They look good next to my pitted originals but I have not tried them in a door yet. If they are crap I will hunt down some NOS ones and pay the premium.

    Reproduction Turn Signal Lever?

Why buy a repro when you can get a GM part? Part number 3990866. There are several on eBay for a decent price. I am not super happy with LMC. They don't tell you when something is completely different than you expect. I bought tank insulators for my fuel tanks and they sent me scraps of...

    454 shake and noise troubleshooting

@Ricko1966 I see this daily in my job. Young techs are lost if the scan tool does not tell them what to do. These guy can't diagnose anything on their own. Yes, I am generalizing but it is a rare younger tech that understands what he is doing. I think a lot of this stems from kids no longer...

    454 shake and noise troubleshooting

I am in dealers all the time. Older cars are like a mystery to them. Finding someone that knows anything about these older vehicle is tough. Most are retired or dead. Young kids don't understand the basics. Independent repair shops have to find their specialty. If you only do old vehicles you...

whats every body using.. looking for a new stereo head unit

I liked the idea of a factory Delco unit. All I really care about is listening to stuff from my phone. The unit @j69shep modified to add Bluetooth is what I went with. Now just need to get to the point in my restoration where I need to install it.

    454 shake and noise troubleshooting

I am sure they screwed it up intentionally. Shops do this because they love when customers come in all angry and upset. Much more fun to argue than to make money. :p The oil should have been changed as part of the job. The old gasket material, coolant and cleaning debris ends up in the pan. I...

I was going to redo my vent windows myself. I even bought the repair kits. I am running out of time and want to finish my truck this summer. I sent them off to Precision to have them redone. They called today and they are on their way back to me.

    04 Suburban oil pan, whew

It is a shame that you or the previous owner let it sludge up. If you had used a quality oil and changed it regularly it would not have so much sludge. My 1987 has been in my family since 1988 and has well over 200,000 miles on it. Does not smoke and engine only has a slight yellowish film on...
