1987 V10 with 1974 engine- need TBI Help

As a first step, I’d troubleshoot the lack of SES light. Then see if you have codes. If not, I’d look into winaldl and a cable. I think moates has the stuff you need. The place I got my cable from for the droid app is no longer around (1320 electronics)

1987 V10 with 1974 engine- need TBI Help

The tbi is all metal…so aside from sensors and injectors and gaskets, it should be rebuildable. There is a diagnostic for “no SES” light in the drivability manual. If you jumper AB with key on, it will flash 12s and then any codes followed by 12s, all 3 times each. It will also force the IAC...

1987 V10 with 1974 engine- need TBI Help

For something like idle surging, you really need to be able to see what the ECM is doing with fueling in response to the other sensors. My guess is it is something related to O2 feedback in closed loop. Could be restricted exhaust, could be O2 sensor going bad/lazy, or any number of things...

    350 TBI high idle

So if you unplug the cable, it doesn’t do it? I have never noticed anything different with my Bluetooth cable connected to my ALDL. Maybe your cable is a little different and has something that is forcing it into a diagnostic mode or something? Check the baud rate. I thought tbi was very...

    350 TBI high idle

check the flag data? I use adldroid, so am not familiar with winaldl.

    350 TBI high idle

does the TPS show you are back at idle? There is an “idle/off idle” indicator the ECM reports out. Does it show you are at “idle” when it does this? If the IAC isn’t closing to control idle speed, it is probably not an issue with a vacuum hose or a leak.

4L60/700r4 delayed engagement in cold weather

Thanks for the info @NickTransmissions. In the mean time, is it better to let it take its time getting into D or should I immediately shift to 2nd to get a quicker engagement?

4L60/700r4 delayed engagement in cold weather

@NickTransmissions any more thoughts? anytime the transmission isn't pretty warm from driving, I can almost feel the slow engagement....it just kind of slips during the engagement. once engaged, everyhing is good. if the transmission is warm from driving, it engages pretty quickly. R and 1 or...

    Check engine light

total guessing here based on almost no information, but maybe the knock sensor is failing the self test. pull the codes and provide some more info.

    intermittent code 42

Pretty sure the ECM needs to see the RPM data and the high reference signal from the ICM for the fueling to work? Not sure you can mix the mechanical distributor and TBI fueling. And even if you could, it would always have code 42 bc of the lack of information:)

    intermittent code 42

I would spray around the distributor cap and external coil with soapy water mist to see if you hear any cracking or popping from electricity. Also make sure the plug wires are not touching any of the ECM or sensor harnesses. Most code 42s I have had have been traced back to electrical...

    Overheat AC issue

my tbi opens up the IAC when the AC is on to help with the increases engine load. might check on whatever comparable system you have?

    Shut Down

shuts off instantly seems more like ignition than sputtering from lack of fuel to me? might spray some soapy water around the distributor cap while it is idling and coil see if there is some electricity leaking out and zapping something ECM related. listen for crackling or watch for blue sparks.

    Shut Down

any codes? does it sputter out or cut out instantly?

    No power at highway speeds

brake booster and the vacuum feed that splits off into the AC, cruise, reservoir are the main ones. other possible locations are EGR, MAP, fuel cannister. manipulate the vacuum hoses after you have turned off the engine. the reservoir should hold some vacuum and you will hear it releasing.
  17. G

    No power at highway speeds

if it ran great before ICM and then had this problem after, i bet a vacuum hose came off or got torn when he was messing with the distributor...a lot of vacuum hoses for cruise, ac, booster, etc all on that area. was the ac fan stopping or was the air being redirected to the floor vents?

    Trans Fluid and Filter Replacement

uh....no. they don't need to be much more than hand tight....
  19. G

    No power at highway speeds

sounds like a vacuum leak at the reservoir or the cruise control vacuum hoses or the cruise control solenoid itself or somewhere in the plumbing of vacuum hoses. that vacuum leak will also cause you to have less power at highway speed when engine vacuum is overall lower already and the vacuum...

    ECU & PROM Identification

If you are monitoring data in winaldl, what are the BLM and INT numbers? That is the actual fuel trims. There is a rich/lean flag that should vary from rich to lean as the computer adjusts as fast as it can based on O2 feedback. Just failing emissions isn’t enough to throw a code. If it is...

    ECU & PROM Identification

Is there a sticker anywhere behind the glove box that also has the original PROM code on it? Not 100% sure, but seems like I remember that on my 90 burb. But I agree with above, sounds like the computer is probably right. If you are running rich, is the ECM pulling fuel (as evidenced by the...

    Trans Fluid and Filter Replacement

The filter gasket does like to stay in the transmission. I have had good luck using a very small flathead screwdriver or a pick to slip in between the gasket and the transmission and deforming the gasket to the inside. Then it drops out easily.

    Trans Fluid and Filter Replacement

Do a pan drop, filter change, and install a pan with a drain plug. Then do a drain and fill at the next two oil changes or even each week for 2 weeks would be fine. From there on out, do a drain and fill at an oil change every 6 months or so. Might drop the pan and replace the filter every...

1988 Crew Cab 454 TBI Knock

If it is top and under a valve cover, pull the cover and see what you see. Can also run the engine with the cover off and see if the rockers are all moving properly.

1988 Crew Cab 454 TBI Knock

I’d try and figure out where the noise is coming from first. Driver, passenger, top, bottom, etc.
