    Replacing The Quadrajet

    Fix the Q-Jet!!

Nobody warned me about the MPGs on these square bodies!

Same here. My 06 2500 4x4 mega cab auto with 3.73 will occasionally hit 18 mpg. The best I have EVER gotten was 608 miles on a tank. The tuner I have in the pcm does help, both power and economy. On a more humorous note, the overhead console has never been very accurate, with the tuner loaded...

    Courtesy light, cigarette sockets

Painless is anything but painless!! Unless they have made drastic improvements to their harnesses, you are expected to cut and splice a lot of your existing connector bodies to the replacement harness. Which in my opinion defeats the biggest advantage of replacing an existing harness. What...

    Help identifying these two things

The box is definitely cruise control, as is the mystery plug. The plug goes to the brake switch. The cruise on these trucks is completely independent of the ecm/carb other than the VSS. So if you want cruise control, you need those components plugged in and functional.

    high beams not working

The fact that the high beam indicator doesn’t always work leads me the think the issue is the dimmer switch. Once the column is dropped, it’s fairly easy to get to

    Tail lights, turn signals.

Check for power at the white wire at the turnsignal switch while pushing the brake pedal. If you have power, check the green and yellow wire while pushing the brake. If you have power there, move on. Find the tail light connector on the engine side of the firewall connector. Once again, push...

Are these modern carburetors a big improvement?

Yep, I have taken apart lots of cores with the float hanger clip in the wrong place. Or the metering rod hangers mangled. 20 years ago, I could almost understand how mistakes like that could be made. Now, reassemble instructions AND video is no further than YouTube. I’m pretty comfortable...

    Summit bolt on exhaust system?

I’m glad to hear, I was kinda leaning towards the Hooker system. I’m hoping to be able to install this myself. When I installed the 700 trans, I had to move the crossmember back. Now the pass side exhaust pipe is sitting hard on the crossmember, everything rattles and vibrates now. I have a...

Are these modern carburetors a big improvement?

In my opinion, no. It’s hard to beat a well tuned Q-Jet. The Q-Jet is very sensitive, and versatile, but it takes someone with experience and patience to set it up right. You can’t take a Q-Jet calibrated for a 305 and bolt it on a rowdy 454 (or vice versa) and expect it to run well. The other...

    Summit bolt on exhaust system?

Anyone tried one? I’m looking for a header back system for my 81 long bed. I’m already anticipating some fabrication work due to the 455 Olds swap. Not likely to find a true bolt on system for that!! I’m considering this one: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/hok-16526hkr Or this...

    Where do these wires go?

Orange is also the kickdown solenoid on the TH400 trucks.

    Vacuum lines for hvac system

Crap, I think you are right!! I was going by memory, and they say as you get older, memory is the first thing to go. You know what they say about memory, it’s the first thing to go. Anybody remember what the saying about memory and getting older?? What were we discussing??

    Vacuum lines for hvac system

Look next to the heater case. There is a grommet I’m pretty sure the A/C harness and vacuum lines come out of this grommet.

Do throttle body or carb spacers actually help?

Carb spacers can help. I doubt you would feel anything with a throttle body spacer, especially with a TBI engine. Those are very airflow restricted, there just isn’t much room for improvement.

    Led headlight mod

I REALLY don’t want to be “that guy”, but I don’t have any issues driving with primative halogen bulbs. I don’t see the need or fascination with headlights bright enough to melt your retina. While I’m not nearly old enough to require soaking my dentures in carb cleaner, I’m definitely not 20...

    Vacuum lines for hvac system

Does the truck still have the emission label under the hood? There should be a pink and purple hose. One is the vacuum supply line, it goes to the vacuum check valve and vacuum storage tank. The other goes to the heater control valve, when the heater temp is set to max cold or max A/C, the...

    quadrajet heat soak

Does your fuel pump have 3 ports? One is a feed (from the tank) one is the supply (to the carb) and the 3rd is a return. The return line has a tiny orifice, that provides a carefuy calculated internal leak that constantly circulates fuel to keep the pump cool, and to provide a vent to relive...

    What 700R4 Governor or Setup:

I had the exact opposite issue with my 700 swap. The core trans I used came from a 91 9C1 cop car. While it had the planetary gearset with the oil baffles and some other factory performance stuff, it didn’t like the 3.08 gears the truck had. The governor the 9C1 trans used had windows cut out of...

    Wiper delay modules?

I don’t know anyone with a 78-83 truck with delay. I’m guessing those aren’t very common.

    Wiper delay modules?

I’m pretty sure these are wiper delay modules. If so, anyone in readerland know of a way to test them? I reasonably sure they are good, or I wouldn’t have kept them.

    Unusual radio issue

Im not an electronics genius, but I would think a resistor on the radio power feed to ground would drag the voltage down enough to to shut it off. Maybe a 500ohm 1/2 watt resistor? I’m sure there is an electrical formula to calculate exactly what is needed. As a matter of fact, that’s kinda...

    1988 R20 2WD TH 400 to 4WD

I’d agree, it will take longer to clean everything than to swap the shafts. Watch some YouTube videos, work slowly and cleanly, don’t force anything. feel free to ask questions.

Is this a TH350 & which flex plate???

Watch some YouTube videos. Get a small tub of Vasoline, put it in the fridge before starting the valve body install. You will use the vasoline to “glue” the check balls in place. DO NOT use wheel bearing grease, it won’t dissolve in ATF. Work slowly, cleanly, don’t force anything. The biggest...

Any Reason Not to Modify an Accel Coil?

I know for a fact you can fit the accel coil under the stock AC Delco HEI coil cover. Years ago I had that same coil on a car, for whatever reason the vaccum advance would only fit with the distributor “upside” down.
