    Rotate 350 «backwards»

Take off the outermost belt on the crankshaft pulley, and use a rubber strap wrench to turn the pulley. It gives you good leverage from the diameter of the pulley combined with the handle on the wrench. The set I have has three sizes of strap wrench, and they are very useful. The rubber...

    AC Condenser Question

I used an aftermarket parallel flow condenser when I converted my A/C, and in hindsight I’m not sure it was really needed. The stock condenser is quite large and the cab of the truck is quite small, so I think it would have been fine with a stock condenser that was in good shape. YMMV Just...

    Dreaded radiator sizes

AFAIK, the height listed in the specs is measured as the height of the core (only the finned area). I bought a Champion all aluminum radiator from Jegs for my ‘75 GMC with 350 and it works really well. I also have the factory shroud, metal bladed fan, and a severe duty fan clutch. It keeps...

    Dreaded radiator sizes

I have had some success with going to the Rockauto or LMC web sites and looking at the radiator options and sizes for the year of the truck. Based on that you may be able to determine the size you need/want. In some years there were different height/width dimensions offered, and in all years...

Engine cranks but doesn’t start. I believe it’s my timing in my distributor.

If you did not loosen the hold down bolt and rotate the distributor, the timing should not have changed. This assumes you got the wires back on the right terminals. As already mentioned, it may just be flooded with gas and need to turn over with the throttle and choke wide open (accelerator...

    New issue

The only reason I can think of for breaking one of those bolts is if someone was installing the engine and tried to use the bolts to draw the assembly together and get motor mounts to line up.

Why The 180's in Fuel and Return Lines

On my '75 SBC the fuel line from the tank turns about 180 degrees, and the fuel return line only turns about 90 degrees. This puts the ends right in line for short hoses to the mechanical fuel pump.

    New issue

Are you talking about the bell housing bolt that holds the tube? If all the other bell housing bolts are tight it might not cause any problem, since it’s just a mechanical connection ;to the engine (no seal to keep in place).

    Quick questions on charging system.

You will need to provide more information about exactly what you have, since it sounds like you may have parts from two different years. To start: 1. Was it using R12/freon, or has ir been converted to R134a? 2. Take a picture of the compressor. It sounds like an R4. 3. If converted, what...

NO power when key is in acc or on position

Since you have power for lights, the fusible links are probably good. Power from the key switch to the ignition is a little more convoluted to explain. Turning ther key mechanism moves a rack inside the column, which then pulls a rod up and down the column, and that rod operates the...

    Intake manifold and stripped bolt

Also remember that the last two holes in the back are fixed length holes, so the bolt has to be the correct length to get a good seal. If the bolt is too long it will bottom out before pulling the intake down enough get a good seal. Very misleading since it will seem to torque down properly...

    Distributor Wiring

The standard HEI power connector (many aftermarket places sell replacements) has only one wire. However, if you had ESC maybe it had another powered device.

    Distributor Wiring

IIRC, the terminals on many distributor caps are marked/ embossed with something like BAT and TACH. All you need is 12 volts ignition-switched to the BAT terminal.

Optimal engine temperature for max HP?

Don't get engine temp confused with air temp into the intake. You want air temps as low as possible to get a denser "charge" of fuel and air, but modern engines perform and last better when they run in the 200 to about 230 degree temperature range. However, most folks don't go any higher...

Steering Wheel Too Close '84 C-10

I’ve also seen some seat relocation brackets, but I’m not sure how they work. My seatback is almost touching the back of the cab, so there isn’t much space to move it back.

    1973 Tailgate Trim Band Replacement

No, the narrow tailgate band went well beyond ‘73 (my ‘75 has the narrow band).

84 Chevy 305 stock; what to swap with?

Determine your power goal and budget first. Basic 350 or 305 build (cam, intake, carburetor, headers and exhaust) is relatively cheap if you shop around, but you have to also add in the cost of the 350 engine if you go that route. The next step up in HP requires better heads (stock smog heads...

Steering Wheel Too Close '84 C-10

Is your seat relatively new? I recently replaced the seat foam and seat cover on my ‘75 GMC, and the steering wheel clearance is now really tight (I’m only about 5’8” and 185 lbs). I’ve tilted the steering wheel up some and that helps, but that brand new foam is much different than the old...

327 coughs and dies during gearchange.

There is a large diameter vacuum hose (3/8”?) from the intake to the brake booster, so a booster failure could cause a big vacuum leak. However, I don’t know why it would be tied to the shift into second, unless it’s just a factor of more engine load at that speed.

    1973 Tailgate Trim Band Replacement

The ‘73 tailgate and band is a completely different shape than later years. The tailgate has an inset in the middle, and the narrow band fits into the inset. The band does not extend anywhere near the end or top/bottom of the tailgate, since the inset tapers in from birth the top and the...

    Quadrajet Secondary issue?

Since your csrb may not be original, one of the first things to document is the model number of your Quadrajet, which is embossed on one side. Older carbs like yours probably have a 7 digit number like 7045583, and newer model use a longer number like 17080213. You need that number to ensure...

77 C10 HVAC vacuum line replacement through firewall

They sell packages of GM hard vacuum line at most auto parts stores. There are two sizes (diameters), but I don’t recall which is the best match to original. Dorman part numbers 47419 3/16” and 47417 1/8”.

77 C10 HVAC vacuum line replacement through firewall

The line through the firewall is GM hard plastic vacuum line, and it’s just pushed through a rubber grommet. If you take the glove compartment door off you can see where it comes through and then runs over to the back of the dash controls. If it is broken you can buy new hard plastic line...

    Quadrajet Secondary issue?

Secondaries rely on air flow and vacuum changes to open up, so you are not even close to the point where they take effect. You checked your accelerator pump and it apparently works. However ethanol fuel does screw up the pump seal, and newer pumps use different seal material to fix that...
