Yeah, I only went this route on the uppers cuz the ball joints came with the truck. I told myself that if today I didn’t get the uppers done I was buying an upper arm tomorrow and moving on. Just didn’t want to spend the extra $150. I REALLY wish they made loaded lower arms for these K1500s...

Upper ball joint finally in!!! Universe finally let me make progress on that fourth hole Now waiting on batteries to charge so I can do one more round of drilling on 3 of the 4 holes for the lower ball joints! Fingers crossed that the ball joint slips out after the last round of drilling. As...

    Huck's daily - 2005 Z71 crewcab

Coming out really nice! Every time I catch myself up with this thread, my brain goes back to the OG GMFS days where it was like a competition for who could have the cleanest NBS on the site. Everyone polishing, detailing. colormatching. debadging and coming back on a Monday to show what they...

***raises hand to let the group know he's a ding bat*** :happy175: I can't help but try and go fast cuz my brain says "LET'S DO THIS AND DRILL THIS MFER OUT!!!!!" ........ Doesn't work but that my natural tendancy every......single.....time ::Boo: I DO try to keep them cool, though. So maybe...

    Old77’s GMT400 SWB 4x4 5-speed project/DD

Very good info! Thank you, Spencer! I'll definitely check it out regardless of the outcome of this project. I don't normally do a lot of drilling but when I do I constantly fight it because my drill bits are garbage and don't stay sharp for very long no matter what kind or how much cutting fluid...

https://www.lowes.com/pd/DEWALT-14-Piece-Cobalt-Twist-Drill-Bit/50413714 yeah, @animal must be off his game  It really is the weirdest thing. I've done ball joints like this numerous times and in the past I've always gotten it to the point that I could just punch it out and have NEVER...

    Old77’s GMT400 SWB 4x4 5-speed project/DD

I'm thinking I'll have it handled by the end of night tonight after a few more hours of work. I'll finish up the lower ball joint as it's not far from being done and then attack that upper again. The only reason I'm even fighting this upper ball joint rather than buying a whole new arm with new...

    Old77’s GMT400 SWB 4x4 5-speed project/DD

Yesterday I got some Dewalt Carbide bits and they worked pretty well in the lower ball joints. Or at least better than my other bits were. I could definitely stand to have an actual good set of drill bits. I think that definitely bit me in the beginning. And I might have to go down the Carbide...

Worked another 4 hours on them today. The upper is all but ready to install with the exception of one hole. It will NOT drill  So it continues to hang out there and I attacked the lower ball joint. I got all 4 drilled through so just a little more work and that lower ball joint will be...

Manual slider but seems like a pretty nice unit. I’m happy with it :) Yes, it completely sucks! I was very surprised when I learned that they don’t sell lowers filled with new ball joints and bushings. At that point, I just resigned myself to the fact I was in it for the long haul. And I’d...

Rear window installed Ball joints on the other hand….. :flipthebird: Have about 4 hours into it at this point and still have the lower to do

Something like that  I’m actually going to cut it, tap with body hammer and such to the shape it as needed, weld it and grind it and that should bring it back around decently. It just won’t be today or this weekend :) Oh and @89Suburban can lick a salty d|ck

    Old77’s GMT400 SWB 4x4 5-speed project/DD

Well, here she is for now. Overall, I’m very happy with the results. I didn’t realize until I started fitting up the patch piece that there was also a dent in the body line. So I had to draw a line and leave things for “next time”. There’s also a small dent down below the body line that I knew...

Before lunch I went and scrapped the bed. 300 lbs of metal got me $13.37 :hmm: how do people make anything scrapping metal??? I spent more on gasoline to get there lol Also, got the patch mostly in before lunch. I had to cut a slit in it to make the door gap better (you know, cuz show truck...

As minor as that is, that thought has entered my mind for that small spot. If this corner wasn’t so major, that coulda been done there, too, but it was way too far gone to consider that as a fix in my mind :)

    Old77’s GMT400 SWB 4x4 5-speed project/DD

:slap: yep…..one thing at a time, fella. That’s far less involved than this deal. For a non-professional like myself, this is a skill stretcher! that other area above the window will be much simpler to repair.

    Old77’s GMT400 SWB 4x4 5-speed project/DD

Hole is about 85% ready for the patch piece. Just some fine tuning on both the patch and the hole before I’m ready to start tacking and final fitting. Took tomorrow off work. First thing I’m taking the old bed to the scrap metal spot then the rest of the day will be devoted to this corner...

    Old77’s GMT400 SWB 4x4 5-speed project/DD

This is essentially exactly what I had in mind after taking some time to think it through and YouTube research to determine what others have done :) Once I get this done I can fine tune my hole on the cab and start properly fitting my patch in. Fingers crossed that I might be able to start...

    Old77’s GMT400 SWB 4x4 5-speed project/DD

For the spot weld removal, I think I’m just going to go real slow with a combination of drill bit and grinder and try to remove the spot welds without damaging my patch panel. I may hit that up over my lunch break tomorrow :hmm:
  23. Old77

    Old77’s GMT400 SWB 4x4 5-speed project/DD

The goal for the patch is for it wrap around into the window channel and over into the door jam to minimize the bodywork I have to do. I’m hoping to just need to do a little body work at the top near the cab seam and the at the bottom near the body line  Let me know if any of y’all...

    Old77’s GMT400 SWB 4x4 5-speed project/DD

THEN I started cutting into the cab! There musta been a hole in this corner and they just filled the hole with bubble gum welds  Good news is the original seat belt structure is not spot welded on the 92 so I just to be careful to remove the skin and paying attention not to dig too...

    Old77’s GMT400 SWB 4x4 5-speed project/DD

Started round 1 of cutting tonight. Got my patch piece cut from my donor piece There’s an inner structure that is spot welded in that was reinforcement for the seat belt. This patch obviously game from a later gmt400. So now I need to figure out to cut the spot welds out without ruining my...
