    Harbor Freight Table and carts

I looked at that HF workbench when it was on sale, but found it to be very flimsy. However, nicer ones from Husky and Gladiator are a LOT more expensive. My main workbench is a 28"x80" solid core door bolted on to kitchen base cabinets. There's a 4.5" vise on one corner, and I can pound the...

    Bvllsh!t on craigslist.

Well, I have one. But if I tired to sell it for that much, it would probably still be in a cabinet in my shop when I pass on to Hot Rodder Heaven!

    Bvllsh!t on craigslist.

I was looking to see what a fair price is for an NOS steering column seal, and found this. Re-pops sell for $15-$25 all over the internet. Talk about an insane price for an NOS part! I mean it's not like a fender, trim, or some rare accessory. I think I might offer him $25.

    LED Shop Lights That Last??

I've had good service from name brand 2x48" LED bulbs from Lowe's and/or Home Depot. Typically they are GE are Phillips. By good service I mean I can't remember replacing any of them, unlike the old 32-watt and 40-watt florescent bulbs. My current garage and shop have native 2x48" LED...

    250i6 mods for Highway Driving

My very basic 82 C10 SWB with a 250-six and 3-speed manual trans came with a 2.73 axle ratio. The standard FR78-15 tires were 27.6" tall. I eventually went the 350/TH350 route which worked fine with the 2.73 and 29.5" tires. But had I kept the 250-six, I think 3.08 or 3.23 would have been a...

86 1/2 ton gears needed for 33” with new 383

    The gearset I away was for a G-body car with a 7.5" 10-bolt. But my 82 C10 also had 2.73, but 350 engines came standard with 2.56. Mine was a originally a 250-six.

Holley street warrior 600cfm for sbc 355?

Wow, that's good to hear. I assumed Holley carb manufacturing had gone overseas, like their Weiand intake manifolds did many years ago. I bought one that was the worst looking manifold I've ever seen. To Holley's credit, they sent me another one, and didn't even ask for a return. I hear that...

Headers or manifolds for 86k10 350 w/ Vortec heads?

I used the manifolds in the photos below on my 82 C10 with GM Vortec heads. They are sold as Dorman and other brand names. I had to raise the tops of the exhaust ports a little to match the raised ports on Vortec heads. You may also need to do this on other manifolds and headers, as well as...

86 1/2 ton gears needed for 33” with new 383

Back in the day I had an 81 C10 with a 305 and 2.56 gears, and thought that was tall! But many years later I gave a 2.73 gearset from a 7.5" 10-bolt to a guy who had a Pontiac with 2.21 (or 2.29?) gears. He said the 2.73s would be a high performance upgrade! :Big Laugh: *** Hey Grit dog -- I...

86 1/2 ton gears needed for 33” with new 383

Man, I can't imagine how sluggish the engine would be in .70 OD with a 2.73. And with the converter locked up -- forget about it! I would have guessed trucks with 700R4/4L60 transmissions would have had 3.42 as standard. Edit: I just now remembered renting a Chrysler product from Hertz (or...

86 1/2 ton gears needed for 33” with new 383

Have you confirmed the 2.73 gears? Seems strange to me for a K10 with a 700R4 (if that's what it came with), but GM was very worried about gas mileage back then. As for gear ratio selection, check out some on-line calculators to determine RPMs at various road speeds to see what you can live...

Alt Replacement Options? A bit confused.

The 10SI is alternator designed for 37-63 amp output. Regardless of the internals, the fan and frame cannot handle anything much higher than that, at least not for very long. Maybe you can stuff 140 lbs of garbage into a bag with 63 lb capacity, but it won't turn out well! I see guys doing...

Holley street warrior 600cfm for sbc 355?

I'm not a fan of electric chokes at all. I think the best-ever were the stock ones from the 60s, where they were controlled by intake manifold crossover heat. I'm really amazed that electric chokes don't burn out, because the canisters sure do get hot! I'd go with manual chokes, but all the...

Holley street warrior 600cfm for sbc 355?

The 80457 is a decent carb. I bought a refurbished one (which was essentially new) many years ago from Holley's eBay store. The engine was a 350 with Ramjet cam and Vortec heads, so essentially a Ramjet 350 with a carb. Manifold was a Holley Street Warrior. Anyway, I fired it up, set idle...

Edelbrock carbs on a 350 sm blk

Edelbrock carbs on a 350 sm blk

I have run, rebuilt, and bought & sold several Edelbrock 1404, 1405, and 1406 carbs over the years. But I never have bought a complete tuning kit, just a few pairs of metering rods, springs, and jets, along with pieces and parts from a couple rebuild kits. I have seen more than a few 14-...

    Thread sealant on header bolts?

Guess I'm in the minority, because all I do is run a thread chaser into the header bolt holes, add a drop of light oil to the bolt threads, and torque the bolts to 25-30 lb/ft, assuming I can get a socket on them. As for occasional re-tightening, that may be a good idea, but I've only done it...

3.08 Gears. What to Swap to?

Only you know what kind of engine speeds you can live with on the highway. Compare your current 3.08 with 31" tires, to a 3.73 and 4.11 with 33" tires. https://purperformance.com/p-29669-rpm-calculator.html

    Changing gear ratios: opinions/suggestions wanted!!

Flat tappet cam, yes. But it was installed when the engine was built 20 years ago, broken-in properly, and zero problems since. Most of those cam/lifter failures are right after start-up, or these days due to improperly ground cams and lifter faces. But yes, I don't spend a lot of time on...

    Changing gear ratios: opinions/suggestions wanted!!

Hey Chris, that's good to hear about the MSD controller. I have a 69 C10 with a 350/TH350, but even with 3.08 gears and 29" tires, I find myself looking for a taller gear at 70mph. A 4L60E might be reliable, but an 80 would be bulletproof. I dealt with several issues with an 85 700R4 in a...

    Changing gear ratios: opinions/suggestions wanted!!

FWIW, I think changing axle ratios is a lot simpler than a transmission swap. The 700R4/4L60 can be a PITA to set up properly, and reliability can be marginal, depending on the year of manufacture. And the electronic versions (60E/80E) are much more expensive, especially when you add...

    CARBURETOR DATED

About drain back: So you're saying there is a enough vacuum in the line to pull fuel up from the float bowl past the needle & seat? Wouldn't a vacuum in the line pull the needle even tighter up against the seat? On the other hand, I can see how heated fuel with 10% ethanol, just sitting in...

    CARBURETOR DATED

More than likely, intake manifold heat is causing the gas to evaporate. Try raising the float level above spec for starters. The owners manual tells you how to do it. Also try a phenolic spacer at least 1/2" thick. I'm having a similar problem with an old 1406, that otherwise works...

This one needs to go, asking for opinions. Offering it up here first.

If you could get the engine running, it would add significantly to the value. Otherwise, a potential buyer would have no idea if repairs would cost $200 or $2,000. And some would not even consider a truck with a blown head gasket.
