    Is this piece important?

I'll start by saying I've never purchased any of the control head parts, just taken them apart and fixed them. With that said, the broken clip in your original picture would come with new parts, as they are assembled and not meant to be serviced. If we are talking the little metal clips that...

    Is this piece important?

I showed the wrong part earlier, that was the electrical part of the control head. Here is the vacuum part. Same little fastener on both that can break. Sorry for the confusion. It's terrible getting old...

    Is this piece important?

The functional part of the control head is a very common item and may be available locally too. The vacuum ports are on the opposite side of the picture and I circled the cavity where the ends of the clip are that are prone to breaking (as yours did).

    Is this piece important?

I think it is actually the little tab that holds the HVAC control head together (w A/C only). You can take a comparable diameter push type door panel fastener to hold it together. It's a good time to add a little grease (vacuum or dielectric) to the control head to keep it from leaking and...

    Wiper Switch Wiring Challenge !!!

Ditto, plug and play. I put one from an '81 in my '78. Grabbed another recently I saw too as a spare.

Factory Cruise Control in a Non-Cruise Truck

I had to change the intermediate shaft when I swapped my '78 auto non-tilt for an '81 auto tilt. The coupler at the end of the column is different.

    Manual Torque Convertor Lock-up 700r4

It is a funky feeling to have one lock up in 2nd gear, '84 Caprice LG4, 2.73.

    Manual Torque Convertor Lock-up 700r4

A full manual mode scares me. If you forget or someone else drives the vehicle, the possiblity is there to overheat the torque converter/entire transmission when running for long periods of time in over drive with the converter unlocked.

Consumer Awareness when buying parts !!!

I encountered the same thing with a '96 Chevy 3.1 recently. I was so shocked by the seal price that I checked the timing cover gasket set price. Just kept the extra gaskets. It's more common than I realized.

    a/c in a non a/c truck

There have been decent looking aftermarket units, not sure about current availability. The holes punched in the firewall are considerably different between A/C and Non A/C making a full unit swap not a 'bolt on' prospect.

Smoke from the a/c heater controls

    Double post, sorry

Smoke from the a/c heater controls

Interesting topic. I agree that the blower would have a higher currect draw at times (A/C clutch is under 6 amps), IIRC, but high speed (fortunately) is not powered throught the control head (relay by the resistor pack). I think the contacts for the blower are better in the contol head as...

Smoke from the a/c heater controls

Very nice write up. I had a similar failure on my '84 Caprice (original owner, 245K miles). The design of the rotary switch (probably the same one for corresponding year C/Ks) allows the transfer of the copper contact material to transfer to the vent position when switching off the...

    Heater Control Issue

This is a control head for one of the aftermarket A/C systems, so it will be different than most of us have seen. The aftermarket part of the system is directing the air flow from the OEM heater assembly. Checking for a loss of vacuum would be a good start if it isn't a completely mechanical...
