    How about a vid? I'm to the point where i'm not asking for help diagnosing this but if anyone has an idea about the popping noise i'm all ears. To me, it sounds like a bad valve, possibly an exhaust valve. Stethoscope didn't narrow it down to a certain spot.

    Oh yeah. I shut it off and then decided to get a video of the popping, that's when it wouldn't start back up. I ran out of time to really look at it.

    Looks like i'll be pulling the timing gear cover. I verified top dead center on compression stroke and verified distributor #1 pointing at mark on the base and it hadn't moved. I have other timing issues.

    I got the fuel pump today and installed it. Yes the lower pressure worked and it actually ran and idled which is a first. But...it was popping out the carb and when I put a timing light on it the mark on the balancer was here (approximately).

    Neither have I but it seems like my current pump has some power! I've never even known someone having to use a regulator.

    Spectre performance 2519, it was only $24.10. I know it's a cheapy but I wanted to see if pressure actually is my problem. If so I planned on a quality regulator. Then I find out about lower pressure pumps which is what I would have done before the regulator.

    Of course. Sounds like I should see the pump by next Friday. Side note: The lower pressure did make the motor run at a normal idle finally but I didn't run it long due to the leak.

    I ordered a 5 psi fuel pump. It was around $23 from rockauto, regulator leaks and adds too much clutter to my motor anyways.

    For what it's worth I have not read all the other repeating threads and I've never had issues with Edelbrock, then again that was 25 years ago. I do have a Holley but it needs rebuilt. I got the regulator today and will try it out tomorrow. If fuel pressure is an issue I might get an Edelbrock...

    I got the tool in the mail today. Here's where everything is set. The 2 marks on the timing pointer are where the piston stopped using the tdc tool so that is good. I'm now at tdc on compression stroke and distributor is correct. Now i'm waiting for the fuel pressure regulator to show up. I...

    Well hot damn, just under 10 psi. Edelbrock recommends no more than 6.5 psi and they highly recommend 5.5 psi. Well, that was a first for me...crossing fingers.

    Mine is about the same. kick panels, floor panels, inner rockers, outer rockers. My cab corners are pretty good. Oh yeah, the floor supports are bad too

    No problem, I started with a factory quadrajet. from edelbrock they were 1 1/2 turns out. 2 turns out shouldn't keep it from running.

    That price of that regulator isn't bad. I found a fuel pressure tester for carburetor motors for $20. I'm picking that up tomorrow. When I think back, the quadrajet that was on there previously poured gas out onto the manifold, not sure from where but it got wet. I assumed it was a faulty...

    Carb is new from Summit, Edelbrock 1406 I don't feel comfortable looking in carb while cranking since the muffler incident. Can a mechanical fuel pump cause too much fuel pressure? That's one method I used. I ordered the top dead center tool to make sure the mark on harmonic balancer is correct...

    Yes, idle screw is backed way out. Ya know what else I failed to mention?....It will not start now but is getting spark and fuel. it's not even spit-n-spuddering at all, Just turning over.

    I got it running and it ran ok but I could not time it because the idle was too high. I checked for vacuum leaks etc but didn't find any. It sounded like it was popping out the carb and 1 time I hit the gas pedal and it dropped in rpms until I revved it up again, then the too high idle was back...
