Locating odd sized bolts

I believe it started with the covid thing. The one in Springfield OH recently told us that they will no longer sell us hardware in smaller quantities. It must be 50 or more.

I see, havent been in a long while...ours would never sell 1 or 2, you had to buy however they were packaged.

May wait till after covid, lol. But no they don't break packiging. Was normally cheaper for me to buy a pack of 50 than make a 100 mile round trip to get 5, plus always figure if I need 1 or 3 or 5 of whatever today I'll need them again at a later date. Of course I won't be able to find the 40 some odd I have and will go buy 50 more....lol

i always assume that if i have extra i will eventually need them and be unable to locate them anyway, so i will buy more then, too.

2 things, (coming from a nobody that makes his paycheck doing tool and die making ) because this thread has lasted on for like, weeks it seems lol.

1. A threads MAXIUMUM holding power is 2.5x the diameter, that means, if you've got a 3/8-16 bolt, and you've ran 2" worth of thread in, it's a waste of time, no ifs, ands, or buts

2. If you're in a jam, just cut it down, chamfer the 60° on the sander/grinder on the end, and run it down.

Sometimes, taking a knife and knocking the burr off the leading thread helps.

its a very tiny storefront and usually has 3 employees, 2 of which are on runs for companies and 1 who mans a desk. im thinking its like what was said earlier, bulk or package only

Meaning in order to get full tensile strength out of a bolt, the nut would have to be 2.5x as long as the bolt diameter?
Not sure I believe that, as most hex nuts, certainly those used in tension loads would be much longer.
I’m almost certain you can develop full tension in 1-1.25x the bolt diameter.

I’ve always heard minimum fastener engagement was equal to diameter. Couldn’t tell you maximum.

Personally, I think of the thickness of the nut for that sized bolt is enough, threading into steel. Threading into alum, cast, maluable iron etc.. softer material gets more thread engagement. That is just how I do it.

The depth of a nut looks pretty close to the diameter of the bolt.

If you do modify a bolt(especially one that threads into a different alloy, be sure to use a bolt dressing(never seize or even locktite). The coating on the threads will help keep it from galling.

Or just cut down the 4" bolt and grind a 45 degree angle around the diameter of the cut so it looks somewhat like the end of an uncut bolt.

BTW, unless this is a metric bolt, if the thread count 18 per inch then you have a 5/16"-18 bolt.
