Thanks guys for all the advice. I posted a thread about super sloppy steering several weeks ago. I recently had a Cummins Swap done on my 87 V20 Suburban. That included a complete rebuild of the front end. Every bushing balljoint tie rod end etc... was replaced on the entire vehicle...
Long winded reply, sorry. Springs and tires were definitely a part of it, but not bc they were separating or too weak. The separation is spacers. They were originally supposed to be HD springs rated at 1900 a piece. Front axle weight is 3400. So they were good. Actually too good. Turns out...
Ended up finding one on a 95 model at my local yard. Came in two days later. I went ahead and paid the 20 dollars to have their guy pull it for me. With pulling fee, 35 total. Lot cheaper than eBay. Putting it on today
A lot of people have mentioned the XJ steering shaft swap to get rid of the rag joint. Problem is, I can't find one in a salvage yard near me. they've either been snagged or damaged when wrecked. Is there an aftermarket one that anyone makes that gets rid of the rag joint that anyone would...
I was surprised too. But that was taken 30 seconds after I filled it up and it has a forty gallon tank. At roughly 7 pounds per gallon. That’s 280 pounds extra back there. Even empty, that’s closer than I expected.
Some had asked for specifics on the weight and the ratings. Had it weighed today. First the front axle is rated for 5500 pounds. The front leaf springs for 2600 a piece.
Total weight: 6620 lbs
Front axle weight: 3380 lbs
Rear axle weight: 3240 lbs
Funny you mention them. I talked to Steve on Tuesday. Once I get the play issue resolved, I’m gonna put their crossover steer system on it. This summer I’m gonna switch out to their suspension as well. Haven’t made up my mind if I’m gonna just do the straight replace with their custom leafs...
They can actually weigh it at the truck stop near my house and give me individual axle weights as well. Or even at the parish (county) dump. So will be getting weighed on Friday.
It is a tilt column.
And now for a little rant.
It was in storage not running for well over a decade before I got it. So every bushing in it and seal was dry rotted. So every single one was replaced with polyurethane bushings, every bearing, every joint, etc... (except door seals and...
I’m pretty sure it was intact when the new steering box was put on. I’ve only been driving it a month, but anything is possible. Louisiana roads are not gentle. When I have the shaft change done, I’ll have it checked for sure.
