You are right, 87 octane should be fine for the 350 from that vintage and in reading the owners manual from that vintage, claims are made that light knocking is acceptable. In my case however. my Beauville van has 2.56 gears which causes knock and ping to more prevalent when climbing longer...- JGN62

I initially ran 87 octane, but after listening to the knock and ping on a highway trip, I quickly pulled into a service station and mixed the tank with 91.
