TH350 Do some not need a kickdown cable ?

Pardon my ignorance of transmissions, but this may be a quirk.
My 84 K-10 with TH350 doesn't have a kickdown cable for passing gear but when I mash the throttle pedal, it kicks down like it does have one.
My 83 C-20 also has a TH350 but will not kick into passing gear no matter what without the cable.
Were there different models of the trans, or is the one in my 84 a quirk ?

Odd you say that, I noticed my old 84 k5 didn't have a kick down years ago.
It was a th350/205 truck.

Never gave it a thought, and even recall learning something about that. But I can't remember now.

Something with the governor??

Someone more knowledgeable will chime in. I wanna Know.

Weird things (and I do mean really weird) happen here a LOT, most without explanation, so I really shouldn't be surprised a bit, but it DOES seem odd to me.
I would think all TH350's were created equal.

Came back to me.

It's got a vaccuum modulator on it.
There should be a vaccuum line running maybe towards the rear or side of the trans? No?

That's a maybe. I might be f'n this all up

It's either governor related, as in, the increased rpms increases hydraulic pressure when you go to WOT or its a vacuum modulator.
Im sure of one of those 2. But I cannot recall my findings.

Both of them have the vacuum actuated modulator, and a governor behind the dish shaped plate.
The one in the 84 doesn't have a place for a kickdown cable, and there are no extra linkages like are found on the 400 like a friend has in his truck.

Ok then I'm stumped too lol.

You say the other refuses to downshift without a kick down, unless of course the governor springs in it are shot.

Both trannys upshift normal, and as speed is decreased, they both downshift normal.
It's just the passing gear/forced downshift part that's different.
The 84 has an Edelbrock 1405 carb with no provision for the kickdown cable, so that's just as well ......
The 83 has a quadrajet with bracket for the cable on the intake, but I am planning on installing a 1405 on it very soon, but don't want to spend the money or deal with the hassle of the special bracket for the cable to work with the 1405.

I may have this "special bracket" if you need it.

It's made to work with a eldebrock I do believe, it's for a th350.

I'll have to check. Write that down and don't let Me forget when that time arrives for you.

Correction, I remember now, its some sort of crap for a holley demon carb.

If you're going slow enough, just the governor will allow downshift. That 83 C20 should be a Th400 which doesn't have a cable and has a full throttle downshift electric switch at the top of the gas pedal and will downshift via governor if not full throttle and going slow enough with the help of the signal from the vac modulator.

That time is coming VERY SOON ......
The Q-jet has started acting up lately, and I really am tired of the hassle of taking it apart and fighting it for reassembly.
I suspect the Q-jet has reached that time where they just say they are tired and want to retire.
I have a 1405 all rebuilt and ready to go as soon as the ambition hits to make the switch and also mount a manual choke cable under the dash.

The switch seems to be long gone, probably a previous owner did that when they changed the trans.
So far, I am happy with the 350 as long as it keeps going as good as it has up till now.

I THINK this is the linkage on the 1405 Edelbrock where the kickdown cable will connect ?
I see two pieces on Jeg's site, a cable bracket that MIGHT be the one for the 1405 (I did see one for the Holley) and they show a lever that is supposed to bolt to the carburetor.
This 1405 install on the 83 might get complicated.

I have the bracket to hold the cable.

Just unsure if it'll work for you or not.
