I think I was told years ago that these direct air in such a way that helps cool engine. I can't remember who said or the specifics of the conversation. So is this correct? My truck doesn't have one. with an Al. summer on the way I thought I should check into it.

Are you asking about the one that goes under the front bumper? Like a chin spoiler?

I think those were more for directing airflow away from the undercarriage to help with fuel economy. As far as I know, they were never used on the 3/4 tons which generally get worked harder and would benefit more from any additional cooling the air dams provide.

The oem cooling system is more than capable of cooling your engine provided it's in good condition. The engineers that designed it took into account that some of the trucks would end up in hot climates so if the radiator, water pump, fan clutch, and coolant mix is all up to date you have nothing to worry about.

Do you have AC? Check between the radiator and condenser for debris. I had a bunch of leaves and fuzz stuck in there I shop vac'd out. And there are seals on the sides too that can fall out and cause engine compartment air to get sucked through the radiator.
