Nobody warned me about the MPGs on these square bodies!

I forgot just how much of a thirsty b!tch my 89 burb is until ive started driving it again more frequently the past couple of weeks lol
I went from 30$ lasting me a week or two in my well tuned trailblazer to 50$ seemingly lasting a week in the suburban
Thats with 4.10s, 31's and a 700r4 with a mild cam ho350 tbi

yup. I keep my TBI above 1/4 tank unless its some sort of emergency situation. and modern EFI vehicles should be the done same way
I fill up my tank when it gets to between 1/2 to 3/4's full because filling a 40 gallon tank that's near empty is psychologically painful...

You maybe right I'm don't remember the year but he's running Sniper TBI. I'm assuming he's running an intank pump in an early tank, but no matter what, intank or inline he's going to kill that pump in very short order starving it for fuel.

Mine has the Holley Sniper TBI and it's got an in-tank pump in one of the tanks (the main tank). The pumps are being replaced with the Holley 12-308 pumps which have the Hydramat (supposedly that helps).

This will never happen again after I fix my fuel gauge which I'm doing this coming week. The Dakota Digital VHX cluster I bought should be a big upgrade over the stock gauge cluster.

Why not just use factory TBI tanks which were specifically designed for this use?

I'd thought about that but this saves me money since I get to keep my existing tanks and the Hydramat is supposed to solve the fuel starvation problem. Some people say it doesn't work, but based off of the reviews I've been reading it seems that 95% of people say that it does work.

The only advantage the TBI tanks would have would be the internal baffles, right?

Yes but I think staying holley will cost a bunch more and doubtful as good of end results. Could only insert 5 pics but you can get just an ep 381 genuine GM for less than 50.00, your hydramat costs more than a gas tank.

Even with your setup you should be able to hit double digits, unless if you really are in the skinny pedal all the time.
Double digits like 7.2mpg vs 7? Lol
Hell my milquetoast 180hp 350 c10 running very light wheels and 3.07s barely gets double digits. It’s around 12 avg I think. Might be better but if it is it’s only getting 13 maybe.
The K20 likes lucky #7. As in 7mpg.
Idk how you’d ever get over 10 squarebody mpg on a hopped up big block in a jacked up truck rolling huge mud tires.
Now running out of gas, especially more than once, in a pickup truck you know sucks gas like it’s free, with only half a fuel system and a bad gauge, living in a state where it could take a whole tank to get to the next town is just silly. That’s basically asking to run out of gas unless you’ve marked miles and gallons already. And know you’re odometer will keep working.

Towed home like buddy with a rope or tow truck? Why wouldn’t you just put gas in it and drive it vs towing?

Today marks the second time my square body has run out of gas on me.

In fairness, it's my own fault. When I bought the truck the dual fuel tanks didn't work (only the main tank worked) and the fuel gauge was in no way whatsoever accurate. My next project is fixing the tanks (as anyone knows who has been following my threads on this forum). Still, I figured I've got 16 gallons in the main tank and that should be enough to get me to and from since I don't do much driving.

Oh boy was I wrong! Today my square body ran out of gas on me for the second time and left me stranded on the side of the road. I was shaking my head thinking I just filled the main tank a few weeks ago and I'll be damned if I've driven more than 50 miles (if that), unless I am forgetting something.

I had the thing towed home, put more gas in it, and it fired right up.

I know, stupid me. The fuel gauge doesn't work so how could I ever really know for sure? Still, my main driver which is a 2019 F150 3.5 Ecoboost gets much better (though not great) MPG. I figured that the K10 would get much worse MPG than the F150, but I had no idea it would be this much worse!

I suppose it doesn't help that I've got a 500HP Blueprint Engines 396 stroker in there with a Holley Sniper EFI setup. No idea what sort of MPG it's getting but after today I'm convinced I'm getting 8 MPG at best.

Anyways, I didn't buy this thing for the MPG (obviously) but I had no idea this thing would suck gas the way it does! Talk about a wakeup call :hahano:

The cold weather and snow is about to set in here in rural Wyoming so it's time to get started on the fuel tank project!
wow!
lots of fun on the go pedal but wow!
:)

my plain jane K20 Ultra HD gets about 15
even that makes my wallet cringe compared to my daily.

Yes

I wasn't entirely sure if it was the gas or not since the fuel gauge didn't work.

Not sure how to say this but I’m not sure how an old K20 could get that kind of mpg unless going downhill with a tailwind.
