I’m restoring the high headrest bucket seats in my ’83 K5. I ordered new black vinyl upholstery and seat foam from LMC. The upholstery seems correct but the seat foam does not fit the frame and has more angled sides of the headrest than the original buckets. I called LMC and confirmed that I ordered the correct foam and they don’t understand why I’m having this issue. I have called multiple other online stores and no one else carries the seat foam and can only find upholstery. Any ideas???

It's because the seats from your truck appear to be aftermarket. Unless maybe it's just the angle of the picture.

I used to have this crusty seat frame from with good back foam on it, from an '83. I don't recall the back being shaped like yours... but I could be wrong. All I have is this zoomed in picture of it, with other stuff on it. My buddies talked me into tossing it when I moved.

I have ordered hi density foam with truck upholstery before and found most of the online stuff to be "less dense". I have done better locally. With seats that had damaged foam, I have learned to cut out and replace the bad stuff and/or make templates. Lots of video online from upholstery guys using little more than a knife and some glue.

So, after much frustration, research, your replies and from talking to an upholstery professional, it is true that the seat frame that came out of my Blazer is not original to my ‘83 Blazer and is likely from a ‘70’s Blazer and cannot be re-foamed because the foam was originally sprayed on or permanently glued on encasing the frame. You cannot buy a foam kit that will install over these frames. I believe this is also true for Blazers up to around 1985 because in ‘86 the seats changed design and is why I cannot find a foam kit for my ‘83 but can only buy the upholstery to install over original foam only if it is still in good shape. In stripping the foam off of my frame with a massive effort, I have effectively rendered my seats useless. My only options are to buy used ‘86 and up Blazer seats that will bolt on without modification and can buy upholstery and foam kits for, buy other used non Blazer seats and modify the base to fit or purchase new aftermarket seats, which I did and bought the Corbeau Sport seats and slides (sold separately) from Summit, specifically for Blazers but losing the tilt up from the floor latch feature (it still slides forward enough to get into the back). These Corbeau Sport seats also better match my 3rd row Tahoe/Escalade seats I’m installing. So, again, beware that LMC sells the foam kits and upholstery labelled as being for an ‘83 Blazer. Although, in fact, the upholstery is correct for my ‘83, the foam is NOT correct and is instead for the “newer” style seats that were original to ‘86-‘89 Blazers. This has been a very painful and frustration lesson to learn.
