I had all the rust I can deal with, if you only know what I went throught his afternoon patching up my POS, I am dying right now from that ****. :sad72:

I know all about it, I'm a bodyman  I had started fitting panels on my '88 when kid #5 came along, and I haven't gotten back to it yet. The back of that thing is rusty enough now that even the hitch is getting thin.

Awesome, I can't think of any secrets that I might know about it. I'm sure you're aware its a 40 gallon gas tank. Pretty much standard for the 454, 3/4 ton Burb. Have fun filling that bish up when its on E.

It's funny you mention that too. Both Burbs have the 40 gallon tank but very rarely do they need more than 30 gallons. When the gauge gets down to 1/8, there's still about 10 gallons in there.

My box van is the same way. Its got a 40 gallon tank, but past E it takes 32 gallons and that is filling the pipe too that is long enough, probably another gallon and maybe half. So one day my daughter drives it, and KNOWS it goes forever on E. A week later I drive it 5 miles, KNOWING, I have 8 gallson so I can go 65-80 miles no problem, runs the friggin thing outta gas. Talk about pist. A damn 6500lb box van sitting in the middle of road out of gas. Ya think I could push it to the side??? NOT !!! You know how much impound would have been on that thing? I ran like hell for a 1/2 mile, found a milk jug, and got a gallon of gas without the attendant seeing what I put it in until I ran off back to the truck, but then nothing they could do about it. No funnel, I thing I got half of it in the tank and got it off the road. Yep, she heard it alright !!!

The Burbs first long trip turned out great :) Took it up to northeast Ohio to buy a car trailer, about 310 miles round trip. We got a little over 9 mpg, but that was 70-75 mph most of the way, loaded down with the entire family and a bunch of tools. The second leg of the trip was into a fairly strong headwind, and of course pulling the trailer that I'm guessing is around 2000 lbs. 11mpg should be possible on level ground, no trailer, and keeping it under 70mph.

Yep, I'd say your on target for a Burb with 3.73's. My Pick Up empty, cruise set at 65, I got 13.3. Not much wind to speak of on that trip, and that was round trip to my dads of 154 miles. Pick Up being lighter and mine has wussy wagon 3.21 gears in the rear so that may have helped. Its sucks around town though. 8-9mpg is about it. Pulling my trailer empty really hurts the mpg. I think if I had 3.73 or 4.10 gears, I'd actually do better on mpg towing the trailer.

IMO, the 3.73 rear with the tall tires is perfect. Good pulling power and it just effortlessly cruises down the road at 70-75 mph, even on a slight incline. Climb a steep grade, just give it gas and it goes right up with no down shifting or screaming rpm's. I love it.

I agree. 3.73 is just about as perfect all around good gear ratio as you can get with a non OD trans. My Burb has 3.73, my 85K1500 has 3.73's in both axles and I'm sure happy about it. The other 4x4, 85K10, I think I am going with a 4.10 or 4.56 though. I think I'll tend to be rougher on that one and intend to give it hell.
The 3/4 pick up with the 3.21 struggled a bit towing that Burb on the 18ft tandem trailer. I can only think its due to the wussy wagon 3.21 gears cuz a 454 shouldn't have been stuggling at all pulling an extra guesstimated 5000 lbs. The Burb didn't have a motor or trans in it. It towed it, but I could tell when I hit the gas, the gitty up wasn't there like I think it woulda been with a lower gear.

I will add though, the good side of the 3.21 gear, you nail it from a 30mph roll, its gone !!! If I hold it to the floor getting on the frwy, Its like 65 before it hits second and who knows 3rd cuz the speedo is way gone buried. Probably 95-100 or so.

I'm really curious what my trailer weighs, I need to find out. It's only a 16 footer but it's a wood deck and seems like it's built plenty stout.

If I was guessing, 1100lbs if its stout built. 950-1000lbs if its medium duty. What are those sides made of? Cuz that will add more.

Hmm, I was guessing more. It felt pretty heavy trying to move/wiggle it around (it wouldn't, lol), I figured it would weigh as much as a small honda. The sides are just made of wood planks.

Doing a little math when I had to move my SIL and Daugher for a Military DItY move, we had to weigh the vehicles and if I remember, I figured my 18ft tandem axle empty at 1150-1200lbs. I could have been off since it was combo empty weight of the Box Van but I knew what the Box Van weighed empty and subtracted it from the total.

Once up on the lift, I realized it has factory duals with no cats. It's great because that's a couple less pieces of smog equipment to get rid of.

You know, I've looked at this single post FOUR times since joining up here, and I still sport a stiffy when I see it. If I havn't said so already, that is a very, very, very nice looking rig.

And I'm sorry I said it belonged to 89Suburban in another thread. :)

I am so jealous....
